Safe, Affordable Housing On STT? (2 replies)

Hi all!

Newbie here ;)

I'm gearing up to visit STT for an extended stay in July (about 6mths) to secure permanent employment before relocating from California. Would really appreciate any suggestions on safe, affordable housing on the island.

Have been scouting out potential employers but want to come over before making contact since I can't interview in person yet.

What's a good, clean, reasonable studio going for in an area safe for a single woman with a budget of approx. 800 a month? Should I consider renting a room?

Other than craigslist, are there any other websites I should be checking on for housing/employment on STT?

She is small, brown/tan, very friendly, will more than likely roll over on her back when approaced...she loves people. I think she is too friendly to be lost, perhaps someone took her in. Unfortunately, she did not have her collar on. She is microchipped. Lost in the area of Lorraine Road and Robin Lane. She has a bit of a bad hip so I dont think she would walk far or up hill. She was spotted down the hill several times last week. If you see her, please take her in and call me immediately at 690-8100. My name is Michael. Or if you know of anyone who may have taken in a dog recently, it might be Chica. Thanks for your help.

Us vs. Them (27 replies)

Note: I have not attributed these quotes to the person who said them, allowing them anonymity, because that is the only reason I can figure that my original post (see below) and inquiry were DELETED from this "open" forum. I admit, there is a bit of sarcasm in my initial statement. However, in my opinion, the type of statements below are truly alienating to those of us newly relocated or considering relocation. Where do these numbers come from? Are there entry/exit polls done of those coming and going to the USVI? Do any of you really feel you have an adequate sampling of the thousands each year, coming and going, to make such sweeping statements? These assertions have an impact on many people and it is quite irresponsible to throw out such judgmental, and frankly, polarizing generalizations on such a regular basis.

In the very last quoted statement below, the OP talks about how much better off "we" would be without all these dysfunctional transplants and then goes on to eschew the "us vs. them" mentality such transplants bring. The irony was too much for me and I had to post.

This is a serious topic and I do not want to see it deleted again.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

It looks like [ anonymous forum regular ] has done some serious social research.
Do others who have lived here for a while agree with this assessment?
Are there some actual studies out there that document why people come here, at what age, how long they stay, and why they leave?

Quote

IMO, the Vi "self selects" for transplants with big-time baggage (substance issues, emotional instability, occupational challenges like poor education and inability to hold a job, relationship problems). I think about half the folks (50%) who move here do so because they are running away from Issues which they cause themselves. ....... Additionally, about half the transplants arrive with minimal amount of resources (no job, no career training, no money in the bank, no prospects).

Quote

The Vi also attracts a certain segment (10%) of adventurous folks who decide that time is right to "follow a dream" or" try something different". Normally these people are in stage of transition in their career and/or personal lives. (i.e. recent retirees, 20 somethings exploring life choices). These people view the Vi as pit-stop in the overall life journey. Most young retirees or "kids" I meet are planning to stay for 1-10 years.

Quote

Some people make a more calculated move and factor things like life-style and career variables. (5%)

Quote

A large portion transplants (35%) come to the Vi from outside the US for economic opportunity. This segment has the most persistent longevity. Many will do what ever it takes to carve out a life for themselves in the USA. And if/when they fail, no other country provides immigrants with a social benefit safety ntet like the USA, (food stamps, subsidized housing, education, health care, black market employment etc.).

Quote

IMO, the island would better off with out all the left over "transplants with baggage" and "benefit sucker". THese are the people who keep us from moving forward by fueling the us .v them menatility, rather then bringing creative resourses and talent into the mix. Welcome.

I left this final quote in, [ anonymous forum regular ], because it reflects a quite defined us vs. them mentality... I have seen you make this particular rant repeatedly and just have to say it is one of the most UNWELCOMING things I have seen on this forum.

USVI Moving Center - Cost of Living (11 replies)

Good day (and Happy Mom's Day to all mothers on the forum)!

I'm trying to do some cost of living (COL) research for St. Croix. The section of this website entitled "USVI Moving Center - Cost of Living" for St. Croix was last updated a few years ago. Our visit was during Christmas-time so it was hard to gauge these costs based on that visit. I did a "search" here, but didn't see much current data.

Would anyone be able/willing to skim the "USVI Moving Center - Cost of Living" page and offer a percentage of change for remarkable areas? I'd like to have a better Cost of Living Adjustment (utilities, gas, food). My best hunch is that prices have jumped since 2008-10. Naturally, I'm not asking for an exact calculation or update for each category listed ...

So, for example, I wonder if would it be reasonable to say the current cost of electricity has increased by xx% when compared to the stats for STX on "USVI Moving Center - Cost of Living" page. Or, is the cost for electricity (or key provisions, food, water for replenishing a cistern, gasoline, etc.) is pretty much the same as the expense listed.

Finally, does the COL for a household budget vary over the course of the year? For example, in generally would one expect to have an increase in a home budget of xx% when comparing general expenses between winter & summer months ... Or is it pretty consistent? Here in DC it's pretty much the same (expensive!) because we generally must switch from heat to AC within a window of weeks each Fall / Spring. There might be a few days or weeks when we can live without any type of climate control. When I lived in Michigan, my household expenses were generally lower in summer months and MUCH higher when paying for heat.

I sure hope these inquiries make sense and is an appropriate post for the forum. :-)

Kindly,
John

Electrcian Recommendation on STX (3 replies)

I am looking for recommendations for an electrician to do some work on a house, such as relocating and splitting out an electrical panel and running new cable from the meter to the panel. I am familar with Owen Johnson and Meinrad Jagrup, who do fine work, and I have a phone book too, but am looking for personal recommendations for other electricians who might be a bit less expensive. Any ideas?
