Why Are The Banks Closed Today & Monday?

Folks can have all the cultural celebrations that they want, but isn't there a law that prohibits banks from being closed for more than three consecutive days?

They close 1/2 day today I think.
Some branches open on Sat. - 1/2 day and then Sunday is 3 Kings Day so they have to have Monday off and will reopen on Tuesday.
Any banking tranctions you do today or Sat. (if they are actually open) will not be credited or debited to your account until sometime on Tues. Such is life in the tropics!
I, for one, am ready for all the Christmas holidays to be over!

Happy 3 Kings Day!

I can't believe that banks and businesses would close for a children's parade. Like that's important to the majority of people.

I would have thought the 'majority of people' on STX have children?

the query by the op intrigued me... so i searched and could only find a lot of people asking the question, and some state laws addressing the number of business days a bank could be closed... perhaps there is something somewhere out there. I will keep my eyes peeled.

but i did find a web site called bankingquestions.com (the things i find on these infernal internetz!) and here is what they say:

Closing Times for Banks

I heard that banks aren't allowed to close for three consecutive days. Is that true? If so does the rule apply to credit unions?

That is an old urban myth as far as we can tell, and the question is generally "more" than three days as long holiday weekends are common. Certainly there is no federal law regulating this. There can be state laws which will control where you live.

Most banks and credit unions do not like to close for longer periods than three days because even with ATMs, debit cards and internet banking, many customers wouldn't be served if they couldn't meet and speak with a customer service representative. Some things must still be done face to face. That said, in some instances you can find only limited services available and in times of crisis there may be no services available. Hurricane Katrina is one instance where some banks were either closed for a few extra days, or only branches out of harms way were open. Still, in many of these kinds of scenarios, services available over the telephone, internet or with a debit card are open because of the banking industry's off-site and redundant backup practices.

best to you,
anita.

Chase. Free on line bill pay. Deposit checks using by sending an image via smart phone. Statements online and exportable to quick books. Bank 24/7 via your phone, poolside, in a speedo.

Ditto with Citibank. I have a firstbank account and receive local checks all the time...haven't been in a branch for 6 mos. Thank goodness for mobile check depost. Usually clears immediately too.

One other thing: you can't open a Citi account under a VI address (at least I don't think so), but you can change it to a VI address once its set up.

If I had lived somewhere near a Chase or Citi branch in the states, I would definitely have opened an account before moving. Photo check deposit is one of the best uses of technology ever.

Now I no longer have a stateside address, so these options aren't available to me, alas.....

For those who have photo deposit, do your banks have a limit on the amount you can deposit? I have PNC and checks can't be over $2500 and I can only do a max of $5k a month. Do your apps allow the larger 3.5 x 8.5 inch business checks? I can't do this size on my iPhone with PNC either. Thinking of switching over.

I have deposited the larger checks. Citibank allows a max of $1000 per day. Don't think there is a limit...if there is I've never come close to reaching it (td)

I'm not sure but you can write me a check for $5000 and I'll give it a try and let you know!

:D

Thanks for the input, everyone. Looks like there are better arrangements out there. The way we get paid is feast or famine. This happens to be a feast month after a lengthy starvation period. Takes so long to clear through Bank of STX, then transfer back to where the bills get paid.
