Live well, Laugh often, Love much....

April 26, 2006 04:46PM

Hello everyone,
I have been reading the posts and have received so much great information from all of you. I think you all are the most wonderful, open and kindhearted people for taking time to help and advise all of us "newbies"!
My PMV will be in Sept. as a female bartender(sorry I dont do any of the flair stuff- just great service and great drinks) and was actually wondering if I had that month correct to look for work at that time? I've read that season starts around Nov/Dec. Am I right on that?
Also, can you give me any info. on vollunteer work there(i.e beach clean-up, helping people, etc). Since this will be my new home and everone here has been so helpful, I want to make sure I do my part also.
Thank you all, Annii

September is perfect.

I would take as much time as you can to decide where to work. Once you are here for a few weeks you will quickly find out what places you'd like to work at and which places looked better during the light of day.

September is a good month to come down and check out places to live. Don't get into too much of a hurry to find a job during that month if you can help it. Many places are closed for a period of time during September or October. There will be plenty of jobs for you if you have any experience whatsoever. Right now, if you were to walk into some places and ask for a job, you'd be put to work immediatly.
I can't say I recall seeing any flair bartending down here, but then again, I don't get out very often. I work too much!

When you get on island let us know. My wife runs a wedding planning business and we are frequently looking for a bartender, server or just an extra hand. And if you do babysitting I might have a job for you too.

Good luck and you will have no problem whatsoever finding a job. But if you want to come down know you have even a better chance. All of the help is leaving now and places are desperate to fill in the empty slots.

Thank you all so much. StuScott, that sounds great. I will be looking to do some work for your wife when I settle in. I have worked many weddings and they were alot of fun.

Can anyone tell me if Sept. will be too expensive to find a small place to rent being so close to season?

Hello there! I am responding in an unusual way. I am disabled, and could not hold a tray if my life depended on it.

I did want to let you know that I arrived in September, 2005. I found that many of the restaurants and bars hire for the high season early, as great help is in great demand here. Just going out to eat, I was offered several jobs, the type of which you speak. Of course, I could not do them, but it seems that the time you plan on visiting is a pretty high recruitment time.

As always, I let new arrivals know that I do rent out a guest room until people have found how and where they want to live as well as where on the island they will be working. If this would be of any help, it is an inexpensive alternative while finding your 'niche' in this rather spread out industry of restaurants and bars.

Best wishes to you, and I hope my "job experience" is of some help to you.

If you would like to contact me, please just email me at My name is Dan.

Warm wishes again, keep on loving and laughing,

Which Island Annii?

I would also ask - Which island? When we arrived on St Croix, summer and early fall was a great time to find housing, but a terrible time to find work. Many people who did the hiring were not even 'on-island' for a month or two. St Thomas however is a bit different because of the high tourism. Good Luck in your adventure; I agree with an earlier posting; take your time and check around. Welcome.

Thank you all. This helps so very much. And Dan, I"ll email you regarding the guest room. Thanks again for your help.

I'm looking forward to being on STT. From what I've read it seems to be the highest in tourism there which I'm guessing would be the highest in job possibilities in my feild.

Hopefully I'm going in the right direction. Any thoughts?

Annii, hello!

I too am planning my PMV either in September or October and as coincidence would have it, would like to find a bartending position in STT. How long are you planning your stay? I'm not sure on the dates you have scheduled, but I am somewhat flexible with my dates. Just a few thougts that maybe if our schedules are similar, we could split the cost of lodging, rental car, etc. during our search. Let me know what you think.
