Can anyone give me some info on delivering a baby in St. Croix? How is the maternity unit? How are the doctors and nurses? How equiped are they for emergency situations? Is it similar to St. Thomas? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My wife is a NICU nurse at a Level 3 NICU here in the states and has visited the unit at Juan Luis Hospital on StX.
She said the staff was very friendly, the unit was nice, and the equipment was "the latest" fact, exactly the same kind they use at her hospital up here.

My impression of the hospital from a layman's point of view was favorable, if only because I was expecting something rundown. I've read other posts here complaining about some hospital employees and conditions on StX and STT, but for what it's worth, I've experienced the highs and lows of healthcare in some highly regarded hospitals up here. I guess it sometimes depends "who" you got, and "what" you got!

We were at a party with several traveling nurses from the baby unit. They all said that they thought the care of mothers and babies was great.
They were not saying this only because that was the department that they worked in. They said that there were units in the hospital that they would not want to work in because of the problems.

I delivered my son at JFL Hospital. I had an emergency c-section, and I must say that the doctors handle my emergency situation very well. I've been in L&D and Postpartum rooms in the main land already, though the rooms at JFL are not as elaborate, they are equally equipped. The experience I had with the doctors and nurses was very good. I felt like they went out of their way at times to accommodate me. In the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy I was back and forth at the Hospital, and the staff was very helpful all the time.

If you have anymore question feel free to ask.

My best friend delivered her baby almost a year ago at Juan Luis. She couldn't have been happier with the level of care and was happy with the experience. The day after she and her husband brought their daughter home, the baby started having jaundice issues--so they rushed back to the hospital. It turned out to be a billirubin protein problem common in premature babies. She had to be put under UV light in an incubator for a couple of days and was cured...anyway, the hospital's response was excellent so for emergency situations with babies, they are very good and the equipment was completely up to par...hope this helps...
