LoriSue:

Let me know what speeds you actually get on STX when you get back. When I tried an AT&T data card recently I got around 500Kbs. When I tether my I-Phone to my laptop I get in the range of 2Mbs or 4X the speed and no limits on the data.

Just read a study that the average stateside internet connection is 3.9mbps (putting the US at number 18 in the world). We are still at no more than 1mbps here. It's services like Netflix that are really showing us that we are falling behind. Everything is moving to the internet including television programming, I hope someone comes up with a solution that allows us to keep up with the Continent!

The technology is here and with Global Crossings on STX there is more than enough bandwidth available to connect to the WWW.

What is lacking is well funded competitors. On the mainland you have, Verizon, AT&T, Cablevision, Time Warner. Comcast duking it out. By offering higher speeds they hope to differentiate themselves from their competition.

Both Broadband VI and Choice claim in their advertising they can deliver connection speeds at up to 45Mbs, If either of them decided to offer 3Mbs for $39.95 I'm sure they could gain some market share.

Since 1 Mbs is $99 from VI Broadband I suspect the can grow market share simply selling 3Mbs at $101...

Hello,

It seems you guys have been successful on streaming movies from Netflix here in the VI. I on the other hand have not. I downloaded the hotspot file successfully and verified the new stateside IP address on the ip-address.com website, but Netflix still showed the error "Netflix Streaming Error Error Code: 8106-154-5008. You may only watch instantly via Netflix from the 50 United States and District of Columbia. Please try again from those locations........"

Can anyone Please help me out? Any suggestions or information is Greatly Appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can not be outside the continental US and get "now" viewing with Netflix. Sorry.

Well, I've done it as described here, and it works. I downloaded the hotspot, installed it, CONNECTED through it ( did you do that vpr?) and streamed movies. I had to install the streamlight player/plugin thing, (awful) and I had to mess with some settings (start:run:dxdiag:display:disable directDraw acceleration) but other than that it works fine. It is a bit slow, but not so slow as waiting for the mail.

All I'm saying, Bratt, is that you said it couldn't be done, and it can. I have comparable other interests too, and I found that ntfx streaming is comparable to hulu, but with slightly better quality.

To watch Netflix outside the USA I create a VPN to some where in the USA . Then Netflix thinks I am in the USA. I watch two or three movies a week with no problem. Do the research. I am not going to publish what service I use because I don't want Netflix to catch on and block my movie downloads.

I will say I have to pay for the VPN link I use, but it is worth it.

All,

I appreciate your responses! I see there definitely is a way and that is extremely encouraging. Time to do some serious research online.

Thanks ALOT Jim!

Arrgghhh...we downloaded the HotSpot thing and with an active connection still can't get Netflix or Blockbuster downloads to work. Maybe I need to try a few more times to see if I get a different I.P. address? Unless HotSpot has a bank of dynamic addresses to pull from I suspect Netflix and Blockbuster have caught on and blocked them.

G2G,

Try this: FreeVPN. I have been using it more often than Hotspot lately. It gives you 4 options instead of 1. It has been working for me, last tried earlier today.

I posted this on the other thread...not sure how playero23s is doing it for free but I've had great luck with HMA VPN which is pretty cheap. Here's the link to my blog entry about it: [www.blendblog.net]

FYI - Apparently, Netflix streaming has now been authorized for VI subscribers. Got an email earlier today with "Good news! Now you can watch instantly" in the subject line. Lo & behold, checked on my PS3 & on my PC, I'm now streaming in the clear (no proxies, VPN's, etc.).

Today was a good day...Can anyone else confirm this development?

Got that email, too. And I verified streaming works on a previously non-working DSL line/IP address. Yay! I do wish they were a little more specific in their email. Something along the tines of "Good news! Now you can watch instantly in the Virgin Islands!" That would have been more to the point. I was a little puzzled by the email, and had to verify that is what it was referring to.
