Food for thought

A study by a British think tank, Reform, says that 90% of British civil service workers have jobs so pointless, they could easily be replaced by robots, saving the government around $8 billion per year.

The study, published this week, says that robots are “more efficient” at collecting data, processing paperwork, and doing the routine tasks that now fall to low-level government employees.

Robots to collect data and process paper work? Last I knew only a computer was needed for that. And maybe a human to take all the physical paperwork, what's left of it nowadays, and run it through a scanner for a computer to process. Although that's easily automated as well and already is.

We're very quickly making ourselves obsolete. I often wonder, what are people in the future going to do for a living?

Just look arround and you will know. We be smokin some weed and make good vibes.

But here is the he rub. The jobless will need money. This is what Swiss tried to do in their country. Give every citizen $2000 per month regardless of income. Now this is more than enough to survive but hardly enough to live. They had a referendum and turned it down. Imagine this? People turned down free cash.

Design and build more robots and write more softwarebig grin

Even though automation has displaced many jobs it also creates high paying jobs in the robotics industry as well as installation and ongoing support, just not as many.

It's not true that robots don't get sick and never need a break as is often touted. Just not as often as humans and are more predictable. And may not need health insurance but rather a maintenance contract.

In the VI, most government workers SHOULD be replaced by robots.

"In the VI, most government workers SHOULD be replaced by robots.'

Many can be replaced by basic automation. But automation and efficiency means friend and family without jobs.

"In the VI, most government workers SHOULD be replaced by robots."

Many can be replaced by simple automation. But automation and streamlining processes means no jobs for friends and family.

Many should be terminated and paid half salary to stay home.

We went through this stage in my home country. Burocracy was overhauled. From total black hole it became transparent. While it is still complicated the average beurocrat was replaced by highly informed, educated, bilingual, polite, service oriented system navigator. It is a pleasure to work with them as they guide you through the process expertly.

government "jobs" are not jobs.

They add nothing to the economy.. they are a drain.. in the long term (less than a year) we are absolutely better off with out them, in the short term, there would be some adjustments.

The vast majority of people I work with could be replaced with automation.. in fact, I support and manage systems that have done just that in the past as an IT guy...

Yep! That'll really work with WAPA outages and the limited internet speed, the awful EVO boxes from Innovative. I was on phone with my sister in STJ earlier and WAPA went down. So did the phone line.
