No A/C for me! Just open windows and doors, fans and the breeze.

Louvered windows here (glass or metal, window or door) almost always have screens in place additionally. Wouldn't be much point in having them otherwise as when opening them to let the breezes flow through you'd be letting in all the bugs too ...

Thanks, yeah after I posted I thought about how you could still have a screen with the glass slats. And I guess I am not that observant because my kitchen also has glass slats but they look more like French windows and the way they are designed you don't even notice the bars.

When people said windows I thought of the usual stateside windows. But it does sound like you guys do have more windows then we have here.

Even in August? Now that I live at the beach it is cooler but when it's really hot I still run the AC for about 15 min at night jsut to cool down the room.

But isn't STX a tad cooler than STT? Or was I just looking at weather on off days? I know they are only 50 miles apart.

The airport on STT is on the south side and I live on the north side and one of the first things people notice when they visit for the first time is how much the temp drops the instant you cross to the north side. We don't have AC either, just a box fan and it's comfortable.

Nope...my house doesn't even have a/c installed. I live at a very high elevation where it rarely gets above 80. The higher you are, the cooler. In the summer I keep the porch doors open at night to allow the breeze in, and have the ceiling fan on. In the winter, it gets too cold to have the doors open so I usually just use the fan. If it is really cold (60's), then I don't even turn the fan on, and am usually sleeping under a mound of blankets. I've lived by the beach and it seemed to always be hot.

I'm going through a big adjustment now that, after almost 28 years living on the comparatively warm South side and East end areas of St Thomas and not too high above sea level, I'm now facing North at a much higher elevation. It is seriously COLD here in the morning and at night. I moved in last September and it was very comfortable with just the breezes and the ceiling fans on low but right now I go down the mountain to thaw out every day! Friends sent me little warm "socklets" with non-skid nubbins on the soles as well as a pair of fingerless gloves - and they are being well used!

The temperature posted on whatever weather site you use is usually recorded at the airport - wunderground allows you to pick your weather station - I use CaptainJay - APRSWXNET - it is located Northside east of Magens at a fairly low elevation. The temperature on each island will vary by as much as 10 degrees F -- from E to W - from S to N - and from sea level to Mt. tops. -- the rainfall varies even more dramatically by area - note the vegetation to gauge the rainfall, bigger trees with broad leaves vs. cactus and sticker bush - local micro climates are fairly easy to identify by observation and comparison.

Barking Dogs-to PR , Glass,Screen, AC. Weather. vegetation. space heaters this one really morphed. I understand the price of tea in China is going up due to barking dogs that scare the tea leaf.:S

It's the reason that I always laugh when someone complains about off topic posts. It's hard to find a thread without an off topic post, and most of us are guilty at one time or another. Go with the flow!

OK trainwreck everytime you mention your neck of the island it always sounds good. I will definitely check it out in April.

So it does seem that STX is a tad cooler than STT. 60's, wow, I can't imagine. Now that I have been in PR a while, the 70's at night is cold for me. :-)

While diving. He was out diving, and their car was broken into while it sat by the beach. That's how I understood it.

Opps, sorry. I just got home from school and I was quickly catching up for the evening and read it really fast. Thanks Julie. Still makes me feel better it was the car and not the house.

Update...
Yes, the car incident occurred at the beach. We had taken our guests diving, and returned to the car to find the window broken out and the items inside stolen. Normally, we leave the car unlocked and have no valuables inside, but since we had guests - and they insisted on bringing "things", we told them to hide everything under the seats, etc. And, of course, we locked the car. Dumb mistake! We would've been better off just putting the items on top of the car so they wouldn't have had the trouble of going through the car to find the items.

Back to the dog situation...
I went to the police station this afternoon to file a formal complaint. I'm a very detailed person, and had four pages of documented calls, etc. that have taken place since October. When I told them I wanted to file a complaint regarding the barking dogs, they told me that they couldn't do anything about barking dogs. So, I said, "Just a minute please." I pulled out my cell phone and put on the recorder, and repeated what he had said, "So, you mean that even though there is a noise ordinance past midnight, and I was told that I could come down here to file a complaint, that I'm not allowed to file a complaint? And, you are telling me that there is nothing that you can do to assist me?" I know that he was ticked off, but he said, "Uh, just a minute," then walked into the back room. Miraculously, he returned with paper and started writing down information. Before I knew it, I had a case number and my report had been filed.

So, we'll see...

Meowruff, I totally feel your pain. I've been there.

My advice: don't bother wasting your time with the police or any other organization here. They are pathetic and won't get a thing done. In the end, you'll end up spending a ton of time and energy with no results.

The best answer is, honestly, try talking to your neighbors yourself. I know it can be intimidating, but, on this island, it's really the only way to get things done.

If that does not work, and you have tried everything and are TRULY at your wits end AND you know for a fact that those dogs are not being treated humanely... well, then there is of course another very simple way to end the problem for good and put the dogs -- and yourself -- in a better place.

NugBlazer,
I have spoken with the neighbors - repeatedly. They told me that God's gift to dogs was for them to bark! If you notice my name (meowruff), I could NEVER take another animal's life. I know that at 3am, all kinds of things may run through my mind, but I'm an animal lover, and know that it is not their fault, but the fault of irresponsible pet ownership. But, I do understand what you are saying.

Update...
Everybody, please sit down because you won't believe what happened today.
THE POLICE SHOWED UP! Yes, they actually came by and spoke with the neighbors about the situation. In fact, they showed up TWICE today - and said that they will be coming back later to follow up. When the police officer came by, my husband happened to be outside and spoke briefly with him, directing him to the neighbor's property. The officer saw the dogs, and pulled his gun because he was scared that the dog was going to charge after him. My husband had to laugh because he just said, "Yep. That's what we've been dealing with!"

So, we'll see...
