OBGYN that has the new mammogram system and will do biopsy

Hello all,

I live in St Croix and I went to the hospital today and they found a lump on my breast. They are saying that it could possibly just be a cyst but I want to be 100% sure. I have three friends that have breast cancer and they said that there's looked like the way that mine is so I am paranoid. I heard that St Thomas has the new mammogram machine that can detect anything. I wanted to see if anyone knew the doctor that has that and a doctor that would do a biopsy as well. It is always good to get a second opinion.

You could call St. Thomas Radiology 774-0265 & ask about the mammo machine. I hope East Ender sees this because she's usually up on medical matters. Best of luck to you but don't borrow trouble. It may just be that - a cyst.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, get a second opinion and then get another one. I had the same situation, but, it fortunately was just a cyst. I had it removed and do not regret that surgery at all. Fortunately we lived in the states and I had good insurance. Good Luck to you............

Any radiologist, at the hospital or the imaging center, would be able to do an ultrasound guided biopsy if that is what they are recommending. Otherwise, a general surgeon could do it if ultrasound is not required to localize the area. If they are seeing something on a regular mammogram then a biopsy would tell you what it is. A digital mammogram is not needed.

If you had the initial Mammogram at the hospital, you could request the mammogram films be sent to one of the two imaging centers on St. Croix and ask that radiologist review the films. Did they do an ultrasound to see if it was fluid filled? An ultrasound is often done to confirm if the mass is a fluid filled cyst that can be aspirated.

I hope this helps,

Shannan Calhoon, CNM/ARNP

Dear- Do get your second opinion and mammogram. The sooner the better. I have been there - scared but cysts were aspirated in the doctor's office and all was okay. We are all thinking about you and thank you for reminding us all how important our check ups are - you are in my positive thoughts today!
