in the late 90's, the St. Croix Radio Shack was in the top 5 in single store sales, worldwide. Jerry Smith was the manager. He got so fed up with how Corporate treated him/us, he quit and started Broadband VI with me.

Its a well known fact that Sears, who owns Kmart, is in dire financial condition.

[fortune.com]

Although the VI stores will likely be among the last to close (where else would they send the crap no one in America wants?), its really only a matter of time.

On the bright side, maybe Walmart will take their place since they have a strong presence in Puerto Rico with many retail stores and distribution already in place.

Sears is in tough shape right now and if they fold I doubt they will keep Kmart around and I also doubt anyone would be interested in buying it but who knows. I once heard that the Kmarts in the USVI are the most profitable ones. I believe if they do close someone will come in to fill that market.

Actually Kmart bought Sears back around 2002, but kept the name sears as they felt it was a more upscale name. Eddie Lambert has no clue what he is doing and Sears/Kmart will die a slow death. They continue to sell off assets, product names (craftsman is now licensed by black and decker I believe. They must be profitable as you have 2 on STX serving a population of 50,000. At one time I was a district manager for them and knew in 2005 it was time to get out. I worked for them for 17 years. Eddie wanted to make them upscale, but was still serving the 60+ population. The millennials don't want to shop there or sears in the states. They never upgraded their stores and can't compete on pricing or service anymore. 10 years from now, I feel that it will be gone as many others (Twin Fair, Two Guys, Hills, Caldor, etc.) and if Walmart is in PR, they will and could easily support these stores and probably provide better pricing. Quality is the same as most of the product is produced in the same factories.

There are no Target stores in Puerto Rico so its unlikely they would put one on St. Croix. They're still licking their wounds from the Canada debacle.

Sears got $525 million from Stanley Black & Decker once the deal closed, another $250 million at the end of the third year and a percentage of annual payments of new Craftsman sales for the next 15 years.

I'm pretty sure Diehard and Kenmore are for sale too.

These sales will keep them going for a year or two.

The CEO has created a real estate investment trust, you will see that he will eventually sell it all off, live off the brand payments and sales of the property.

Well I was going to bring up the Sears/Kmart thing on another thread but since we're already here.... It seems the Sears/Kmart demise is more a matter of when not if and then it will go down like the Titanic, profitable stores or not. It will be painful to lose our Kmarts on STX to say the least, much more than Radio Shack. Dare I say it, perhaps it would help if the VI Chamber of Commerce starts courting a viable replacement so perhaps we could at least minimize the lag time when it happens and we have plan B in place, Walmart or otherwise.

That would take being proactive rather then reactive. Can we handle that?

I haven't seen a K-Mart in Arkansas is years! The k-Mart stores run there were a nightmare to shop in anyway. I'd shop at WalMart any day over K-Mart. I get so frustrated shopping here at these two.

Arkansas is corporate headquarters for Walmart. Might have something to do with it.
