Good day!

I'm trying to sell my car to my friend but our timing hasn't worked out. I'm flying out Monday and he works all day Monday. Any way for him to get a title if I just sign it over to him? Or is the notary required? Thank you

Since BMV isn't open today maybe a notary would be able to tell you what's required to transfer tittle.

The following process worked for me in Sept 2013, when I was the Seller. From my notes:

1) Seller needs existing title in hand. Get it from BMV if needed.

2) Buyer and Seller go to a notary public together and get the title notarized. The registration does not have to be filled out or notarized, even though it has a form on the back for signatures, witnesses and notarization.

3) Buyer goes to BMV (Buyer and/or Seller can do this, but Seller is going to let Buyer go alone)
Bring:
- Title, notarized
- Current registration, which Seller will provide (not filled in or notarized)
- Copies of IDs for buyer and seller (drivers licenses OK, not notarized. Seller will provide his copy to Buyer. Seller and Buyer are both VI license holders, and I don't know if it would matter if that were not the case.)
- New insurance paper (Buyer will provide)
- $40 fee

The current plates and inspection sticker (still good for a few more months) stay with the car. No need to bring the car to BMV, since inspection is not expired.

Afterwards, the Seller's insurance (Marshall & Sterling) wanted proof of transfer before they would drop the vehicle from the Seller's policy, so Buyer provided a copy of the new registration.

If you do not have the tittle you'll need to request and pay for one.
Your registration is not your title. Don't know how long this can take?

When I was ready to sell in Sept 2013, I got my title from BMV in 10 minutes, because I went in at the moment they opened, so there was no line. It was free because they'd never given me a title when I brought the vehicle into the territory in 2005.

For the car that I bought in 2013, they gave me a title upon purchase/registration.

Okay, I have clean title in hand, that wasn't my question, apologies. I'm trying to figure out how to sell my car to my friend while he is here and I am in the states.
