More good news on the MJ front (no replies)

PHYSICIANS CHANGE TUNE ON MARIJUANA

The AMA Wants More Research on Cannabis Medicines and a Lesser Drug
Classification.

The American Medical Assn. on Tuesday urged the federal government to
reconsider its classification of marijuana as a dangerous drug with no
accepted medical use, a significant shift that puts the prestigious
group behind calls for more research.

The nation's largest physicians organization, with about 250,000
member doctors, the AMA has maintained since 1997 that marijuana
should remain a Schedule I controlled substance, the most restrictive
category, which also includes heroin and LSD.

In changing its policy, the group said its goal was to clear the way
to conduct clinical research, develop cannabis-based medicines and
devise alternative ways to deliver the drug.

"Despite more than 30 years of clinical research, only a small number
of randomized, controlled trials have been conducted on smoked
cannabis," said Dr. Edward Langston, an AMA board member, noting that
the limited number of studies was "insufficient to satisfy the current
standards for a prescription drug product."

The decision by the organization's delegates at a meeting in Houston
marks another step in the evolving view of marijuana, which an AMA
report notes was once linked by the federal government to homicidal
mania. Since California voters approved the use of medical marijuana
in 1996, marijuana has moved steadily into the cultural mainstream
spurred by the growing awareness that it can have beneficial effects
for some chronically ill people.

This year, the Obama administration sped up that drift when it ordered
federal narcotics agents not to arrest medical marijuana users and
providers who follow state laws. Polls show broadening support for
marijuana legalization.

Thirteen states allow the use of medical marijuana, and about a dozen
more have considered it this year.

The AMA, however, also adopted as part of its new policy a sentence
that admonishes: "This should not be viewed as an endorsement of state-
based medical cannabis programs, the legalization of marijuana, or
that scientific evidence on the therapeutic use of cannabis meets the
current standards for a prescription drug product."

The association also rejected a proposal to issue a more forceful call
for marijuana to be rescheduled.

Nevertheless, marijuana advocates welcomed the development. "They're
clearly taking an open-minded stance and acknowledging that the
evidence warrants a review. That is very big," said Bruce Mirken, a
spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project. "It's not surprising that
they are moving cautiously and one step at a time, but this is still a
very significant change."

Advocates also noted that the AMA rejected an amendment that they said
would have undercut the medical marijuana movement. The measure would
have made it AMA's policy that "smoking is an inherently unsafe
delivery method for any therapeutic agent, and therefore smoked
marijuana should not be recommended for medical use."

Dr. Michael M. Miller, a psychiatrist who practices addiction
medicine, proposed the amendment. "Smoking is a bad delivery system
because you're combusting something and inhaling it," he said.

Reaction from the federal government was muted.

Dawn Dearden with the Drug Enforcement Administration said: "At this
point, it's still a Schedule I drug, and we're going to treat it as
such." The Food and Drug Administration declined to comment.

In a statement, the office of the White House drug czar reiterated the
administration's opposition to legalization and said that it would
defer to "the FDA's judgment that the raw marijuana plant cannot meet
the standards for identity, strength, quality, purity, packaging and
labeling required of medicine."

The DEA classifies drugs into five schedules, with the fifth being the
least-restrictive. Schedule II drugs, such as cocaine and morphine,
are considered to have a high potential for abuse, but also to have
accepted medical uses.

Several petitions have been filed to reschedule marijuana. The first,
filed in 1972, bounced back and forth between the DEA and the courts
until it died in 1994. A petition filed in 2002 is under
consideration.

Kris Hermes, a spokesman for Americans for Safe Access, said that
advocates hoped the petition would receive more attention. "Given the
change of heart by the AMA, there is every opportunity for the Obama
administration to do just that," he said.

In a report released with its new policy, the AMA notes that the
organization was "virtually alone" in opposing the first federal
restrictions on marijuana, which were adopted in 1937. Cannabis had
been used in various medicinal products for years, but fell into
disuse in the early 20th century.

Sunil Aggarwal, a medical student at the University of Washington,
helped spark the AMA's reconsideration after he researched marijuana's
effect on 186 chronically ill patients. "I had reason to believe that
there was medical good that could come from these products, and I
wanted to see AMA policy reflect that," he said.

The AMA is not the only major doctors organization to rethink
marijuana. Last year, the American College of Physicians, the second-
largest physician group, called for "rigorous scientific evaluation of
the potential therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana" and an
"evidence-based review of marijuana's status as a Schedule I
controlled substance."

Feedback from community needed.... (6 replies)

Hello there. I am the executive director of a not for profit that, among other things, serves people who are homeless in a shelter designed for rehabilitation. I have recently put together a concept and sent it to other agencies, senators, the congressional delegate, etc. I would GREATLY appreciate your feedback and ideas as well.

As 'panhandling' behavior does not work for the community or the person, I would like to use our organization to start a 'voucher' system, starting with 25 cent vouchers. Instead of giving someone in need change, giving a voucher would enable them to go to various food service businesses and to purchase food and non-alcoholic beverages only.

As we have a rising drug abuse problem on the island (St. Croix, but would like to extend to STT and STJ next year), giving cash does not often help the people, although the intent is good. This would circumvent this problem and allow people to be less afraid of giving to the people who are homeless as it would be for the purpose of nutrition.

Vouchers would be made conveniently available for purchase at face value (25 cents, 50 cents, etc.) or in booklets. I started another program like this in a challenging inner city environment in the late 1980's, and it worked beautifully. It still continues to date.

This, finally, also teaches 'consumerism' as the people who are given vouchers actually have a choice in foods. Among people who are homeless, many have diabetes, are aware of it, and have information on how to eat and what to eat. It would also help as although the soup kitchens do some wonderful work, they are only open for one meal per day. This leaves many people hungry, if they make it on time, or starving if they don't. This leads to petty theft and other undesirable behavior. These vouchers would be able to be used during most daytime hours, and therefore allow people to gain strength, clarity of mind, not having behavior driven by hunger, and for those who participate or engage in someway in employment (we offer drop in employment services at our center, Ten Thousand Helpers at 301 Hospital Street, F'sted), greater sustenance to be able to work enough to get back on their feet and eventually into some form of housing.

I do not have all of the answers. I know that. As such, I am hoping you can provide me with feedback to assist in the development of this, or perhaps even a better program.

If you can take a few minutes, I would truly appreciate hearing from you,

Sincerely,

Dan G.

They decided to meet monthly to review and discuss their work. What emerged from those Saturday afternoon meetings is the book, All This Is Love: A Collection of Virgin Islands Poetry, Art & Prose, acclaimed as an abundant repository of elegant metaphors of love and life deftly written, precisely executed, and universal in its scope.

The five authors - Elaine Warren Jacobs, Daisy Holder Lafond, Hilda Lewis Joyce, Jeanne O'Day and Tregenza A. Guests, employees, the diving community and local residents are being called upon to assist with the cleanup.

Patagon Dive Center has scheduled this even in conjunction with the Project AWARE Foundation, which coordinates underwater clean up events and urges divers and volunteers to jump in their wetsuits, pull on their gloves and make a splash for trash!

“Project AWARE is pleased to support Patagon Dive Center. Divers are the guardians of our underwater environments – they often see first hand the effects of marine debris on our delicate ecosystem. This event is the largest single day volunteer event on behalf of our underwater environment. It’s a fantastic example of how people can work together to take action.” said Jenny Miller Garmendia, Director of Project AWARE Foundation.

The clean up of the beach, shoreline and underwater areas at Great Bay will start on Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m. Volunteers should meet at Patagon Dive Center. Divers and snorkelers who are interested in participating can stop by Patagon Dive Center located at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas or call (340) 775-3333, ext. 8162.

All divers need to confirm participation before the day and will be required to bring their diver certification card, dive equipment and sign an Underwater Liability Release Form. The diving equipment will be provided for all certified divers that wish to contribute to INTERNATIONAL CLEANUP DAY. For non-divers, bags and instructions will be provided.

All divers and non-divers will participate in a competition for the biggest, smallest and most unusual item found on the clean up day. The prizes will be provided by Patagon Dive Center and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas.

About Project AWARE Foundation
Project AWARE Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. I've done lots of research about the pros and cons of island life. The one thing I couldn't find sufficient information on was the dating/single's scene for thirty-somethings. The information I was able to find stated that 64.4-percent of VI inhabitants were between the ages of 15-64, which was not helpful.

Can any of you shed light on the dating scene for women in that age group?

Thanks!

LL

50's and 60's Rock and Roll Dance Party - benefits the Animal Shelter! (2 replies)

Mark your calendars for Sept 12th. We are going to have some fun at the Palms with a 50's and 60's Rock and Roll Dance Party. It all starts at 6:00 pm when the 'Diner' opens for dinner with a period inspired menu of burgers , shakes and fountain favorites. There will raffles, prizes, hula hoop and limbo contests. We are planning some 'dance demos/lessons' for the Stroll... The Bop... and the Mashed Potato! Those feeling so inclined can slip on their poodle skirts, roll up their blue jeans, slick back their hair and come in costume... others can choose to just come enjoy the fun. DJ Erik will be rocking the tunes from 7 to 11 and this event will be fun for all ages!

It is all to benefit the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center! All the entry fee money ($25.00 per person) goes directly to the shelter to support the daily feeding, grooming and loving of the more than 100 homeless animals that are there waiting for their big chance of a loving home.

Posters going up this weekend - more announcements coming out soon. Start Planning! You are going to love it!

The shelter appreciates our support!

<div id="div_5bba703847bf00620da6c1146db45983"
