The Police do catch scumbags once in a while

I saw this article in the VI Daily News and I thought two things were notable. One was that the police officer who initiated the arrest was off duty and just happened to notice suspicious activity. The second was the age of the suspects - I guess I always assumed the random roadside car break-ins were being committed by young punks, not old farts (although both were younger than me). At any rate, the off-duty police officer should be recognized for taking proactive action when he could have just as easily ignored the suspicious activity.

Those mid thirties "old farts" are probably the fathers of those 16 year old gunslingers who are terrorizing the islands. The only difference is that the kids carry guns and the fathers just rip everyone off. The fathers know they will get less jail time if they aren't carrying a weapon.. The kids are too young to care.

Wouldn't it be great if you had to have license to breed. Most of our problem here is that we have children having children. Wouldn't it be great if you had to show you were grown up before you became a parent.

Yes, We need to reward good police work. We need to develop a police department that is proud to defend the community. It is important to recognize that all police departments through out the world are made up of local people. That is very true in the Virgin Islands. When we reward those officers who put duty above local pressure, then we will all be winners.

Excellent to hear for sure.
Maybe they will get House Arrest like they give the murderers.
That will teach them.

haha a breeders license, I like it but that makes too much sense for this world.

They should have to buy breeders insurance too

Why do people have the right to impose poverty on children? Its child abuse but our govt. will give these reckless unfit parents huge rewards and subsidies to do it. shame on us humans

Bringing a life into this world should be a responsibility not a right, you should have to demonstrate competence at being a decent parent at least

Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but good luck with that argument. In this country, the right to bear children runs a close second to the right to bear arms.

It is unfortunate that the requirment to provide for 100% of the cost doesn't coincide with that "right".

Most of our problem here is not "children having children"...our root problem is based on living in a decadent, capitalist society that values the pursuit of money above everything else. No amount of police work is going to put a dent in that.

There are probably about fifty real, hardcore criminals on St. Croix, out of a population of about 55,000. It's the same people doing the same stuff all the time. Lots of mid-thirties parents are raising well-behaved families...in fact, well-behaved families are the norm here.

Take some lessons from the Arabic/Muslim community. Have closely-knit families that take care of each other and keep their culture intact.

Take a test...count the number of people of Arab descent in these two places:

1. The Old Folks Home (Herbert Grigg, et al)
2. The jail (prison, lockup, hoosegow, etc)

I stand by my statement that "children having children" is one of the major factors in subsequent deviant behavior. I agree that most families here, including many started by teenage parents are not criminals. However crime statistics tell us that a majority of young criminals were born to very young unmarried teenage mothers. So my comment while not very PC (politically correct) is actually true.

I agree that some cultures with strong family structure seem to produce more law abiding children.

Your statement is correct. However, nothing can be done about the situation because of the root cause.

Our children are exposed to a tremendous daily barrage of stimuli that encourages them to, for example, be sexy. Of course they will progress to actually having sex at a young age.

Nobody is going to tell the advertisers to stop sexing up the children for money, so the situation is unfixable. It takes more than just the parents to raise good children.

Maybe, but it's a good place to start.

I agree with you Jah.
There's also a culture of too many of the good people that tolerate bad behavior and look the other way. Those same people dont rise up to demand good schools and fixed roads. And that's not about capitalism at all. So what is it about?

I have always worried that in the US we promote bad images and prohibit natural ones. It has always surprised me that Americans are such prudes. Nudity is a no no on our TV programs.

In Europe nudity on TV is common place. It is not unusual to see commercials with full nudity during prime time. I remember the first time I saw a shampoo commercial with a nude shower scene. You go to the beach and nude people are everywhere. There is nothing wrong with nudity. We were all born that way. There is also nothing wrong with sex, but in American sex is stigmatized.

Now take violence. Violence is OK in the US. It starts with our cartoons and childrens toys. Look at our movies and television shows. Murder and violence everywhere. In Europe violence on TV is frowned upon. America is broken in many ways.

The very first movie in the U.S. to receive a PG-13 rating was also deemed (at that time) the most violent movie ever made, with a violence metric of something like one violent act every two minutes. So there you go.

You're making some huge generalizations. Europe is a large continent. Which countries in Europe are you specifically referring to?

You're probably right about the generalization. Most of the European TV that I watch is from Denmark, France, Germany and Greece. These are available on the Atlantic satellites that we can get here in the VI. I like watching EuroNews.

Oh, you're basing your "facts" on watching some European TV. I thought you'd traveled throughout Europe which is where my confusion came from. Thanks for clarifying.

big grin I lived in Germany for eight years...the first time I saw a soap commercial on German TV, they showed the entire nude female. My jaw dropped.
I went to a German supermarket and saw a vacuum cleaner on display. The carton that it came in featured a large photo of a fully nude female using the vacuum cleaner.

One thing I did like, though...they never interrupted the shows with commercials. All the commercials were shown during the first ten minutes.

I went to hang out at a lake one summer weekend with some of my buddies. I had no idea what to expect, but when we got there the girls were all nude...this was perfectly normal summertime behavior. Not much of a summer in Germany, so people go nuts when there is warm weather. As Americans, we were not used to such displays so we stared a lot, which was considered to be very rude.

I could go on and on...I went to a sauna one day, and being highly self-conscious I kept my robe on. A pair of female breasts appeared through the steam, and the nude female they belonged to politely asked me to remove my robe, since I was the only person wearing one...that was considered rude also. She said "You're doing something wrong"...took me a while to figure out what exactly I was doing wrong, with my rudimentary knowledge of the German language.

Interesting times...

I think OT was just being her usual contrarian self. She didn't disagree with my observations, she just jumped in to "disagree".

Not at all. I'm not contrary just for the heck of it. I was born and raised in the UK and have traveled extensively throughout Europe. All my family is in the UK; I have many friends throughout Europe; I read the European press and I certainly didn't just jump in to arbitrarily disagree, simply questioned your source of knowledge based on your generalizations which I found questionable in a few aspects.

The acceptance of nudity was pretty much a non-issue but the assertion you presented that, " In Europe violence on TV is frowned upon" was. If you'd really care to extrapolate on that then feel free but comments about my being my "contrarian self" are really a bit rude and assumptive.
