Licensed Practical Nurse Jobs/Apartments?
August 29, 2011 07:37PM
I am a Licensed Practical Nurse and I am looking to relocate to St. Croix. I have visited the island twice this year, and my only concern is if I will be able to find a job as an LPN on St. Croix, and where to live. I have been looking for jobs as an LPN on St. Croix, but I haven't seen anything turn up. I also don't know what the process is for transferring my current license to the USVI. I went to the USVI Board of LIcensure, but there was very little information there.

I have no idea where to begin for contacting people in the health care field in St. Croix, or for rentals.

I also was concerned about shipping my car down because I heard it can cost anywhere from 2000-3000 dollars, and a friend living on the island told me that they had to pay 1000 cash up front for insurance.

There was an ad for an LPN in yesterday's Avis newspaper. As far as bringing your car or buying one here, it's really a personal choice. And yes, the insurance (along with most everything else) is expensive. Both times I've renewed (using two different companies) I've had to pay for the whole year up front. Good luck!

I am not very familiar with St Croix, but I would start with the nurse recruiter at the Juan Luis Hospital. Phone- 340-772-7316.

Just in case you aren't totally set on St Croix, here is the website for Schneider Regional on St Thomas: [www.srmedicalcenter.org]. If you want some more ideas over here, I'd be happy to supply you!happy

Nurses have a separate licensing through the Department of Health. I am not sure how internet savvy they are, you would be better off calling them.

Thank you so much for the number, I will definitely be calling to get some information.

I tried looking up the Board of Licensure in the USVI, but it doesn't appear that they update the site regulary and there wasn't too much information on what was needed to have my nursing license transfered down that way.

Any other helpful information you have I would welcome...

Thank you for everything!

Sometimes it works better to approach it from the opposite side of the problem. Call a local nursing agency and they will most likely have very up to date and accurate info on what you need to do to get licensed and good to go to work.

I contacted the hospital and spoke to the nursing recruiter, but they do not hire LPN's...only RN's. Are there any other medical facilities on the island like nursing homes/rehabs, visiting nursing agencies? Nothing is coming up when I search other than the hospital on St. Croix, everything else appears to be on St. Thomas.

I believe Continuum Care does. Not sure if you are up for hospice, but there is never a lack of work in that field.

Thank you onthespot, I have done Hospice nursing in the past and I currently work for a Visiting Nursing/Hospice Agency up here in Massachusetts, so it would definitely be of interest to me. smiling I will check it out!

I have been getting so discouraged with the lack of nursing jobs (except for RN's), but I am assuming that they must be out there!

Lots of hiring freezes. Have you looked into getting your Independent Nurse Provider number? You can work with the individuals, and bill directly to Medicare, or whatever insurance. Cut out the middle man. Not always more money, but less hassles. You can bill onlne, every day if you want, direct deposit to your checking account, or let shifts pile up for up to six months if you want to be paid in a different year, say, for tax reasons. wink

Seaview Home Health and Continuum Home Hospice provide services on both St Thomas and St Croix. If you would consider St Thomas, I might come up with more ideas. wink

Thank you for referring me to SeaView Home Health, I was able to talk with them today. They are hiring LPN's for per diem hours, so at least that is a start. If you can think of any other Home Health Agencies on the island send them my way!

It seems as though there are a lot more nursing jobs for LPN's on St. Thomas. How long of a ferry ride is it from St. Croix to St. Thomas? Would it be worth it to look in St. Thomas for jobs if I am living on St. Croix?

At this time there is no ferry service between STT and STX. When there is service it takes 90 minutes one way. The ferry is cancelled if the water is rough. RT cost is about $90, when it is running.

So it seems as though getting a temporary nursing license on St. Croix will take a little longer than planned, are there any nurses on this message board that have any information regarding applying for endorsement? By what I read on the USVI Board of Nursing site, it appears that I would have to pick up my nursing license in St. Thomas, I'm just trying to see if this is accurate. I was hoping to have it mailed to me back at home so I would have everything in order before I make the move.

Also, are jobs difficult to find in general, if I were to try to pick up something full time on the island until my nursing license was straightned out? I would really love to be there by November, but I just want to make sure that I have something in place for work before going down.
