I heard on the radio that the road has been deemed private. This has to be good news for those that live there

Here's the write-up from the Source:

No doubt it will indeed give Bert cause to get all puffed up and blustery ...

Bert says he is going to put gates up at Grove Place and Frederiksted with signs that to say who can come in.

He's so funny....

You kidding? He wants to put that sign at the airport!

I wonder why they don't build more side roads in certain areas with compacting gravel, rather than asphalt.
A lot easier, cheaper, and faster to repair.

But then all those people wouldn't be able to milk folks and the government for regular (and unnecessary if, as you point out, done correctly, repairs). SO not the Crucian Way.

Happy Liberty Day. D. Hamilton Jackson would be appalled by Bert.

Well, there are people in your country who would love to put a sign on the White House and restrict it to certain people...so I guess Bert is in good company.

Bert is a Black man who understands the importance of keeping his heritage. It is wonderful that people of all colors, shapes, and sizes can come to friendly old St. Croix and live in neighborhoods like JF with no problems. We are Crucians...we welcome everybody, as long as they don't treat us like garbage. We like to mix, and we don't like people who want to only mix with their own. We don't like to feel left out in our home. Many people come here to live and never understand the Crucian character. You get flamed here when you try to provide some insight. Just because you live in JF doesn't mean you can't cultivate friends in William's Delight. You should. They want you to.

Bert and people who look like him would be unwelcome in many gated communities in America. Some of you who severely criticize him should try to understand the Black struggle in your country, its effects on Black men, and the ongoing challenges we face. You cannot divorce these things from the attitude of a man like Bert Bryan.

At least all he wants is unrestricted access to a public beach.

it seems like you think the people of jf think it is a black issue when it is not-what is the big deal about showing your id?

i thought, and i could be wrong, that people who dont live in jf and want to use the beach didnt want to show id to use the beach?

It is definitely NOT a Black issue...that has been established.

It is an issue of PERCEPTION. I tried to explain that the Crucian character resents the PERCEPTION of being excluded. The perceived exclusion could just as well come from a St. Lucian, Trini, or Puerto Rican.

It becomes a Black issue when, in Bert's mind, he would never be allowed the sort of welcoming diversity in someone else's home that they find here.

Imagine a bunch of Crucians going to Trinidad, moving into a gated community, and telling Trinis they have to show ID to go to a beach. It would not end well.

"Public" vs. "Private" property is not a race issue, no matter how much anyone tries to make it a race issue. Show an ID, respect the law and the inherent private property rights associated with VI law, or find another beach. The Attorney General's Office has established the law on this issue. Let's find something else to blame on race.

Like I said...when you try to give some insight, people throw up barriers.

Once again, it is NOT a race issue...I mentioned some of Bert's background so that you can have some insight into his character.

You need to understand that Bert and his followers resent having to show ID in order to access what they consider to be cultural heritage.

I get it. I am someone who has personally been victimized by my family background. It is troublesome to even talk about folks being victims of racism in the VI, when the overwhelming majority of citizens are black, with many of whom only knowing of racism by what is taught in history books. Racism is everywhere and stupid people are still racists. But the VI is not a place where racism is rampant.

People will find racism with anything if they choose to. That's the worst kind of anger.

crucians live in jf too. i still don't see what is so hard about showing id. it should not be a problem-it has been established that this is private property. i would not want strangers traipsing through my yard to go to the beach.

It sounds as if the AG is respecting the historic precidents of property, access and the use of traditional right-of-ways

Native Crucians are not indigenous peoples. While their culture should be celebrated like any other unique culture in America, they should also be treated like all Americans, -equally. You do not correct old injustices by creating new ones.

I've read and heard quite a bit of what Bert and his supporters want They believe the island is "theirs" by virtue of birth and culture. . Which also translates in this case to race. But they and their point of view are not unique. I do not have to be Crucian to "understand". It is not just a local issue. There have been other separatist groups in many places and times with similar birthright claims, and there will continue to be such separatist groups anywhere men, fueled by their own ignorance and ambition and sense of entitlement, can find an audience. Fortunately, most Crucians disagree with the man.

Bert has more in common with the KKK than with D. Hamilton Jackson. Racism is racism, and anyone who tries to bestow privileges upon a group of people at the expense of another group is a racist. It is embarrassing that he sits on our board of elections. It is a shame that anyone listens to him, just as its a shame anyone listens to racist white folks in other places.

On this issue it was never about denying access to people who wanted to enjoy the beach in JF. It was about Bert Bryant's self aggrandizing and racist grab of attention.

Bert ignored all facts about the roads being private and got people up in a frenzy claiming that they were going to be denied beach access when no one was trying to do that just to get himself in the paper. Thankfully the VI is a place where at the end of the day intelligence trumps racist grandstanding and the AG wrote a fantastic opinion on this matter.

I found it embarrassing that our senate invited Louis Farrakhan to speak in Frederiksted a few years ago. Louis Farrakhan is a racist. His Nation of Islam is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a Hate Group. Yet our senate saw fit to invite him here as a motivational speaker. This was disgraceful and racist.

I've been following Addlebrain's "career" for close to 30 years now and nothing in his "background" can excuse his intolerance, outright racism, his bullying tactics, his scaremongering and his criminal acts other than that he's a classic sociopath. He doesn't have a clue about his "cultural heritage" either and he can sport his dashikis 'til the cows come home but that doesn't alter the fact that when he went to visit his African "homeland" many years ago he was actually told to leave the country because his hysterical attempts at rabble-rousing weren't tolerated.

Or do we, as whites, notice racism more here because it is usually directed at us?

Possibly and more likely that the majority of white people who move here come from predominantly white communities and aren't used to being in any minority group.

Which is why I disagree with spee1dy's observation that, "there is more racism on this island than i have seen anywhere else in the states".
