Hey there everybody,
I am a 21 year old Marine. I am coming up on the end of my enlistment in July. My wife and I are seriously considering relocating to either STX or STT. I have read as much as I could find about making the move down to the USVI. I am now looking for someone who has been in similar shoes as my wife and I that I can personally contact to talk to about the pros and cons about making this move so I can hear first hand rather than just reading about it. It would be much appreciated.

We weren't in the same situation when my wife and I moved. You're young with some time for adventure. If you don't have kids to worry about or anything else that would make it more complicated, I say just go for it.

We are both in our early 40s with a toddler. It wasn't a tough call under our situation. Subtract 20 years and what I know now, it would be a no brainier.

Fellow young person here. Don't do it unless you truly understand what you're doing. The vast majority of people our age have left the island, as there really isn't much to do as far as the party scene. Live your life--come here to vacation-- but don't move to a retirement community just yet. I've seen many people in your shoes come down for a few months and high tail it out of here. If you absolutely have to move, consider St. Thomas.

Marine, First of all, Thanks for serving! Second, I'm not going to "tell you what you should do"! except, don't listen to one person! gather the facts/stories and make your own choices. I'd be glad to talk to you about my experiences, good and bad. PM me and we can exchange numbers to chat.

monogram, you really should temper the rhetoric. Many young people from the island leave the island to pursue further education and the better opportunities available stateside. Likewise many people both young and old who move here stay for varying periods of time. As do many other longtime residents, I personally know scores (if not hundreds) of people of all ages who've stayed here anywhere from a weekend to decades and then moved on.

It's a transient society but your continual harping on it being a "retirement community" is really out there. In reality the opposite is true - most seniors on fixed incomes can't afford to live here and, when that time comes, they move stateside where their income goes a lot further and they have better access to medical care.

It rather sounds to me as though at this point in your young life you don't have the opportunity to move away, that many of your young friends have left or are planning to leave and you're feeling a little resentful. That's perfectly normal but do try and avoid throwing out glittering generalities which aren't supportable.

Au contraire--I went away to a top-ranked school, have a great job, and love my hometown. Still, if someone comes to a forum soliciting the truth, I'll give it to them. As a self-described "OldTart," you aren't the one consoling new twenty-somethings when they are crying their eyes out and miserable after 2 months on the island. I am. The insinuation that the youth are immune from the terrible aspects of Virgin Islands life (crime, corruption, lack of peers) is an incredibly prejudiced view.

And once again you're making a grossly false assumption. I did exactly that many, many times over many, many years up until four years ago. Goof grief, you just don't have the monopoly and singular insight you seem to think you have.

Monogram - it's not a prison. Feel free to leave at ANY time

Oh and there's a crazy fun party scene on STT. In fact I turn friends down three days a week - I'm 35 getting too for that S. Lol!!

What I wanted to add is that you're so young to be married (IMO) I will say that the island is a REAL relationship test. Unfortunately I only know one of my "couples" friends that moved here after us and are still together out of a dozen or so. I don't know why but some had vices - booze - drugs - cheating - whatever, these islands do seem to only enforce those tendencies of you have them.

Not leaving any time soon--love my hometown! I agree that STT is the bomb! It's just not for everyone lol.

Also, I'm not sure you can tie your friends breaking up to my hometown. Cheaters gon' cheat. Druggies gon' drug.
