Carry on liquor
December 05, 2008 07:01PM
Does anyone know if you can carry liquor on airplanes as carry-on? I seem to remember airlines changing the liquids policy because so many travelers complained but I do not know where I read that. My guests would rather not check the liquor they want to take home. Also . .. would Cruzan arrange shipping a case?

believe it is against the law to ship..like with USPS...and no carry on in cabin unless they buy it in the terminal after security--not an option in stx

no you need to check it

You can't even bring sealed bottles of liquor through security. Fortunately, American Airlines doesn't charge or count it against your baggage allowance if you check it. I've checked liquor several times in those flimsy boxes you get from K-Mart or Cost-U-Less. The liquor has always made the connections without any breakage.

TSA stared the whole thing. It had nothing to do with the Airlines. If they minimize the amounts of liquids a person can bring on, they can reduce the chance of a binary chemical explosion. Two liquid chemical compounds being mixed to create an explosion,it does work.

I work at the airport in Charlotte and you can take mini bottles as long as they lay flat in a ziplock quart bag....that would be about 8...everything else has to be checked in baggage....

According to the gate agent at American Airlines in STX last month, you can take Cruzan Rum as carry-on as long as it's in the factory box carrier. Apparenly Donna Christianson (our rep to Congress) got it approved. Nothing else will get through. My wife had to put her single bottle of Cruzan in her checked bag.

You cannot take it as a carry on what donna christianston got approved was that they wouldnt charge you for the liqour like they do luggage when you check it, which was a huge boon to the local vendors here.

INTERESTING In San Juan, you are able to buy duty free liquor at the airport, and carry in on the plane in a tote bag provided by the vendor. The bag is "sealed" with a red tag... however every bottle can be removed and repacked without undoing the "red seal"... But the same airlines that allow this bag of booze on board will not allow the same quantity of liquor in the boxes provided here, on the same aircraft... so, duty free liquor is allowed on the aircraft from Ssan Juan to St Croix, but not from St Croix to San Juan... go figure... who is really making the rules??

I believe that is because duty free items are sold within the terminal, after security and so have already been through security. If you buy a bottle of water after passing security, you can take it on the plane with you. Same applies for liquor. The TSA just prevents liquids on board that have not been through a screening process.

Even if you buy alcohol in a duty free store you may have trouble with keeping it with you as a carry on if you have to transfer terminals at an airport along your route and are forced to leave and return through a security check point. You can't get it back past TSA even if you are just transferring flights.

I just returned from St Thomas on American Airlines, they allowed me to take 5 bottles in the regular store provided liquor box. I had 6 bottles (one was a VI Rum) The law says you can take six bottles but the AA ticket agent said AA only allows 5 bottles ,so she made me take one bottle out of the box and put it in my checked bag. Now the bottles were loose in the box and one of them broke during the handling,

You should be able to take six as long as one is Cruzan.

They Don't sell cruzan rum in PR after you go thru TSA to the secured area. In the secured area stores they will sell you five (5) Bottles to carried on your flight. When you leave STX you can have six bottles one being cruzan rum but all must be checked (no carry on). You can't take 151 Proof at all (carry on or checked).
