I hope this is just a horrible rumor, but I heard DPNR fined them for the skateboard ramp and they will be closing?

I cannot find their website.

Does anyone know?

They were fined for not having a permit for the skateboard ramp. And had to take it down.

A couple of months ago they were given 30 days notice to move out by the property owner. Rumor was they were way behind on their rent. And are trying to make arrangements to catch up.

I'm not that old, but maybe I'm getting crotchety as I age about the internet in general. Why spread gossip and rumor about people online? Why not think about what impact your words have on very real people, living very real lives and trying to make a living. We live in a small community--is it really necessary if you know this information to take jabs at a fellow small business? Is it really necessary to fuel/propagate rumors? What ever happened to talking to people in person? Perhaps go on down to Freedom City, buy a drink or meal from the owners and ASK them. Or ask a mutual friend. Or do anything besides spreading rumors on the internet where stuff doesn't every truly get deleted, gets misconstrued, etc...

How many people will just read this thread or see it turn up in the search engines and think "oh, freedom city is closed" and then don't go there. Every customer counts for a lot of small businesses.

Empathy people, empathy!!

We stopped in there yesterday for drinks on our way home. Always a good view and good people there. Not one word about them closing was spoken.

Why spread gossip and rumor about people online?!

It wasn't a rumor or gossip. I read that in The Avis in an article about the skateboard ramp debacle. Additionally, it was discussed on Holland Redfield's radio show. This information is in the public domain.

Big Up Freedom City!!!

Great people, great food, awesome vibes!!!

I hope they continue to be a landmark out West! We always enjoy stopping by.

The Coconut Cup SUP event is great for the island and they do a bang up job every year hosting the event. Mishka played at this years event and his performance was top notch and left a lasting impression on me!

I miss the skateboard ramp. I would love to start an initiative to have a public skate park built somewhere out west (or anywhere on island really). It would be a great option for youths for another activity to do on their free time. Skateboarding has crossed all cultural and racial boundaries and is a very healthy sport for kids. It is athletic, encourages creativity, and creates an atmosphere where people are having fun and pushing each other to do better tricks.

Petition your STX senators, Matt T.
They're always saying they're receptive to getting kids off the streets and wanting to promote after school activities and looking for activities for tourism.

If any schools have a wood working shop, they could make skateboards as a project or another entity such as My Brother's Workshop could provide them to begin with to get interest going.

The government has lots of property not being used.
I'd contact O'Reilly, Positive and Sanes to start.

Not going to happen, unfortunately. Getting insurance on a skate park or facility is damn near impossible, even when all users have to waive liability.

Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I hear you about the liability insurance issues but other places manage to overcome this problem. Granted, we are living in the VI.

I remember making my own skateboard when I was about 10.
A flat piece of wood and roller skate wheels. Lots of scrapes and bruises.
I was in PR at the time as my older sister was having a baby and spent the summer there. Smoother roads and playground areas there.
Had to give it up when we came home. Dirt driveway!

there is a great outdoor skate park in lake havasu city arizona , the town also has a dog park and a couple of other parks.

maybe someone who is so inclined could look into how they deal with the zoning, permitting , planning and insurance and implement something similar

The government is self insured and rarely ever pays claims. I think their maximum stated liability by law is $7,000...if you can get a judgement.

Remember the recent story where they cancelled athletic events because of no insurance?

Besides, they only know how to tear down sporting venues. Maybe if we see a sign they can build one then people can have hope.

"Skate at your own risk" signs and signed liability waiver release forms are the norm for stateside skateparks, don't see why the same couldn't be done here.

I agree Matt, BUT people will sue and the case gets accepted regardless of what paper people sign. That is why the insurance in so high, if attainable at all.

I've been through this when we tried to establish an official motocross track on STX.
No matter what legal precautions were taken, insurance was unobtainable.

But how is it then that we have a drag strip? Same liabilities would apply, wouldn't they?

I was referring to a private operation on private property.

The drag strip is government property and the races are run by a private organization.
I suspect there is no insurance involved by either party.

Screw that, do it your self; you don't need some authority figure's ok to do good.

We didn't ask anyone before starting the horse rescue. We just did it.

I think you'll find the community is great out west and very supportive of stuff like that; I know a few engineers that would donate time to it & I have some contacts with construction companies that may be useful.

This island is just waiting for people with initiative.. it's the one thing we seem to be a bit lacking in.

I am working on a website for them wink

All false / rumors. Trust me, I've seen all the paperwork and I'm very close with Pi, whom I adore. They do need support right now with the lack of ships this year, like all the businesses in fsted. It's an awesome place with great food and a cant beat the view! They've been nothing but super nice to me and mine and I will 100% support them in any way possible.

As mentioned the best way to find out about what's happening is to check their facebook page. They do movie night once a week out on the patio and have live music pretty often too. Last weekend was a lot of fun. They also do a full moon SUP paddle and rent snorkel gear and SUP boards. They have a small shop with really awesome supplies like reef safe and natural sun screens, shirts and shorts and some sandals too. Recently Pi brought in this Acai bowl that was full of amazing tasting goodies! So addicted to that. Sold out so fast, hopefully they'll get it back in soon. They've had some hard blows, but damn they are some of the best people I've met in the VI!
