Moving to STX

Hello everyone!
My wife and my dog and I are planning to move to STX in mid to late September. We have been doing alot of research on safety, where to live, and what to do for work. Fortunately, we wont have to get jobs immediately when we get there (we have saved up for some vacation time), but we will be looking for work and networking as soon as we arrive. I was wondering if someone could help us out with some links or references for short term housing (preferably dog friendly, but my dog is registered as an ESA animal). We would only need it for a short time while we look for a more perfect longer term place for us. We have an 80lb american pit bull terrier who is professionally trained and has been in training since we got him. He is also in training to become a service dog.

EDIT*** sorry I totally wrote the wrong information. We will be flying direct to STX.

I forgot to add that for living accommodations we initially are looking for something small and simple like a 1 bed or studio with or close to an area where my pup can run. I will be buying a car or suv quickly after we get to stx.

i just posted the link for the vi phone book on another post this morning. Pam at Coldwell Banker Gallows Bay is a good realtor.

Wondering why you are flying to STT and not to STX? you would have to fly at the moment. whether by commercial or charter, up to you. check the airline you will be using to make sure your dog is flyable. breed and temperature at time of flight. also make sure all shots are up to date and you have records stating that .

the ferry is not operational yet

We used Mike Foster at Coastal Air to transport our Rotties from SJU. I don't have his number anymore but you might be able to find it online. Very nice guy.

I wonder too why you're flying into STT and not directly to STX - and the advice about traveling with your dog is spot on. Even if the ferry is up and running by the time you make the move, no idea whether or not they plan on accepting animals on board. Good luck with your plans.

They probably cannot fly directly to STX because of the size of their dog. We had to fly ours in PR and then get Mike Foster to pick them up from there.

I forgot to add that you might try contacting Juanita on who posts here. She sometimes has apartments available.

Thank you guys for all the info. This is a great forum! My dog is an ESA animal which means that he rides in the cabin with me on all major airlines. We are probably flying American and he has flown with them before.

The two main things we need when touching down are accommodations and a rental car. I will contact Pam at Caldwell, but any pet friendly hotels or short term rentals that allow pets would be perfect for us to stay in for a bit while we look for our longer term place. Any info helps!

Thank you!!!

Check with Seabourne Seaplane.
They fly back and forth between STT and STX. Also between PR and STX which might save you the extra leg of journey from STT to STX.

Think you have the option of flying into Christiansted Habor on seaplane or
regular plane from STT into Rohlsen airport which is a good distance from Christiansted by rental car or taxi. Taxis can be funny (not in a good way)
about transporting dogs, in or out of a kennel, service dogs or not.
They don't want fur on seats, etc.

A rental car might be the better option and probably cost effective as they'll charge per person, for dog and luggage from airport.
Be sure to have your pup's paperwork.
I imagine dog will be traveling with you in cabin as they can't fly cargo due to temperature restrictions.
Airlines have breed restrictions on Pit Bulls.
Will they allow in cabin since dog is a service dog?

Good luck.

If your dog is flying in the cabin then you should be able to fly directly into St. Croix. That will save the cost of a private plane.

Rental car - Dennis at Judi of Croix is very accommodating and has reasonable rates. He also sells rental cars from time to time when you're ready to buy. (340) 773-2123

Villa Morales (restaurant) has no frills low cost guest house rooms for rent that might be a temporary option when you first arrive. You could also do a vacation rental condo, probably for less than typical hotel room and this would be short term with no lease.

Of course you will have to deal with the ESA and I don't know if the rules allowing them apply to private rentals.

I say this while watching a news blurb on the first airport with an indoor doggie bathroom for service animals in Milwaukeehappy
