Anybody have any recommendations for auto insurance in the USVI? Apparently AAA, who has been my insurer forever doesn't do car insurance there and USAA, who was recommended by Blue Ocean Transport, apparently only provides car insurance to military folks.

Guardian works for me. My one beater car I pay like $275/yr for PLPD and my one nice car (wife's vehicle) is about $1100/yr for full coverage with $500 broad collision deductible.

Thanks for the leads, appreciate it and will follow up with them for rates.

Also, anybody had any experience with auto insurance through AARP there in the USVI?

AARP(Real Legacy Assurance in PR) for both vehicles and home.

They have beat all the others, price wise.

Was your parents ever in the military? My father in law was so we signed him up and then we could sign up. Now my daughter has signed up as well. Saved us all a lot of money.
USAA will work down ; father - son - grandson. But will not work up; son -father.

Oh, and I almost forgot to ask, did anybody use an insurance company who had your vehicle insured not just upon arrival in USVI, but the same company insuring it during your drive here in the States and while it was in transit from U.S. port to STT? Like, my AAA will insure my car from my home here in Michigan to the port, but not beyond that.

On St. John, St. John Insurance Company and PGU are the two big insurers. St. John Insurance is a bit more convenient because they have regular office hours. PGU has shorter hours. Once you get your bill of lading you can get insurance. In the past, I just email the documents to the insurance company and they get everything ready so I just have to go in and sign and give them a check.

When we lived there, we went with AARP(Real Legacy Assurance in PR).
They beat Marshall and Sterling for the same coverage by nearly $500 annually for one car.

Same was true for us - we had 2 cars and found AARP (Real Legacy Assurance in PR) easy to deal with.

Thanks, have now gotten quotes from AARP and Guardian, while AARP was slightly less, I kind of like the fact that Guardian is more local.

Do the standard auto insurance policies for VI cover hurricane damage or do they require additional specific coverage like dwelling insurance?

It's been six years now but we had Liberty Mutual in the US and they covered us for our vehicles in the USVI as well. Didn't get USAA until after returning to mainland so don't know if it would work there.
