Hi,
Does anyone know if there are non-stop flights from any airport near NYC to STX? I can't find any so far and I will be traveling with pets so I don't want a connecting flight.

Not any direct flights to VI from NY that I'm aware of.
You may try for a non stop to Miami or PR, then on to STX.

Maybe not STX but I think you can find some to STT. Might be seasonal or not daily. I think American and Delta from JFK and United from Newark. Then check out the pet rules on the island hoppers.

Ok that sounds good. So the island hoppers would be seaplanes right?

Seaplane is probably your best bet and takes you into Christiansted.
Finding a taxi to take your dog, even in kennel, might be challenging.
Maybe STX peeps can chime in.

Taxis are required to take your securely crated pet. But you may have to strongly remind them of the rules. They can charge you $30 for a large crate and $20 for a small one.

Do you know if taxi's will take a medium sized dog out of a crate? Its just the crate is big. Its easier to take it apart to put it in the car. Or maybe are there car/van services i can set up in advance to pick us up? Like a private van?

What is your plan and final destination? You can pick up a rental car at the airport or at the seaplane terminal in STX. Even a one day car rental may very well be cheaper than taxi with pets.

Ok great I was going to rent a car anyway I just haven't put together how all this would work yet. Ok perfect I'll pick up a car rental at the airport then.

I don't have an exact address yet because I won't be booking an apt or house until next month.

I agree, the car rental is probably your best option. You have a better chance of seeing pigs fly than finding a taxi driver who will allow a loose dog. I had one give me an argument when I insisted my small dog ride on my lap - in her carrier. it was a soft carrier and he was trying to jam her in with the rest of the luggage in the back. Also, with a larger crate, you'd have to probably wait for a taxi that is not too full.

Centerline Car Rental has an office right at the base of the seaplane dock in Christiansted. I've done the Seabourne to STX and car rental from them several times, never had a problem.

Ok yes I think the plan is now to fly from NYC to STT and then take the Seaborn to STX and rent a large jeep or caravan or something to fit everything. Phew thanks for your help.

Make sure time of year you plan on flying allows transport of pets in cargo.
They don't allow any pets to travel in cargo during summer months. Depending
on temperatures, this can begin as early as May and continue thru end of October.
Don't forget to get all the veterinarian paperwork/shots, etc., 10 days prior to flight.
Good luck.

I don't know about other airlines but AA has a direct flight NYC STT, if you book in advance, it's $181 coach or $380 Business class. Here is what AA has for pets, they can fly in the cabin with you.

American Airlines accepts small cats and dogs in the cabin of the aircraft (no other animals are allowed). The fee for pets traveling in the cabin is $125 per carrier (each way), and the combined weight of the pet and carrier may not exceed 20 pounds. Pets must remain completely in the carrier with the door closed and under the seat during the entire time that the pet is in the aircraft. American Airlines does not accept pets in cabin to or from Hawaii, Transatlantic destinations, Bolivia, Chile, Uraguay, Argentina, and Venezuela. Passengers traveling with pets must check-in at the airline ticket counter. At this time, curbside or self-service check-in is not allowed. Please allow extra time beyond normal check-in guidelines.
For pets traveling in the cabin, the maximum size for pet carriers is 23" long x 13" wide x 9" high. Animals must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in the kennel. Soft-sided pet carriers are accepted as long as they are constructed of water-repellent, padded nylon with mesh ventilation on two or more sides. Also note that the pet carrier counts as either a passenger's one carry-on bag or personal item. For pets traveling in cargo, pets must have room to stand/turn around, sit and lie down in a natural position while in their carriers. Carriers must be constructed of wood, metal, plastic, similar material, leak-proof, escape proof and door must fasten securely and need ventilation on two sides in addition to the door. Carriers must also have a water container with outside access for filling, in case a delay occurs. Collapsible carriers (those which can fold down flat) can not be accepted due to the risk of collapse during transport. The maximum size for checked carriers is a series 500 kennel with the following dimensions: 40" long x 27" wide x 30" high. However, this size carrier is not accepted on the Boeing MD-80 (S80). Pet carriers in cargo on MD-80s must be able to fit through the cargo door while remaining in an upright position. MD-80 cargo doors are 29" high x 53" wide. Series 700 carriers are not allowed on any aircraft. The maximum weight of a checked pet and carrier (combined) cannot exceed 100 pounds.

Next month is March.
What's up with that?

Of course, we all want our animals to be safe when traveling but they sure make you jump thru the hoops to travel with pets.

It's actually a permanent ban not just here but all Delta flights. they can still be carried on in the cabin, that hasn't changed.

Yeah Delta had the worst record of all the airlines with checked pets so they finally decided just to stop taking them except in the cabin.

...or a sedated toxic-farting cat yowling and pissing freely. Can't have peanuts on the flight but cat hair; ok!

Many years ago I knew a man who worked for Delta, in the checked baggage area. They had a cat come through with a long layover. Well, for whatever reason, he and a fellow employee opened the cat's cage. The cat bolted!! They never did find the cat, but what they did do.....they scoured the area, even leaving the airport property, looking for that cat. With no luck, and time running out, they found a stray, scrounging for food, around a dumpster. They managed to grab the stray, put him in the crate and send him on his way.

They, obviously, feared for their jobs, cringing every time the phone rang for weeks. Amazingly, they never heard a word about it.
