I think it'll be a tough go for them at the Mill Harbor location. Friends of mine owned Smuggler's Cove and did very well when there were lots of transient Hovensa contractors with gobs of money to spend. But, as soon as they stopped staying at Mill Harbor and all that was left were owners and vacationers, Smuggler's Cove and every entity after them has failed in that location. I think people will be put off by the security gate, parking and long walk to the restaurant. I wish them well, but just my opinion.

The parking situation is exactly why I stopped going to that location.

We had lunch at The Sands (where H2O was located) yesterday. YUM! We sat in the corner table with glass doors on both sides so our view was basically sandy beach and the water-- beautiful. I had the Boursin Chicken Sandwich with jasmine rice and it was absolutely delicious. (and huge) My husband had the blackened mahi tacos with fried plantains and jasmine rice and he also left full and happy Really excited about discovering this new spot! We'll be back.
This morning we went to 40 Strand Street Eatery for breakfast. What another pleasant surprise! Hubby had the 3 eggs, toast, bacon and grits breakfast and I had angel food cake French toast with whipped cream, fresh strawberries, blueberries and fried bacon. WOW. Talk about calories--- and worth every one My thanks to the nice folks on this site who recommended them both.

Looks like The Sands is already having difficulties! While having dinner next door at The Palms on Saturday night, we noticed that The Sands looked closed. We had heard rumors about staff not getting their paychecks the week before. So, we walked up the beach to have a look see. Sure enough, the place looked deserted with no WAPA, no staff and no customers. The sliding glass door to the restaurant was open so we peaked in and found the manager sitting alone at the darkened bar. He suggested that everything was fine and they were just closed for the evening. Hmmmm.....not looking good.

What restaurant closes on a Sat. Night?
That would be crazy.
From their Facebook page:
Hey St. Croix! Restaurant is closed today (Saturday) for lunch and dinner but we will be back open on Monday at 3pm for $5 Burger Night!

I've never been to the sands after new management. So I can't comment on the food. But I have have heard a lot of rumors about the owners not paying their debts, from multiple people and about multiple incidents. Weren't they trying to open a few places on the island? There are a lot of good people running good restaurants and I try my best to support them all. I'll try if they make it through the slow season without burning too many bridges.

While out driving around the island today we passed by The Sands and saw it was chained with a sign saying something like 'temporarily closed but would be open soon'. The day we had lunch there it was delicious and I'm sad that they are having problems, possibly.
Also, the day we had lunch at The Sands we spoke to a man we thought was the manager. We complimented him on the food and he said they had BIG plans for the place, that they had also bought The Palms, AND that the owner had legally had the name of Pelican Cove changed to Turtle Bay. He said it was not legally named Pelican Cove anyway. I was sad to hear this since I've been going to Pelican Cove since I was a kid and hated to think of it called anything other than Pelican Cove.... I wouldn't post this if it was just something I'd heard through the grapevine, but the man was acting like the manager and speaking for the owner so I don't feel like I'm telling tales

Indeed, stories of The Sands unpaid bills and staff not getting paychecks have been circulating over the past few weeks among my fellow business owners.
I had met the real owner of The Sands about a month ago and of course he seemed nice. He regaled us with his plans to buy The Palms and we also heard later that they were taking over the old Golden Rail location at St. Croix Marine. Apparently, he has interests on Puerto Rico too.
However, at the end of the day, much of what we were told was BS and several businesses and employees have been burned. I did eat there a few times and was happy with my experience (and blogged about it here) but will admit the operation did look like it was being run on a shoestring.
On a positive note, there are other new restaurants in the construction phase like the Venezuelan themed concept at the old Shenanigans and Balter (Chef Digby) in downtown Christiansted.
