On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal about 50 miles from the nation's capital and largest city, Kathmandu. The quake destroyed homes, buildings and infrastructure. The death toll exceeds 5,000 and more than 10,000 are reported injured. Rescue teams predict that the number of causalities will increase as they are reach the surrounding remote villages.

Survivors are dealing with shortages of food and water while being forced to live in tents after their homes were destroyed. In fact, so many homes were destroyed that a government minister is requesting half a million tents from relief groups. Power outages and downed cellphone networks are impeding efforts to provide immediate relief. And aid groups remain concern about the potential spread of diseases.

We know the heart wrenching images of the damage will inspire many people to want to help and that relief charities will be mounting a response to provide food, clothing, hygiene items, medicine and temporary housing to assist with the immediate aftereffects of this disaster. At this point in time, the charities on our list have indicated that they plan to assist in the relief efforts in some way, have a 3 or 4 star Charity Navigator rating and allow donors to desginate their donation specifically for this disaster.

But before you give to one of these charities, first decide what you want your donation to accomplish and select the charity offering that specific type of aid. To do this, simply use Charity Navigator's website to view a charity's rating page. Once you are satisfied with its rating, then you can jump to the charity’s website to learn more about the type of assistance the charity is providing in relation to this disaster. For more tips on giving in times of crisis, please review our Tips for Giving in Times of Crisis here.

In the coming days, charities will continue to assess the situation to determine how best to provide assistance. Once they make their plans public, we will update the list of charities responding. If you represent a charity that is responding to this disaster, then please click here to find out how your organization can be included in this list.

If you wish to help the animals also devastated and in need:

Nepal Update: We are on the ground, helping animals in need
The stories coming from Nepal are devastating; people and animals are living in makeshift shelters. Both people and animals lie buried where they fell as stone and brick shelters collapsed on top of them.

"My village was devastated. People and animals were killed and many trapped inside buildings. We lost most of our animals. They had no chance as they were tethered or in shelters. People ran for their lives and had no time to free their animals. This is a tragedy for all of us." - Dinesh Gautman, Kavre district resident

As you read this, our Disaster Team is on the ground in the Kavre district (one of the most affected areas identified by the Nepali government) working day and night, saving suffering, hungry, and homeless animals.

Without your support, our veterinarians can't continue to save the lives of animals caught in disasters. Please give generously to our disaster relief fund. Thank you.

Nepal’s Animal Earthquake Victims Getting Help

Cherise Udell
May 10, 201

More than a week after the little Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal was struck by an earthquake so massive it shrunk Mt. Everest, people and animals are struggling to get back on their feet.

As international aid pours in for people, a smaller stream of aid is coming in for the nation’s animals affected by the tumbling quake. Many of these animals are livestock that the people’s fragile future depends on, others are stranded pets. Some are strays that no one otherwise would likely care for, yet they suffer, too.

Rahul Sehgal, one of the directors of Humane Society International, described the situation on the ground last week: “There is complete devastation in many areas for people and animals alike, and we’re helping both. For many people, their animals are all they have left, so HSI’s animal aid is a vital lifeline.”

According to the Humane Society International, most of the animals treated have sustained injuries from being trapped in collapsed buildings or hit by falling debris. Sadly, thousands of other animals have been crushed to death or buried alive in the disaster.

In Sengden Village, a remote village outside Kathmandu where 85 percent of the homes were toppled, people and animals are living day-to-day in makeshift tents. Sehgal describes a woman encountered by the HSI team, Mrs. Purnima Tamang, who is now all alone without family except for her flock of eight goats that she refuses to leave as they all shelter together in what remains of her home. ”Call them what you want,” Mrs. Tamang lamented to HSI staff, “my property, my family, my friends, they are all I have left.”

Her goats are suffering from shock and exposure, having been soaked by rain for five days after the earthquake, and so HSI veterinarians are treating their respiratory problems and will return to help Mrs. Tamang with medicine and food.

In every village HSI has visited so far they report “animals are getting sick from exposure in the heavy rain; many are too sick to eat, and most of the animal feed is buried in the rubble anyway. Complicating matters is that many of these villages are not easily reached as they are remote and reached only by mountainous dirt roads.”

Seghal, continued, ”these animals have already survived a large scale disaster and it would be heart-breaking to see them succumb to something as easily preventable as respiratory diseases. The humanitarian teams are vaccinating people and we’re working alongside them vaccinating animals. Everyone needs help here.”

Learn more about the situation at HSI or any of the other humanitarian aid organizations working on the ground in Nepal. If you have advanced training, consider volunteering your time and expertise on the ground in Nepal.
