I gave Leo's another try Thursday evening. I was impressed at the difference from my last visit. Every employee greeted me with "Welcome to Leo's". The food was very good. Had the fish, chicken tenders and hush puppies. All were cooked perfect. If this continues then I will continue to eat there.

When you plan on opening up a business you don't just walk in blindly with no idea of your operating costs so why should the cost of WAPA come as a surprise and be cause for closing the doors? When you plan on opening up a business you don't just walk in blindly with no idea of your operating costs so why should the cost of WAPA come as a surprise and be cause for closing the doors? Because a great many people in the States are stupid and don't do research and assume that all Caribbean towns/islands look and operate like a Disney-themed all-inclusive resort.

Apart from the obvious drawbacks related to whether or not island life would generally suit you, one of the largest attrition rates here is amongst those of retirement age, both longtime residents and locals who've lived the majority of their lives here. One reason is the high cost of living and the fact that retirement income goes much further in most stateside communities; the other is health care or lack of it. Literally dozens of my friends have left over the years for the latter reason. I've also known several couples who bought vacation property here and kept it up for years with the expectation that this would be their retirement home. As age and health issues advanced, they sadly opted to sell here and make their retirement homes in stateside areas where more health care opportunities abounded close by.

As the previous poster said, a lot of thought, planning and preparation has to go into such a decision and you absolutely should visit as much as possible. Good luck!

Exactly my thoughts, I plan to fill out my substitute application for the upcoming school year. My major is in physical education (k-12). I have been in contact with St. Croix School District human resources and their are no current vacancies in that field.

I have a friend who is the head of a department (several departments, I think) at a public STX high school, decades of teaching experience at that school, and a master's degree. This person makes $25K a year. Just FYI.
