oh and i hear the newest restaurant downtown is going through cooks like toilet paper, you know maybe if the owners didn't lie to these people and then screw them when they got here they'd have some employees that are loyal

went to Zebos last night with my friend and had a great time. Mitchell was awesome, pairing our apps with wine. To start we had the mussels and cheese souffle. the mussels were amazing with little pomme frites on top. the cheese souffle was textury, but worth the try. Then we had the tomato/mozz plate with starfruit and basil and the margherita pizza - both were so delicious! for dessert we had the toffee sticky blackbeard rum something or other...it was like bread pudding. it was also really good. i like that they are using only local ingredients daily. although i need to figure out where THEY'RE getting their starfruit - it was amazing.

nice review for Zebos! I know Chef Dave is using as much fresh, local food as possible. Not sure where the starfruit is coming from, but he's been getting some herbs and greens from me here at UVI, sometimes tilapia too! Next time I see him I'll ask about those carambolas. I also think Mitchell is an awesome host. Make me feel welcomed, everytime!

Dave Vargas!!! He is absolutely the best Chef on STX. Zebo's is lucky to have him...so I am going to Zebo's next week. Anything this man serves is beyond fabulous...he hits the sweet-sour-salty-crunchy palet all on one plate, and it's all fresh ingredients...hope he'll be making some of his homemade Gnocchi @ Zebo's.

Our name, wetsite ( stcroixscuba.com ), and specifically our restaurant page ( stcroixscuba.com/restaurants ) have been mentioned here (thank you Juanita) so I thought I'd take this opportunity to invite any restauranteur (or patrons for that matter) to check out their listing and make sure it's accurate. If you Google or Yahoo "st croix restaurants" we're consistently on the first page. This listing is NON COMMERCIAL. No one pays us to be there (I've never even gotten so much as a free glass of wine). We do this as a service to the scuba divers around the world that we spend a LOT of money marketing to, trying to get them to visit St. Croix.

I'd love to say we eat out every night of the week so that we can personally attest to the accuracy of the listings but that's just not happening.

FWIW, we attempted to run a classified ad in the AVIS basically just asking what I'm asking here however they REFUSED to run the ad citing competing advertising. Huh? I wrote a two-page letter to Rena Broadhurst explaining that we're not in the advertising business, don't charge for listings, and basically aim for statesite and international tourists which aren't being reached by a local paper that doesn't have a website. Heck on our restaurant page we even say "once on island check the AVIS or St. Croix This Week for specific weekly specials and entertainment venues". But alas they still refused to run the ad (and never gave the money back--though I never went back to request it). Since then we no longer advertise anything in the AVIS.

But my griping about the AVIS isn't the reason for this posting, it's to request updated restaurant info for our wetsite. If you're a restauranteur please check your listing. There's a link for updating it.

Thanks.

Hey, Capt. Ed how's Scuba the dog? I haven't been listening to the radio for a long while but miss your ads in the morning. Always enjoyed them.

STXSCUBA-- I greatly appreciate your restaurant page! On our first trip back to the island in many years I printed it out and brought it down with us. VERY helpful with type of restaurant, price, phone # for reservations, etc. I've recommended your website to many people on the different vacation message boards I go on. Thank you!!excited

Scuba Dawg is doing great thanks. He's his usual self, passed out on the cool tiles of the store floor. I'm kind of envying him.

And Paula thanks for the kind words about our wetsite.

I've never tasted starfruit. What's it comparable to? Is it sweetish, bitter, like strawberries, or like cataloupe, soft, firm... Just wondering.confused smiley

I went to H2O's for the crab feast last night. It was very good, especially the shrimp cocktail at the beginning. The crab just kept coming and the service was great.

Starfruit, aka Carambola, should be sweet. Some trees have sour fruits, but more are sweet and watery. Buy grafted trees so you know what you are getting!

Thanks for your answers about starfruit ! I'll be looking forward to trying some on my next visit-- which can't come soon enough for me. And now I know what carambola means...

Ate at Salud Bistro last night and I gotta tell you it was out of this world. In spite of the fact that it was three deep with people the food came out in a timely manner . Their new chef is out of this world..I plan to go back tonight, the owner was so nice and helpful with the wine pairing...great fun place!

I didn't go through and read every post, but has anyone ever tried Angry Nate's, on the board walk? It is delicious, and they have the greatest staff! I'm on island about 1/2 of the year and you will always see me there! smiling

You know, I LOVE to eat healthy meals, so I like the tip about the tuna and veggies. Anyone else know of any restaurants with specific menu items that are really healthy. I know I can always ask for special prep, but I hate to do that. Just a piece of grilled fish or chicken with some salad or steamed (or stir-fied, if light) veggies, priced right, and I would be all over it!

If not mistaken, I think IHOP will have some selections. Anyone remember the menu when they were on STT?

I just googled IHOP. It doesn't look too promising for healthy! There was a talapia with veg, with hollandaise sauce. I guess they can always hold the sauce, but that was it. Everything else looked really high calorie/high fat.

I never look at healthy options but I think the IHOP menu was the same as the States. Hope the quality there will remain better than the downward spiral that happened here.

If a couple of the C'sted places offered just 2 or 3 choices like I described, and kept it under $15, even if it was early bird or just during the off season, I might not be in such a hurry to get my new stove installed!

Remember the Chart House early-birds. It was $15 for entree with rice or potatoes and included the salad bar. Best deal ever! Wasn't exactly what I'm talking about now, but it was a smaller portion and not too heavy, if you didn't pig out on the cavier and other goodies on the salad bar. I always got the orange-basil salmon. I have tried to duplicate it, but not successfully.

and if you're not eating healthy we think the PC fried conch (beaten extra well) is the best we've had.

I've been able to get a piece of grilled fish served on top of the house or similar salad at several places, including even Savant, works for me!
