Mountain biking trail recommendations (STX)

Are there any trails or dirt roads on St Croix that are particularly suitable/scenic for mountain biking (intermediate level, not crazy steep or rocky). Anywhere on the island is fine, but would be great with some options closer to home out East.

Also any info about areas that are off-limits to mountain biking would be helpful.

Just past the radio telescope take the road up to Goat Hill as far as you have the legs to go.

Goat hill is really rocky I would not do it... light house is good maybe to short. If I was going to mountain bike look on google maps for scenic road that starts near camabola beach resort and ends at the light house... it says scenic road but most vehicles cannot make it. The road is dirt part of the way and narrow. There are a few more roads north side that would be fun as well.

My friend was telling me there was a great path right next to the entrance to that scenic road by the lighthouse. He said it goes into the rainforest and was great. I have not checked it out yet but exploring that area may be worth it.

Thx for the tips! Will def check out Spring Gut Rd. I've hiked parts of Scenic Rd above Carambola and it's definitely on my bucket list to do the whole stretch on the bike. The Hams Bluff trail is very steep so won't be pedaling up there anytime soon.

The first (lower) part of Goat Hill from the telescope side is probably doable (haven't been all the way up Goat Hill yet), as well as the Isaac and Jack Bay trails from Pt. Udall (though the Jack Bay trail was quite overgrown when I hiked it a couple of months back).

hey Rev

I wouldn't recommend biking on the Jack or Isaac Bay trails. Lots of folks hike these trails and you could come around a blind corner and hit someone!

Cotton Valley is great for mixing up different loops with as much or as little climbing as you're up for. Spring Gut is nice and shady. Fun climb and downhill both ways. Start in Gallows Bay and finish with a lap or two around Altoona Lagoon's park, with the rest of the exercisers.

There are more options all the time around Scenic, especially East. Ask the guys at Freedom City Cycles in F'sted. They'll hook you up.

Jacks and Isaacs can be good. Tubeless tires help keep the 'kasha' from ruining your ride. The Nature Conservancy is working on a connector that will keep the trail off the beach, making for a sand-free loop.

The lighthouse?! Not really worth it. And Caledonia? Great hike, not to bike.

islandjoan, there are so many spots on my way to work, if someone were not careful could wipe out bikers and walkers. scares me so much.

I really wish there were more paths. this is especially true close to triathlon when they are out in force. and some of them seem to be begging you to hit them

Stop by Stamina Sports in Golden Rock (in the center where the CrossFit and Boxing Gym are located, across from the Charles Harwood Building) --- ask Tom about mountain biking trails.
Our regular roads are pretty close to mountain biking anyway! smiling
