Monthly extermination

So in looking at some long term rentals I've seen this a couple of times "Monthly extermination included in rent". My question is, is this a red flag or the norm and what are they exterminating?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how normal it is to have extermination included in rental price, but they are going after the critters you don't want in your place. Cockroaches especially. This time of year the tree rats are really active (they seem to come with mango season). We had them eating through our screens last year.

Living in a tropical environment bug and critter free requires monthly extermination. So this is the norm. So seeing the phrase "monthly extermination" in your rental search is a good thing.. Ants of various kinds, Millipedes, Cockroaches, Centipedes, & Rats are examples of why you want an exterminator to do regular treatments.

Oddly enough you get sort of complacent about it. I used to walk around with cans of different raid in my back pocket. Other than centipedes I can pretty much smash anything with my fist now. I do have monthly exterminating service but some of those little creepy crawlers just don't get the memo.

If it is of bugs and critters, the tropics are full of them. I moved from a place where cockroaches were the size of small ponies. The ones here aren't too bad. wink But having regular, professional extermination is good.

It was the mention of tree rats gnawing through the window screens that put me over the top.

There are reinforcements that post people put over portions of their screens to keep them out. Also, make sure your fruit trees are not close to your house.

If you don't like bugs this is NOT the place for you lol! Only in the African bush have I seen more bugs per sq ft.

We have our house sprayed (inside only) once every 6 months, fire ants are a big problem near my house. I don't mind the rest of our bugs. Prefer not to sleep with centipedes lol. I love the palm sized huntsman spiders they eat the wood roaches.

Tree rats don't do anything, at least for me, they don't bother me at all. Get into the grill every once in a while and wake me up fighting sometimes. Never tried to get inside. Good size though.

So then I have another question. Is there any concern about having an indoor monthly extermination on the health of the occupants of said house? Does anyone ever speak to that?

We had them spray some "eco friendly" nonsense my wife insisted on because we have a toddler. I don't let him crawl under sinks, on window sills etc, so after that product failed miserably, I had them spray the good stuff and no roaches, ants, etc. we are also still alive

Centipedes just about unhinged me when I moved here. After one bit me it was even worse. I have lived here for 10 years and never become complacent about them. We spray once a month inside and out. Tree rats. No big deal.

Where do you live in FL that you're not used to bugs and/or monthly exterminating?

what are the exterminators using?
once a month sounds like a low residual.

Also what is the cost? Do they also provide a "bond" against termites?

I personally spray inside and outside at my house. Boric acid under cabinets and sinks, and threshholds works well. usually 2x/yr. Palmetto Bugs still like to come in anyways especially to avoid the heat outside. Also, sometimes get bugs from boxes used from Costco.

I'm in my 4th rental and 3 rentals had monthly exterminating. First rental was Terminex and all bugs were getting back active before our month was up. Second rental was a local company that we fired after double teaming me and stealing over 2K with of tools, my husband is a carpenter. Came back again after being fired and palmed my iPod sitting by the pool on their way out. Third was Terminex and though I loved our exterminator, we continued to had too many bugs.

Now, I do my own! I have multiple chemical sensitivities and can not breathe around Raid! I use Bengal spray once per month and never see bugs! My sick lungs do not have a reaction when I spray Bengal.

I've used professional exterminators a few times over the years but quickly discovered that managing the critters myself with predominantly non toxic means was much less expensive.

Treeman: Usually termite extermination is a separate issue and treated separately. Not sure what sort of guarantee they give.

May I ask does it make a difference where you live in reference to the amount of critters? I would seem that in the hills, rain forest etc, would bring it's challenges, does the beach also or is there a noticeable difference in what has to be battled? How about in town areas?

Thanks in advance.

There are bugs and critters everywhere throughout the islands and while there may be a larger population of individual species up in the mountains versus down by the sea and vice versa, it's six of one and half a dozen of the other. They're all a part of the system. The only ones I kill are roaches and mosquitoes. If you're really squirmy about bugs, living in the tropics isn't a good idea!

Well I'm definitely squirmy but everywhere has it's drawbacks. My goal for what is essentially an extended vacation (6 to 9 months) is to enjoy the experience and opportunity as much as I can and to find somewhere to live that can maximize that goal. Every piece of information i receive helps toward that
