What happened to The Palms?

This restaurant has been going downhill for a while, but at least you could count on the Bar Pies (pizzas). No more. Made the mistake of ordering 3 for takeout for house guests, and they were embarrassing. The crusts were pre-manufactured cardboard, the sauce was bland, veggies were dried out and sparse, and I think the so-called pepperoni and cheese were fake. Used to like this place for a casual mid-island lunch or dinner, but after last night have crossed it off my list.

I ordered two pizzas to go from Un Amore at Five Corners on Saturday night. They were ready in 20 minutes and were delicious. I ordered sausage, onion and mushrooms. I did wish they had pepperoni but they were awesome anyway.

Phizz...try them next time as they are near The Palms.

Went to the newly re-opened Eat a couple of times the week before Easter. Kind of disappointing - obviously fresh fish but it was overcooked. Absolutely tasteless pumpkin soup on a different occasion, and cold and glommy (is that a word?) coconut dumplings. On a positive note, the service was great and we politely passed along the feedback on the food.

We were going to go to Eat@CaneBay but decided it was too far to take the risk of an unpleasant experience. But, we will try it sooner or later.

When I was in St. Croix a few weeks back, I was striking up some conversation at the local bar and the supposed NEW owner was there. From our conversation, I gathered the following: she came into some money when she got divorced, never ran a restaurant before, and couldn't understand why people didn't like her home made fries, as they are freshly cut and some customers complained they were cold and such. Obviously it will fail with the lack of understanding by her, how food must be consistent for each and every customer. If it's going to be successful, she needs to hire someone immediately with experience running a restaurant. Word of mouth will kill a place like this real quick. Again, this was a brief 15 minute conversation, and I already read here some bad reviews, but didn't allude to the fact that I was aware of some issues at Eat. Hopefully she figures it out.

we went to the Galleon on Saturday , i really enjoyed what we both had.

hubby got the crab cakes and the pork loin
i had the house salad and the chicken

both were really good.

we shared a brownie creme brulee for dessert with a raspberry ganache . i was expecting the chocolate lava cake, but when the new people took over, they dropped that. i am happy they dropped it because if they had not dropped it, i would not have had the chance to taste the creme brulee-and was it good

The folks at the Galleon are doing a good job. The new deck that has been built looks like a great place to enjoy a meal.

I've been told that the owners are going to re-open Zebo's in downtown Christiansted to take advantage of the casino crowd, which is good news too.

Have only been to Galleon twice this year. Once for dinner and once for Sunday brunch. IMHO, the food was better than before (and I was always a fan). Dinner was fabulous. The brunch menu was not extensive or exotic - just a few choices of regular breakfast fare. But I got an airy, and well-filled omelet, and hubby had perfectly poached eggs on his Benedict.

In the restaurant news department this week, we have learned that Sharkey's Bait Stand is vacating its long time Gallows Bay location and moving up the street to the space that Tutto Bene used to occupy (notice the For Sale sign is down). Apparently, Mike at Seaside Market wants to expand his grocery store empire and bought out the remainder of Sharkey's lease, making it worthwhile to buy the Tutto Bene space.

On a sad note, Fort Christian Brew Pub, the once popular boardwalk hangout for the underage teen set appears to be on its last legs as lease renewal negotiations are at a standstill. This isn't really new news as rumors of Brew Pub's demise have circulated for the past few months as Shupe's has built a solid following mostly at Brew Pub's expense.

In addition, the folks that brought you 40 Strand, the Rum Bar at Comanche and Toast have bought Ana's Living Food truck often parked at the foot of the Christiansted Bypass in Christiansted. They have also taken control of the Comanche Mill on the boardwalk, formerly the St. Croix Yachtless Club owned by Rob Low of Nelthropp & Low. We have learned that it will begin to serve pizza in the near future.

Finally, the Red Right Return Bar & Restaurant (at Bryan's Marine) is changing over to Serenity By The Sea offering a slimmed down menu of steak and pasta dishes. We wish them well, but, it will be an uphill climb (as the old operator discovered) getting people to pay exorbitant prices to eat in a parking lot.

That is all for now!

Before they changed hands, we over-agers used to go to Brew Pub many Friday's for the lunch specials and some decent draft beer. It was a nice place to hang out on lazy afternoons. What a disappointment it's become.

Only went to Red Right Return once. Service was terrible and the overpriced food was only so-so. I don't think a menu change is going to help.

A lot of eatery changes happening. Hope most of it is for the best. (Was underwhelmed by balter). Thanks for the update.

Great to hear about the Mill, it was sad to see it close down. Wishing the 40 Strand folks luck there. They seem to have a knack for success.

Ana's Living Food truck was supposed to be given away in an essay contest. Did that fall through? Just wondering.

They should be on St Thomas. Duffy's has made a pile of money with parking lot dining and dancing.

Update! Brew Pub has now closed. Derek Shupe (who used to work at Brew Pub) is negotiating with the building owner to secure a lease.

AMAZING burgers and fries... plus a bar in the old "low life" location (AWESOME building).

they serve till 10.. I find myself there often, those burgers are... just consistently good & exactly what I want from a venue like that.

Bummer. Last year I on PMV, I spent many mornings at 1100 with a pint and the paper considering a game plan for the day.

I'm not sure, but why attempt to brew beer down here when there are dozens of awesome American and European draft beers available here from Ale House or their distribution company Ales & Others?

If it were me, I'd put a dozen or more taps in, focus on the menu and forget about trying to brew.

I like Ale House, but IMO outside of their Belgian Beers- Inc'l sours (Huge and very good selection) there isn't a lot of varieties, especially if you want something with Hops (Which I think they'll admit) Their Pale Ale/IPA was pretty decent but very limited - Lagunitas, Serra Nevada, A Session IPA from Florida, a couple of Rouges and IIRC Dogfish head. I dont recall much for Lagers (One S-N). State side liquor store would be flipped on Ales Vs Belgian

If you haven't been stateside in a while, what they're doing with Beer and Cider would probably surprise you.

I wasn't impressed with the beer at the Brew Pub. I think if someone brewed good beer it would go over well with locals and tourists a like

This is a bit age dependent as well. Brew Pubs/Tap Rooms are vastly more popular with the 21-40 crowd

YMMV

went to the Bistro on saturday. I got a salad. they drowned it in dressing it was almost inedible. the salad might have been good had the dressing come on the side. If i go there again i will remember to get the dressing on the side. what hubby got was pretty good.

Galangal is good but expensive - and the owner guy seems to think that he is doing you a favor by letting you in...

I like the Bombay Club - nice atmosphere and pretty OK food, plus great A/C...

Rum Runners seems to be more of a local's expat drinking place these days. The food is just OK, but the location is great...

40 Strand is excellent - I have never had a poor meal there, and I have had a couple of outstanding ones...

La Riene Chicken Shack has probably the best chicken on the planet !!!

I hear good things about Balter, but I haven't tried it yet...

And the You Are Here Bar & Grill has great pizza...
