If I buy specialty plates (Historical Trust, Friends of the Park, etc.), will I also get charged for the Centennial plates anyway? And when you go for renewal,do you take your plates off immediately, or do they have you go get them after window #1 or 2 or something? Thanks.

Best to just call them, directly.

I don't see why they would charge you for centennial plates if you buy other specialty plates. You can't put both on your car.
However, dis does be de VI, mon so best check it out.
I've got to register my vehicle too so let us know what you discover.
Good luck.

I renewed my registration in May and i bought the Historical Society plates at Whim. At the BMV I took my new plates and my old plates to the window, and the put the new numbers on my registration. I paid my normal registration fee plus 5 bucks to have the new plate numbers put on my registration. Pretty simple actually.

I did this same thing last month with Veteran's plates.

STX ran out of "extortion" plates somewhere around July, August and stopped charging for a new plate and everyone after that only paid the standard registration fee and I think is still the same as up to today.

You can buy your own plate as long as it is approved by BMV. but you will be required I believe to pay a yearly fee to keep it active vs. the standard issue which is one time and done just yearly registration after that.

If they are now requiring plates if they have new ones again the person during inspection will remove them for you but not put them back on so have tools. You must have 2 plates or be prepared to have to get a notarized statement why not.

On another note I was in and out in just under 12 minutes from in the door to done renewing a drivers license this morning. Great service all around. big grin

I was there 5 days ago. Waited an hour and a half. Guess I went wrong time.

East Ender - St. Thomas' DMV was out of the new plates last month... but had them back in stock this month. Window 1 is checking for tickets I think... Window 2 takes the paperwork... and its there that they asked for the old plates and assigned new plates and logged what new plate number was being issued in a book. Everything (new registration/sticker/plates) was handed over at the Cashier Window once the new registration was ready and payment was made.

Update: I have never been at BMV when there wasn't a line, but there is always a first! It took 15 minutes including taking off the old plates and putting on the new. On the other hand, I was charged $27 for "personalized plates" and the entire cost was twice as much as last year. sad
