The point still is starting a career in substantial debt is not a good thing.

I think you'll see a bifurcation in college education. An accreditation path - MOOC's (like MRU, Harvard, UofC). These will be the next centuries trade schools and a degree path for STEM, MBA's for executives and what ever the real rich want for their kids

YMMV

Whatever is best for the plutocrats

Because it makes so much sense for the majority of those in college to end up $100-200M in debt.

It's similar to the German model you were lauding.

I was not lauding any model. It is ridiculous to expect taxpayers to pay for you college as much as it is ridiculous to end up so far in debt. College isn't for everyone. For sure. I don't have the answer but it isn't what we are doing now

and if you google it, you will find ( in addition to what dougtami said ) there are free colleges in the US. you just need to do your research.

Most people who go to college now don't pay full tuition. The folks that are complaining are the one's who decided to go to for Masters or Doctorates. I don't see why the tax payer should pay for someone's decision to go for a masters or doctorate especially when they should know or should have known that what ever they majored in wouldn't get them a job to pay enough to pay off their student loans like studying the whales or turtles or American Lit or some such nonsense as this just because they wanted to be professional students and not have to work for a living.

My daughter went to public school and then went to local junior college to get her nursing degree (Bachelors). She received scholorships to cover about 60% of her tuition, the rest was covered by money that we put aside for her. She got out of college making $25.00 an hour. She then applied for a tech job at the hospital and the hospital paid for her masters degree. She's now making $76,000.00 a year and NO COLLEGE DEBT. She is now up for a promotion that pays $90,000.00 a year and a benefits package which covers 100% of her health insurance paid.

But when kids want that live on campus college experience either at a state college or an Ivy college then that cost should be on them and not the tax payer.

A lot of kids shouldn't be wasting the time or money going to college in the first place. They should be directed to a trade or the local fast food restaurant.

My wife enrolled both daughters in community college while in high school to see if they could handle college work. They both had AA degrees at 16 as a junior in high school, both entered state university in CA, and completed 4yrs degrees in no less than 2 1/2 yrs. Saved us a bunch of money and did this with no loans or student debt of any kind. You can get college educated and not be heavily laden with debt, just have to look and be prepared.

Let's see. I graduated high school with a 3.6, scored 30 on my ACT's and I got $250/semester scholarship. Couldn't get Pell Grant because family made too much (apparently) and parents had 3 kids in college at once. Your story is not the norm. Mine is. I didn't know JUCO's offered bachelor degrees? I don't think even "Everything for Free Bernie" is proposing free room and board. That should be on the student. Tuition is the biggest cost.

Tuition is not always the biggest cost anymore. My daughter was looking at a state university here in NY about 2 months ago and the room and board was more than the tuition. It was even higher than the out of state tuition cost. I was shocked because when I was there about 30 years ago, it was like half of the tuition. I've also seen schools advertise ie. 50,000 for the year, but give everyone these pseudo scholarships that brings the cost down to 15,000. I'm not sure why they do it, most be some type of reporting thing with the government that they have to give out so much in scholarships. Fuzzy math if you ask me.

Anyways, college is to expensive, the system is broken when we have professors making 6 digits and teaching one class. Instead of holding the tax payer accountable, let's hold the school administration accountable.

I only lived in dorms 1 semester, then got an house with friends. Was way cheaper than tuition that way. Keggers paid for entire rent a few months, who said you don't learn anything in college.

Off campus is definitely better and cheaper than the dorms, and way more fun... Maybe to much fun. big grin Hope my daughter doesn't read this.

This is exactly what we are doing with our son. He is only 12 right now but we also expose him to free online college classes. He loves it.

Yes, Lake Sumter Community College does offer Bachelor degree programs sponsored through UCF (University of Central Florida) specifically for the nursing program. No room and board, we lived within 15 miles of the campus. No, mine isn't an abnormal story, as long as your not looking for that partying living away from home college experience. But that is what you are looking for then YOU should pay the bill. Listen to what the Dems are saying about free college tuition " free tuition for PUBLIC Colleges" this is the same thing that Obama has said, that there shouldn't be any fees for community colleges just like regular public schools. I agree with this if it's possible and I believe it is, IF the Illegals are shipped back to their perspective countries. Illegals right now pay nothing for FREE health care, FREE education, Next to nothing for room and board. When you add up millions to this dole, the cost would be in the trillions.

There is nothing wrong with the immigration system, all they need to do is ENFORCE the laws on the books just like they did back in the early 80's before those stupid republicans from giving amnesty to millions of illegals. We used to me included because it was part of my job would round up and deport illegals in Florida after the oranges were finished. Then the next year the same batch would be back working again and we would round them up again, lease a Greyhound bus and transport them to Brownsville Texas and then off the bus and across the border they would go.

We actually had to fire 10 employees when I first took over at my job in MI. Out of 12. Either expired green cards or none to begin with. Im sure they are still in States working somewhere else.
