Not much price difference, One Love on Northside Road still the cheapest $4.19

Plaza West gas station $4.15 yesterday.

I go to South Carolina and pay cash for $3.60 a gallon.

One Love (next to Avis Building) went from $4.19 this am to $4.25 by noon.

Glad to be moving soon to Ohio where gas is currently selling at $3.69/gallon where we will be re-locating. It's getting really old with the "raping" by outgoing Hovensa who keeps raising the price of gas refined in February plus the ridiculous markups by independent gas station owners.

Gas in Louisville this afternoon was 3.89. It can change hourly. It's weird.

I just paid more per gallon than ever in my life - on STT it was $4.73 and that was 'discount Sat.' in Frenchtown - the posted prices in the stations along the way there were $4.98 for regular.

Hess gas stations along I 95 from Florida to Pennsylvania are all about 3.62 for regular and 3.79 for hi test...amazing, that the selling price is less than the wholesale price on the island where it has been made!!!!
The states have all sorts of taxes and federal taxes that are included in the local price...not just the VI gross sales cost added to the dealers.
Asked at one station that I filled up in Virginia how much profit they made...just a for my info question and was told that they make about 37 cents per gallon...plus they pump thousands of gallons each day at the service centers adjacent to the interstate!
Just did a road trip and noticed the cost of gas along the way....

Hess has a gasoline refinery in Port Reading, New Jersey. It's my guess they provide gasoline to their east coast stations from this refinery. plus a much lower price for their crude which comes from places other than Venezuela. So shutting down Hovensa is no big deal for Hess from a supply or profit/loss standpoint..

Here's a tidbit that should make everyone wonder about the Hess deal with PDVSA to form Hovensa. There is a refinery in the U.S. that refines Venezuelan crude and it's Citgo in Houston, Tx. Citgo is basically a Venezuelan company that buys crude from PDVSA like Hovensa used to. As of today 4/15/12 Citgo gas stations in and around Houston are selling regular gas for anywhere from $3.63 to $3.75/gallon. That is not that much more than the current wholesale price here on St Croix of $3.58/gallon.

Good news in the AVIS---gas prices went DOWN .12 cents at the rack------------hopefully we see the price change soon at the pumps.

A couple of things to keep in mind. PDVSA got the better of Hess in the Hovensa deal. Hovensa (or really the Hess side of the JV) was stuck buying disadvantaged crudes at a price that turned out to be higher than market rate. Then to make things worse for Hovensa, they were contractually obligated to see wholesale in USVI for the price of crude. In other words they paid higher than market rates on the Venezuelan crude and for USVI sales (a small portion of overall output) they ate the cost of production (cost of boiling oil into refined products.)

A retailer in the U.S. like Citgo outlets have neither of these issues and even Hess gas stations only received a portion of their product from Hovensa (Hess used the spot market for purchases, their Port Reading operation for some products, etc.)

It doesn't surprise me one bit that PDVSA got the upper hand with Hess and in hindsight it was the beginning of the end.. Hess was much better off when they refined non-Venezulean crude.

BTW -still haven't seen any reductions by independent owners on price with Hovensa cutting regular gas price by $.12/gallon almost a week ago.

Daily News apr 26, rack rate goes down by .19cents-----lets see if it goes down at the pumps

So if gas prices supposedly went DOWN .12 cents at the rack the week of April 16, and then are supposed to go down .19 cents this week, that means that by next week we SHOULD see a drop of .31 cents???

Because it doesn't look like the price has gone down for over 2 weeks now. At least as far as I can see, they've remained the same for the past 2 weeks. They're just gouging us all!!!!!!!

Island living has been a positive experience for us for the most part, but one thing we won't miss when we go back to NE Ohio, is the collusion, gouging, or lack of ethical business behavior from time to time by certain independent gas station owners. The only place I've seen any drop in price from the $.12/gallon price decrease by Hovensa about 2 wks ago is Tide Village. They went from $4.39 to $4.29. Everyplace in Sunny Isle and along North Shore road into C'Std has not dropped. one cent. This kind of crap makes people who live here take it up the you know where while tourists could care less. So if it pans out Hovensa drops another $.19/gallon, it's anyone's guess when and how much the greedy boys will drop the pump price.

Station next to Plaza West was $4.15 last week, so we've kind of gone out of our way to buy gas last 2 weeks.

Akron, Ohio lowest gas prices are $3.51 to $3.58 for regular -- so here I come!

I have a question about gas prices in the states--I've noticed when visiting that most stations in the states sell gas mixed with ethanol (usually about 15%). Could the mix be cheaper than gas w/o ethanol?

10% ethanol is the norm in most states. Since the most common source of ethanol in the U.S.is corn, the process to produce the starch ends up being more expensive to produce a gallon of ethanol than a gallon of gasoline refined from crude oil. So in reality it makes gasoline in the states "more expensive" than if it were 100% petroleum refined gasoline.. Ethanol @ 10%, gasoline @ 90% came about because the EPA mandated lower tail pipe emissions several years ago. .

So down here, there is no ethanol in the gasoline, or at least I don't think there is. There is no logical reason whatsover that gas prices here should be $.40/gallon above the U.S. national average.

In Brazil their autos/trucks/buses are engineered to run on 100% ethanol. Their source for the starch is sugar cane which they have plenty of.

Yesterday I was getting gas at the Glynn station across from Echo tire. When the pump approached $49.90 I slowed it so I could stop at an even $50. At $49.99 I gave it just a tiny squeeze and it jumped from $49.99 to $51.01 It literally skipped a dollar. I told the owner about it and he blew it off asking me how low was your tank when you pulled in.........Absurd! What does that have to do with anything?

Makes me want to take a 5 gallon gas can and measure what I'm paying for before I dump it in my vehicle.

We went to a cheap-price station in stx once and our vehicle took more gas from their pump than the capacity of the truck. Last time we went there.

Sky, I'd report them to DLCA. Not sure if would do any good but that's a pretty easy one for them to investigate and shut down if they are scamming this blantantly.
