We need your help to permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States. Please contact your members of Congress today.

Horses Need Your Voice, Please Speak Up Today

Urge your members of Congress to support the SAFE ACT

In the midst of the Triple Crown excitement, we can't lose sight of the horses who are not in the limelight. Each year approximately 150,000 American horses are trucked to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, where they are brutally slaughtered. This is a terrifying end for these animals, who often endure painful, repeated blows to the head before being dismembered—sometimes while still alive and conscious. Many are former racehorses and show ponies.

The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act is critical legislation being considered by your federal lawmakers in Washington, D.C., which would protect horses by prohibiting their slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. and banning their export for that purpose.

But until this ban is in place, every horse, even the one in the winner’s circle today, is just one bad sale away from the slaughterhouse.

What You Can Do

The cruel, unnecessary and predatory practice of horse slaughter can be stopped for good, but we need your help. Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today to quickly and easily contact your U.S. senators and representative and urge them to support and cosponsor the SAFE Act.

It is critical that your legislators hear from constituents like you in support of this bill. Even if you have contacted them before, please do so again.

Thank you, America, for being a voice for horses.

Horse meat should be available to eat. There should not be barbaric practices involved but to waste meat is ridiculous. Have had the opportunity to eat horse on many occasions in Mexico and we should never let a protein resource go to waste.

This won't save the life of one single horse. Horses not slaughtered for food in the US (a facility was scheduled to open in the US but it was stopped just before they planned to open) are sent to processing plants in Mexico. More US jobs exported.

So you don't give a crap about brutality and cruelty that they must endure.

"Each year approximately 150,000 American horses are trucked to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, where they are brutally slaughtered. This is a terrifying end for these animals, who often endure painful, repeated blows to the head before being dismembered—sometimes while still alive and conscious.

As for you, Sparty, that same reasoning should go for human meat, in that case. In your own words "we should never let a protein resource go to waste."

If you agree that it's perfectly fine to have any animal brutally slaughtered then just don't sign the petition but this is a"terrifying end for these animals, who often endure painful, repeated blows to the head before being dismembered—sometimes while still alive and conscious." Beyond cruel and inhumane.

Neither of you have any empathy.

I have much empathy. Did you read what I said? Animals are eaten. They should continue to be eaten. they should also have some dignity in their death. Have you ever slaughtered and butchered an animal? I have respect for every piece of delicious animal flesh I consume. I hate the "ist" words but I am a speciesist. I believe and will continue to believe man is more important than animals.

Give it a rest, Sparty. Either sign the petition or don't.
I posted it for persons that might actually care about these horses.

It would be grossly hypocritical of me to be outraged over horses when I am contemplating a large steak for supper.

Are the petitions binding? Or is it just to make you feel warm and fuzzy? If it is binding I'll sign a petition, if not I'm already warm and fuzzy enough

The petitions from thousands and often hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world all help sway the idiot bureaucrats that make policy. Sign it.

I'm not doing this to make myself feel good. I'm doing it to help change policy when it comes to this and other things that matter, are cruel and inhumane and can be changed with the help of us all.

Since the petition also wants to stop the export for slaughter, and hundreds of thousands want this, then each person that signs should get a horse for life to care for.

150,000 horses a year will need a new home after all. Caring is sharing.

The thought of any animals being slaughtered is repugnant to me but I also realize that my sentiments are totally and utterly hypocritical as long as I continue to eat meat. For personal sentimental reasons I don't eat veal, horsemeat, rabbit, venison or foie gras - but am a hypocrtite nonetheless.

I would rather see money spent on continued oversight and improvements in the humane slaughter of animals than the sort of legislation proposed by the SAFE act.

Is it right to treat any animals this way?

"They are brutally slaughtered. This is a terrifying end for these animals, who often endure painful, repeated blows to the head before being dismembered—sometimes while still alive and conscious."

If I thought for one second a deer, a horse, a cow, a dolphin, a cricket.. Any member of the animal kingdom would give 2 $hits about me i may care more. Nature is cruel. Nature hates you. Nature would kill you in a second. There is no need for barbaric practices though in the 21st century. The problem is, what is a humane way to kill something to eat it? It is not a moral dilemma I take lightly. I am grateful and feel blessed for every animal I'm fortunate enough to eat.

Good grief! Why so constantly adversarial when the post was about signing a petition (or not, in your case) to help save horses from brutality and cruelty? I'm done here with you.

I have said I agree that we need to do better with respect to all animals we eat, then you claimed I lack empathy.

If a humane way to kill horses for food was used (that seems to be the issue - the method), would you be OK with using them as a food source?

The problem with the proposed SAFE Act is that it doesn't address the root issues. This article undramatically and unemotionally documents the history of the horse as a source of human food and provides up to date information on current legislation:

If there are indeed slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico which are guilty of the inhumane treatment described then it seems more logical to (a) work with authorities in those countries to ensure that their facilities are better equipped to both transport and slaughter the animals humanely and (b) look more carefully into repealing the US laws forbidding horsemeat for human consumption while concomitantly enacting legislation to ensure that US slaughterhouses are properly designed to handle horses under specific licenses.
