You were lucky.
Marilyn hit on Sept 15.
No power from WAPA until a couple days before Christmas.
VITELCO/INNOVATIVE Phone service was back mid April.
NO cable TV for 2 years ?
Cell phones weren't wildly used in dem days.

Honestly don't remember. It was expensive and if you had to go to "call stations" that had phone service, that was was expensive and time consuming with long lines.
I know cell tower and internet went down with Ivan and Omar.

That's another thing: cell service was down after Omar in my location, north side, STT and when I made calls, I didn't think to check where my cellphone signal was coming from so got a whopping bill from AT&T because my phone picked up Tortola's tower.

I was able to explain the situation, after speaking with a manager and to have the fee waived. Just another thing to consider.

Basically, if you've never been through a major hurricane, you've honesty got no clue as to how much your life can be changed and how long it can take and stressful it can be.

Just read the 11pm NHC discussion and boy will it be close. Every update has it edging closer and closer to the VI.

STT Humane Society is packed up.
That probably goes for the shelters and rescue organizations on all of our islands. They don't have room for another single animal. With the impending storm, even more animals will get dumped on them and they simply don't have any room.

They need people to help them secure their shelters, food, water, supplies, extra kennels, volunteers and especially fosters so they don't have to euthanize perfectly adoptable animals.

If you have a neighbor that can use a helping hand, give it.

We were just plain tired after preparing for Luis and didn't prepare as much for Marilyn. I lost a lot on STX and WAPA was out until first of December!

I'm hoping we aren't in for the same scenario as '95!

Liquid read the 5am update discussion from the NHC they forecast that in 72 hours the center will be at 17.8 north and 60.6 west as a cat 4 at 140mph. Then at 96 hours it will be at 20 north and 66.0 west at 130mph cat 4.

I would say that is pretty darned close!!!!!!

You just never know that is so right! Google did hurricane Ivan hit Jamaica? It was forecast to hit them directly as a cat 5 and it veered almost at the last hour and just brushed them. I remember watching this happen in utter amazement as Ivan was one of the most fearsome cat 5s in recent history and they were spared.

This is a fantastic resource I found a couple days ago. I hate speghetti models - but this seems to take all those into account and average. Not looking good. And that last southward wind right before us is what worried me. A final push down to us? Oh man.

A lot of the damage in Marilyn was from tornadoes. Cars placed on top of walls, a telephone pole broken in three spots, a house destroyed while the neighbor's was untouched...That is where the "roof sucked off" and "couch sucked out" stories were born. It was a small, compact storm that rapidly intensified as it was south of us (St Thomas).

Well the 11am update in the NHC discussion called it: direct impacts also possible in VI and PR later this week. Next full update is at 5pm. Hurricane hunters flying out of Barnados to investigate.

THANK YOU Pammerjo !

Your suggested site www.tropicaltidbits.com is the BEST ! It has the most useful compendium of details and analysis I have seen in a long time. Particularly interesting is the segment from 5:55 to 6:45 of the video where he compares the projected location of Irma as it reaches the location of the USVI in successive consensus models. Wow !

I appreciate the suggestion, and also those of you that post the various spaghetti models.

You're very welcome. He explains it well for people (ie: me) who can't read a weather map!

I MAY have just cried a little reading the 11am NHC update. I feel fortunate to be leaving on Tuesday, but it will break my heart to leave this island and my home when she's in danger.

Monday may be the last day to get off island.
They've got to relocate planes and prepare the airport for a hurricane.

If your flight is early in the day and its a big plane to the states - you should be ok.

The regional airlines will be more problematic as mentioned by Alana.

Wind should not pick up until late on Tuesday.

I flew out of Barbados once on a big plane as hurricane winds were bearing down on the island. Got up and over without consequence.

Make sure you wrap electronics and important documents in plastic and place away from windows/doors before you leave - even if you have hurricane shutters. During Marilyn (though this may not be close to Marilyn), sailboats visited and masts damaged some of the condos near the yacht club. The only remains of a friend's boat was part of its mast stuck in a second floor condo's sliding glass door.

Park your car as far up from the water as possible and away from any guts.

As busy as the beach are today you'd never know there's a hurricane on it's way.
