The advice you've already been given is very accurate and comes from people who have done this before.

YES, road tax is collected at a per-pound rate.

NO, they don't acutally put your car on a scale.

GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) for any vehicle can be found simply by doing a quick Google search (i.e., "gross vehicle weight Scion xB"wink. Mutiply this by .16, and there's your road tax.

I don't understand why such a high percentage of people on this board always see the glass half empty instead of half full. Definitely not everyone but a much higher percentage of posters then in other forums that I frequent.

Huh??

I was not questioning the advice. I was thrilled. It was kass that was saying it was invalid. Her (His) post just set me off as I had confrontational comments on all my posts this morning.

Anyway, I am letting it go.

So jbatl with all these people that have done this before has anyone had stuff go missing? Anyone know?

ChanelCinq, I am only trying to help you avoid making a bad decision. You are assuming that the .16 per pound is for the weight of stuff you are shipping in your car, and you have been told it isn't. It's the road tax on your vehicle which is based on gross vehicle weight, not putting the car on a scale. The shipping company you spoke to has not quoted you any price on how much it will cost to ship your car.

I have suggested -- in a positive manner -- that you should call and clarify this information because it conflicts with everything I am finding in my research on how best to ship my Scion XB (yes, I have the same car as you!). I don't know you but I don't want you to get a bill for $800 for shipping when you could have spent $500 to ship some other way.

I am sorry that you see helpful warnings as negative. I wish you luck and hope you stop hearing negative things where there is only help.

Just out of curiosity when did the rules about packing one's car with one's belongings change? It's been my understanding for years that (although for several years after I came here, loading up one's car was accepted) a car has to be completely empty before shipping. I remember even just a couple of years ago that a couple of posters were complaining that tire jacks and a couple of other loose items were missing from their otherwise totally empty vehicles when they arrived. Is this return to the car-packing something new?

We spoke to a shipping company a few weeks ago and they told us the car needed to be completely empty before shipping.

If you are shipping a vehicle from the states it must be empty. ChanelCinq is coming from PR and the rules may be different. I would recommend getting it in writing and do not put much of value in the vehicle.

I would get a 20 ft container and put everything including the car in it and ship it as one unit. You put the lock n it and you unlock it when it arrives. Put the car in last so you can drive it off before they put it on wheels. If that is possible, it might be the best way.

Sorry kass I guess I read your post wrong. There were 2 other negative posts I read on threads before this one and I read yours as negative. But you had said I should call and clarify and that is how I confirmed it when I called the shipping company in Puerto Rico as I has posted right above. So I didn't understand if you wanted me to call the same company again and double clarify. Anyway I think it was just misunderstandings on both ends.

Yeah this may be why they allow it as I am coming from PR.

LOL, really! I have to look into containers. I really don't know much about them.

I think we are moving to two different islands. I think you are going to STX. I am almost positive I am going to STT. I flew out last month to meet with nurse recruiters on both islands and many things directed me towards STT.

Good luck with your move.

We are moving to two different islands. But it doesn't mean I'm never going to be on STT.

Have fun!
