My daughter and husband, both from here, have no intention of coming back here.

Sad. THey would have been productive members of the community, and would have made great role models for our troubled youth (education + marriage = better life).

My daughter just left for university. She said she'd never live here again.

Why is that? Why do we turn off our best and brightest assets/ our hope for the future?

And the point of this digression from original post is what, exactly?

I took exception to Wanderer's misrepresentation of age in the IT industry. It snowballed from there. But no fears. It's out of my system now. (Grabs Walmart greeter pinny and hobbles out the door).

Sadder that as I wrap up my affairs I will be leaving as well within the next 2 years. Family should stay close.

I don't think Walmart uses greeters much anymore, don't remember last time I saw one. Too expensive.

The greeters were moved away from the doors some 3 years ago, but now they are back close to the doors as "asset protection customer specialists":

I agree family should stay close. Growing up in very close family where the majority of the older relatives died, family is not as close as it used to be. They were the glue that held the family together. Such fond memories, but if you didn't show up to a family event, fiery tempers would surface, but I still miss it and my relatives that passed on.
Some of the younger generations don't get it, even though they were brought up in those same surroundings as me. Sad.

More levity on the subject of age and brains:

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

- Mark Twain

Haha. That's a good one. What Mark Twain meant, was quite obviously, not the mental development of his father, but the mental development of himself, from age 14 to age 21. It's just one of Mark Twain's good jokes.

What Mark Twain meant ...

Thanks SO much for explaining what he meant. I've no doubt that everyone reading this thread is overwhelmed at your generosity in sharing such insight. Now you must tell us who Mark Twain was so we can be better edjicated. big grin

I am surprised you don't know, given your extended tenure here. Mark Twain was a West Indian, and is well known in USVI for originating the expression, "A no wantin tongue mek cattle can't talk."

I work in Human Resources and when it comes down to it, if qualifications are matching I will go for the older worker. more dependable, and dedicated. Won't call in sick during Carnival, or any other party on the island.

Tenure? Maybe you should check the definition of the word.
