7 Species of Whale Have Been Found Mourning Their Dead
In oceans around the world, scientists have witnessed a rare and touching sight: whales clinging to dead members of their kin.

In a new study published recently in the Journal of Mammalogy, biologist Melissa Reggente from the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy collected observed data from unpublished reports of whale behavior and noticed that all seven of the species documented had been seen huddling close to their deceased companions.

The team of researchers (as well as outside experts) agree that these whales are mourning—an emotion that, in animals, is not unlike what we humans experience when we’ve lost a loved one. Scientists have noted this phenomenon in giraffes, elephants, and chimps, but had not yet confirmed the extent of this behavior in whale species.

Japan mercury-poisoning victims demand tests, 60 years later

Unfortunately, dolphins and pilot whales are also affected and infected by mercury while they continue the Taiji drives, ongoing now, to slaughter these cetaceans for meat and lives in captivity.

30 pilot whales were slaughtered just this morning.
The juveniles that were spared were dumped out to sea.

LIKE CHILDREN AWAITING THEIR MOTHERS – 30 HOURS OF TERROR
08 DECEMBER, 2016

Taiji, Day 1, 12-7-16: At 6:25 a.m. 11 boats went out hunting for dolphins, and by 11:00 a.m. they had found a pod. It took less than an hour for the unsuspecting dolphins, a large pod of approximately 40 pilot whales, to be netted into the cove. And even in hour number one, out of a total of 30 hours of terror, it was apparent how close and aware this pod was.

Juvenile pilot whales began to spyhop, trying to ascertain what was going on, while the larger adults, including the matriarch, or “pilot” circled the 15 young, in attempts to offer comfort and protection – two things which the young whales would soon be forever deprived of.

For the next several hours, Dolphin Project Cove Monitors witnessed these behaviors repeated over and over, and as the sun began to sink, so did our hearts, knowing the pod would be left alone overnight, scared, stressed and vulnerable to what awaited them the following day.

GOOD NEWS FOR WDC DOLPHIN HUNT CAMPAIGN
9 DECEMBER 2016 - 2:48PM

We have received another boost to our campaign to stop airlines transporting dolphins around the world and fueling the captivity industry.

Air India has joined the growing list of major airlines that have now confirmed to us that they will not carry live dolphins taken from cruel hunts in Japan on their aircraft.

Hunters kill hundreds of dolphins every year in brutal drive hunts in Taiji, Japan. Global demand for dolphins for ‘entertainment’ fuels this slaughter. Captive facilities select live dolphins from the bloody waters. These dolphins are then flown to theme parks in Japan, China and around the world.

In the last few months alone, 69 whales and dolphins have been ripped from their homes in the wild to be sold into appalling captivity for human amusement around the world,

Most airlines belong to one of three alliances. We want these associations to encourage their members to stop transporting dolphins. Airlines must stop carrying dolphins caught in drive hunts.

You can help - sign our petition now.

New year, new laws: Animal rights

Sami Gallegos, KXTV 11:01 AM. PST December 27, 2016

From saving hot dogs to banning orca breeding, animals rights advocates in the Golden State boasted big victories for the new year.

Orca breeding: SeaWorld San Diego ended its orca, or killer whale, breeding program in the spring, before falling under the state's ban starting in 2017. Also in the new year, the company said in a statement it will replace its killer whale shows with "educational orca encounters."

Hot cars: A Good Samaritan is cleared from civil or criminal liability for breaking a car window in order to rescue an animal that is showing signs of distress, given the car owner is not around and the Good Samaritan has first contacted authorities.

Boarding: The Pet Store Animal Care Act creates statewide standards required to be met for operating a pet boarding facility.

Shelters: It's illegal for a pound or shelter to sell or transfer an animal in its care to an animal dealer or research facility.

Euthanasia: The use of carbon dioxide to euthanize an animal is prohibited in California.

Dog-fighting: A dog taken from a dog-fighting ring operation, whose owner is convicted for felony dog fighting, will no longer be considered “vicious,” and thus, no longer automatically euthanized. Instead, these dogs will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Gotta love CA!

PRISONERS FOR PROFIT: LIVES STOLEN IN TAIJI
27 DECEMBER, 2016

“How much is that doggie in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie’s for sale.”

~ Lyrics by Bob Merrill, as sung by Patti Page, 1952

Thought by many Japanese to be the birthplace of Japan, this sleepy, little fishing village located at the base of the Katsuura mountain range has seen more than its share of horrors. And while we are reminded this is a spiritual place for both the Buddhist and Shinto religions, the dolphins who swim off the coast of Taiji are routinely subjected to anguish and horror. It’s a dichotomy that’s difficult to digest: on one hand, the Buddhist symbol for good luck has been placed in the nearby mountain top overlooking Taiji and yet on the other, it’s been marred by the visuals of black smoke and the bleak sounds of hunters banging on “banger” poles as dolphins are driven into the cove.

Tilikum is dead.
Cause of death: Captivity by SeaWorld.

RIP Tilly.
Thank you for bringing awareness to the plight of captive marine mammals.

Tilikum Dies at SeaWorld
By Anna Starostinetskaya | January 6, 2017

SeaWorld announced the death of the beloved 35-year-old captive whale days before the final orca show at the park's San Diego location.

Marine animal entertainment park SeaWorld announced this morning that beloved orca Tilikum has died. The 35-year-old whale—who SeaWorld believes died due to a persistent bacterial lung infection—was the subject of eye-opening 2013 documentary Blackfish which brought to light the mistreatment of marine animals at the park. Numerous animals, including Dart the Dolphin and Unna the orca whale, have recently succumbed to death inside SeaWorld’s tanks. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ Senior Vice President Lisa Lange issued a response to Tilikum’s tragic death. “SeaWorld needs to release all the remaining animals from its parks—the orcas, beluga whales, bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, walruses, [and] the other animals who remain in SeaWorld's tanks and exhibits,” Lange said. “Tilikum must be the last orca to die inside a SeaWorld amusement park.” While the park will still keep wild animals captive at their various locations, SeaWorld plans to hold the final “Ocean One” orca show in San Diego, CA on Sunday
