Does anyone know if T-Mobile provides coverage on St Thomas? We are moving there in September and T-Mobile is our current provider. We would like to continue with what we have if we can. Thanks for any help:-)

That's a negative. You will have service, but it will be international roaming with incredibly high rates. AT&T and Sprint are the only national cell phone providers in the USVI.

Slight correction from what VICaptain mentioned. If you maintain your states-side TMobile account, you can call from STT back to the USA and it is a deduct from your allotted minutes plan. If you call an STT number when in STT or in the USA it costs 60 cents per minute. I have T-Mobile. They utilize the Cingular towers in STT.

That is 100 percent false. I have T-Mobile here, I get excellent coverage and there is NO ROAMING at all. They are on STT and STJ and I tend to even get a better signal then my friends that have AT&T in some places :)

I also call local (340) numbers daily and it does not cost any more at all. It deducts from my minutes the same regardless if I call Texas or a friend in Frenchmans.

I am using T-Mobile network, I am never on the Cingular network. If you are latching on to another network, you may want to call there tech support. I have mine locked to T-Mobile and most places I will get 3 or 4 bars here on STT. They do have plenty of towers :)

I pay my 90 dollars a month for unlimited internet, text messages and minutes and it stays 90 dollars a month here as well. Most people I know did not even know that they were down here and some even told me that it would be roaming, but that is not the case at all. You can call T-Mobile and have them transfer you to the Puerto Rico T-Mobile and they will tell you the same thing. Even the wireless broadband from T-Mobile here is pretty solid

Oh, and on another note, I never did change my address or number with them, my bills go to my Mothers house in Florida, so you do not have to change your address or number either, it just works :)

Cody:

I even called T-Mobile yesterday and spent over an hour trying to figure out coverage (or lack there of) on St Thomas. By the end of the conversation I was told that they do not have coverage in the USVI, that I could call the states and use my minutes but calling locally in St Thomas would be considered roaming charges because they bounce signal off of Cingular towers. I was told I would need to find another provider once I was down there. This is frustrating! I would rather keep my plan instead of breaking contract, but every answer from their customer service reps tell me I have no choice. AAARRGH!:-X

Cody: That is interesting and not at all what I hear from others with Verizon. Also, do you have any trouble getting people to return calls with your non-340 number?

Oh the CSR's are a pain in the tail for sure. It took me a while to even see if I could use the mobile broadband, but I had to talk to T-Mobile in Puerto Rico. Maybe Marty From STT will chime in, he knows my phone works good here as well as any AT&T phone :)

Anyway, here is the deal. I am never on a CIngular/AT&T tower, always on a T-Mobile tower. They (T-Mobile) bought out Suncom, which had towers here, and they are all switched over. Read here under Caribbean Operations [en.wikipedia.org]

Trust me, you can keep your T-Mobile phone here with no worries. I had the same worries and everyone also told me that it does not work here. Sadly, there are no T-Mobile stores here at all, which is odd IMO.

Also, for giggles, here are some pics of my phone looking down on Red Hook from my apartment. Notice the network that says "T-Mobile" and my full bars.

EastEnder,

I do not have Verizon, so I can not comment on that. I still have my 210 number here.

Everyone I know here has a cell phone and they call me all the time. As for jobs and calling people about cars, they will not return the long distance number. T-Mobile did tell me I can change my area code and keep my same unlimited plan, though. I have just had this number forever and I do not want to change it. Maybe I will just get a second phone, lol.

I have T-mobile here in mainland and went there STX for a weekend and my phone worked pretty good, I was concerned about the bill because of the roaming but the bill was the same. So I guess Cody is right.

Cody:

When you transferred to T-mobile Puerto Rico, did you have to cancel your plan and restart it new with the Puerto Rico branch? Or was it just as easy as making a phone call? I talked to yet another customer service rep that said I would have to cancel my current plan and basically start fresh with Puerto Rico.

Breaking your contract in STT................
Since they don't have a footprint they will let you out of your contract, no charge.

I believe that voice does, thru AT&T. Data is limited, see T-Mobile's Domestic Data Roaming policy.

If you look at T-Mobile's coverage map, they show T-Mobile coverage on Puerto Rico but coverage in the USVI is provided by a "Service Partner", i.e. AT&T.
