Netflix streaming now works in the VIs or at least St Croix. What a nice 4 of July weekend bonus! smiling

Thanks to Sean for pressing the issue to Netflix and for helping others figure a way into the heretofore walled garden until now.

Totally agree! Now if this weekend stays raining it won't be so bad being cooped up. smiling

I called Netflix and they confirmed that they now have the right to stream video to all US Territories and Puerto Rico. Time to shop with a new VCR with the Netflix App or a Roku.

So Roku works here? I tried emailing them but they never responded.

Yes, it does work here. I received an email from them yesterday saying it was now available. ! My husband and I were so excited we watched a disturbing episode of South Park on instant play! Yeah! The DVDs are great, but, in between DVDs now we have the option to watch instantly! At least until WAPA figures out how to charge us for it! big grin

What does WAPA have to do with it?

FWIW, if you can't wait you can get a Roku at Radioshack. Last time I checked they were in stock and $99 which is about $20 more than direct order but may be worth it on a rainy weekend! I use one on our bedroom TV and enjoy it, I use an XBOX 360 on my main TV for Netflix and that works well too.

Thanks for the kind words SunnyCaribe!

Could someone forward the email from Netflix to me please.
paradisesatellite@yahoo.com

Dish Network recently purchased Blockbuster. The plan is to offer over 100,000 movies on demand. They currently only offer mail service to the VI. I want to be sure they're aware of Netflix opening this market so maybe they can follow suit.

Disclaimer: For those of you that don't know we are an Authorized Dish Network Retailer in the VI.

I did not get the e-mail, but I just called Netflix customer service and they confirmed this!! Huzzah!

Okay, now how does it work? If I click start, can I stop it and pick it up later?

I get Netflix through my WII here in the states, and am moving next month....hoping it will work through that down there too. Good news, since I am bringing my 3 children.....good to have some movies!

I didn't get the e-mail either. Is it because I have the Sprint modem (which always allowed Netflix streaming, but was way too slow) or because I switched back to the $5/month plan because I couldn't stream? They have my VI mailing address, so they should have sent all of us the notice to encourage us to do more streaming or upgrade our plans. Very poor marketing IMO.

Our days of getting DVDs by mail will probably soon be a thing of the past. Where's our new broadband when I need it????

Maybe it's to people that asked to be notified? I did call them about it. They may have asked me if I wanted to be notified if things changed.

It allows you to resume playing whatever you stopped watching , later. Roku also has many free channels on the box to select. Crackle has free TV shows and films too. Much more as well. HULU Plus at 7.99 a month has MANY films and shows. All on ROKU. It connects to the internet cable and then TV, You can get a Cisco router outlet box to connect 4-5 things, then on to the TV with a long enough cable, which ROKU sends if order direct from them. EASY.

Ms411 I couldn't immediately find the info but I seem to recall that the old basic 599 plan does not include streaming, but all the others do, and there is a streaming only plan available too.

Ahhhh I had forgotten what roku was. You don't really need it at all if you have a xbox, wii or ps3 or a dvd player with apps or a tv with apps. It seems like most of the apps it has won't work here unless you hide your ip address or do what ms411 has.

Those news to streaming should note that not all titles are available for streaming, and that any particular movie's streaming availability comes and goes.

Hiya, what is ROKU and what did ms411 do

99 for the Roku is another example of items being more expensive in the VI. It's 89.99 at the RadioShack where I'm currently working.

Speedy,
I think I read incorrectly what ms411 did, but at the time it sounded like she had a stateside sprint internet account that allowed her to stream here.

Roku is just a box that has netflix, pandora and about 10 or so other apps on it, but new tv have those built in as well as the new dvd players so I don't see the point of roku. I already have a xbox 360, dvr, & apple tv so it seems redundant. You can also easily hook up your tv to a computer or just use a sling type device.

Go to Roku's web site to get the details on how a Roku box works and all the commercial programming available. It has many additional channels available besides Netflix. People are continuously creating both public and private channels available using a Roku. Some are free and others require a subscription.

One advantage of a Roku is that it has WiFi built in. No adapter required. (It also has a built in Ethernet jack.) Simple hookup, plug the Roku in and run an HDMI cable from it to your TV. (Also supports a composite connection using RCA type cables.)

If you decide you want a Roku you can order their XD model for $79.95 directly from Roku with free shipping by priority mail to the Virgin Islands.

How it will work for you may depend on your internet download speed and how stable your internet connection is. Roku recommends a minimum download speed of 1.2 Mbs. Not that Netflix offers much HD programming, but if they did the download speeds in the VI don't support it anyway.

The Roku comes with a thirty day free trial so if you don't like it or it doesn't work for you then you can return the Roku.
