Volunteering

One of the things I would like to do, here in my new home, is to volunteer some of my time to help kids learn to read: something I have enjoyed all my life.

My name and phone number was supposedly being passed to the Social Studies teacher (Dr. something), who either has such a program in existence and needs volunteers or is planning to start one.

Since I have not heard from her, I thought I would trust the humble knowledge of all of you who have steered me so right up till now. Any ideas?

Hello Paul,

Contact Enid Baa Library - find out if they have any reading programs you could volunteer in; its a public library in Charlotte Amalie. Also ask about any book or reading programs they have. There was a program at the hospital as well, I recall hearing about, where people would come in for 1 or 2 hours and read to and with the children that were waiting to be vacinated or examined at the clinic. I don't have information on this however. You could also contact the librarians at the public schools and inquire of them directly about coming in for an hour or so... or maybe an after school program. Get a phone book and look in the government pages under education and find the list of public schoools and call -ask for the librarians name and see about contacting them. I don't have any specific contacts but hope the suggestions will bring you some leads for the very great volunteer service you want to provide!!

The program at the hospital has lapsed. But the Friends of the St Thomas Libraries have other programs, including a long standing attempt to open a new library in Tutu and a Saturday program at the library. Have you gone to one of the local schools and talked to the principal? Also Head Start (call Special Education to find out how and where).
