Hi everyone !!
Planning a pre move visit. I want to narrow down my area to live in a condo complex near (20 miles) a VA clinic.
Any suggestions to get started?
Thanks! !

You'll have to live in PR.

My VA tells me there are facilities in USVI.
I'd rather drive my boat to PR than live there anyway.

There are VA clinics in the VI but the closest VA hospital is in PR. STX is only 28 miles long and 7 miles wide, twice the size of St Thomas but it rather puts into perspective your wanting to be within 20 miles of a clinic and makes it a bit of a moot point ...

On which island are you planning to do your PMV ?

On St. Croix the VA clinic is pretty much centrally located ...and the island is 28 miles long ( 7 at the widest point) , so OT's point is anywhere on island puts you less than 20 miles away .

Don, anywhere you live on St Thomas or St Croix will be within 20 miles of a VA Clinic, And we qualify for the Veteran's Choice program for x-rays, tests, and procedures not performed at the clinic. You may have to fly to PR for some consults or procedures, but VA pays transportation. I've only had to go there once in three years, and that was to re-assess my disability rating.

Ohhhhh. Ok, I got it. Sorry about that. I would love to live on Water Island. I'm kind of a recluse, lol. But after tons of emails back and forth with Realtors, it's more likely going to be StT. I'm going to come for a month or so and stay off the beaten path and go to the places I would frequent the most like shopping areas, grocery, restaurants, coffee shops.

Ideally a fully equipped condo association would be my first place. Then I may move later on and keep it for income property.

I've heard great stories of morning meeting's at some place in Coral Bay but that's pretty far away for me right now. Im retired but at 47 years old, I need to be on the move a little bit. I liked the idea of all that National Park area to roam around in.

I'm also a boater. So I will get around via the water to the other islands.

I have to see for myself I guess. I've about mold problems at certain elevations and higher crime problems on StX so I'm going to use a month or so to make the rounds.

Hoping to buy a place on my way out the door. Who knows, might not even go home at all.

STJ is more expensive to live and their lowest priced condo is $315K for a 1x1.
STJ has no marinas. Only certain places to anchor out and limited stays to 14 days a year on paid national park moorings. Easy enough to get back and forth to explore by boat from STT or take your car over for the day in the barge. Condos less expensive on STT, more to do, lots of options for shopping.

Yes..I believe you told me that this morning via email. I was doing some more research on medical and I have another post about this self insured thing you mentioned.
I wonder why I can't just add my own insurance?

I would think if the complex was severely damaged and they didn't have funds to repair, your insurance company would be out thousands of dollars on a condo that may never get rebuilt due to the other condos not having enough funds to repair them as well.

True. I don't want to live somewhere that I have paid cash and could be be gone tomorrow with everyone grabbing the cookie jar. Lol.
I'll stick to places that are insured.
Thanks!

I hope you're not planning on purchasing any real property here until you've lived here for at least a year. That wouldn't be at all smart.

No sir. I would purchase a condo or 2 sooner than later, but no mansion on the hill for at least 12 to 18 months. I've become a minimalist in my old age.(47)

All I need is coffee, my medication and my Dog and I can live anywhere with very little.
Who knows, I may decide that market isn't right for me.

The general advise is not to even purchase a condo until after living here for quite a while. Reason being is it can take quite a while to sell. Now if your loaded and can afford an extra house or two including all the usual fees, insurance, taxes,HOA etc, then not a problem.

I noticed they're hard to sell. Some are stale even. But no price drops. I would like one unit for an income property. They seem to do very well on Air BnB.
Not loaded but I do invest in real estate.
Thanks for looking out.

If you're retired and you're a recluse as you described... STX is the island for you. IMO you will not like STT if your a recluse. Its a very social island compared to here. This extrovert misses it.

The 20 miles made me laugh though. wink

Don't get me wrong. I like people (for the most part). But I mean, I'm moving to the Caribbean, to live on an island. These people can't be wrong so I'm willing to be an extrovert until or unless I get a reason not to.
Fresh start. I just always seem to have an exit strategy. For me and most people, that's their "home".
To be honest, I wanted StJ but it's totally out for now.
Keeping an open mind, I will be looking at StX too.

You say you miss it? Where are you now?

"All I need is coffee, my medication and my Dog and I can live anywhere with very little. "

On St Thomas, there are very few condo associations that allow dogs. Check into Seacliff Villas, perhaps. While there is a VA Clinic on St Thomas, I would suggest you check with them personally about what services they offer. I don't believe they are "full-service."

I don't think there are any condos on Water Island, but I am definitely not an expert on that.

My dog is prescription. I don't wanna get into any discussions about him though. The Laws on therapy dogs are pretty clear. Especially when prescribed by the VA.
