Is there a gay community on St. Thomas/ St. John?
April 18, 2005 07:58PM
Are there any gay friendly places on the islands? while in st. croix i noticed quite a few. Do people have issues with gay people on St. Thomas/ St. John?

Funny story. I had a friend come visit us in STT who is gay and he saw all the rainbow stickers on the windows of shops in Charlotte. After a day or so, he said, "I don't think the stickers mean what I thought they meant" Apparently they are either an advertising symbol of some sort or some kind of sign that the store carries a certain type of gem. We don't really know, but at first my friend thought that the whole town was really gay friendly. smiling There is one bar that is somewhat considered to be a gay bar. I have only heard rumors, but my friend loved it here so much that he booked a second trip here already.

Those stores had predominatly gay owners and managers. Other's have followed suit as copy cats. Oh well. Soon they will all have the flag! Hopefully, they will also be gay friendly.

Teresa, the bar your friend was probably talking about is Tommie's off Main Street. Very gay-friendly and very fun. Would be my first stop if I was looking to connect with the STT gay community.

thanks for the information, we are are moving in september.
just wondering how people would react towards two gay women, or if they would not care. we have been to st. john before everyone we encountered didn't seem to care except one person who said why do you have a business in provincetown.
we actually made friends with people we are staying with until we find a place. its just nice to know sometimes there are others where you are moving.

Hello Kelly,

While the community as a whole in the VI is fairly "you do your thing and I will do mine" don't be surprised if you get negative looks, comments, derogatory statements hurled your way if you are being overly publically affectionate with your partner. Other than that I can't think of any other issues that would come up.

thank for the response. we are not the type of people to be pubically affectionate, i don't go broadcasting my sexuality but if i make friends i do not deny it. its nice to know people can just like others for who they are not who they sleep with. and not be judged for this.

I see what Islander is saying, but you know, I don't particularly care to see hetero couples all over each other in public either!

Tommy's Piano Bar (sorry if I'm misspelling) closed down some time ago. It was replaced by another (martini) bar- which I'm not sure is still open or not.

Best,

What a great idea. This is such an open community, and we all know WE are here, but there is no hub or social events for gay couples and/or singles. Being a middle aged single, and although it is not a huge thing, it would be nice to be around other gay or gay friendly men/women from time to time.

Kudos!

I'm not so sure alot of locals in STX are so accepting of the gay community here. Maybe it's just a small sector, but I remember a gay cruise docking here for a bit and there was a group protesting at a beach North of Dorsch Beach. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was just throwing that out there. They had an article about it in the paper. There were people complaining about the protesting though, so maybe it was just an isolated group.

I believe is was just a small group.

my experience is that there are very different segments of society on st x - some are extremely lifestyle tolerant but there is a very significant fundamentalist religous population who are not at all tolerant or educated about choice v.biological makeup. They usually stick to the dreaded teeth sucking and staring -I have not heard of any sexual orientation 'bashings'.

I have seen out & out prejudice against some gay friends on a couple of occassions on STX. They took it in stride (which I think gay people have lerned to do in many cases) but I felt that it was so humiliating and embarassing. Yes, I think most people 'turn a blind eye', but prejudices, remarks, looks, unfair housing - unfortunately it's all still here.

Thanks everyone for your honest input, it is helpful to those of us looking for a fun open minded place with great sun to visit...unfortunately, I think I will pass. I spent two days on St. Thomas about 8 years ago and admired the island for it's beauty but it just doesn't seem tolerant enough that I can be myself and have a good time. While I could anticipate wonderful sunny weather, the cold attitude would certainly be a turn off. I can spend my money elsewhere and have a better time!

In short, there are quite a few gay men or lesbian women here, mostly couples it seems (STX) and after over a year, the only time anyone has mentioned anything is that they don't care (usually coming from straight folks who just want to let me know that we are not in a "don't ask, don't tell, situation".

Soon there will be a website with various forums for people to plan to get together, meet for brunch or dinner, etc. It will be the first connectivity with people who are gay and islanders that I know of. If anyone wants to be kept abreast of the site development (someone else is doing it for a local business), I will let you know when I hear something.

Best wishes folks,

Dan

Rand,

I'm really sorry you feel the way that you do about visiting here. I think it's obvious from the posts that homosexuality here is regarded with a "laissez-faire" attitude by the majority.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say, "it just doesn't seem tolerant enough that I can be myself and have a good time."

If your druthers include walking around hand in hand while kissing and embracing your partner in public, then the Virgin Islands will displease you. When in Rome...?

My restaurant on STT is gay-friendly but that's never been an issue or a cause-celebre and the same is true of most restaurants and clubs in the territory. Gay-friendly or "don't give a damn," most of us work under the auspice of serving the customer. If the customer, whether he or she be hetero or homo makes melee of any kind which disturbs the amibiance of the place they're in then they're out.

Yes. there is a gay community on STT, STJ and STX and, yes, gays are generally accepted here both as visitors and transplants.

Again, I'm sorry that you're dismissing the VI as a vacation spot and I wish you all the best in finding a venue which will better suit you.

You were only here for two days eight years ago, so don't pass judgement so quickly! Cheers, dear!

I found that the triangle symbol is just telling you that they will take money from you even if you are gay. It's adversing and marketing efforts on their part BJ
