Homeschoolers - Affordable Private School Options?

Good Evening!

Our family recently moved to STX and includes 3 school aged kids. We naively thought that we could put the kids in public school - how bad could it be? The more I've read and learned from talking with locals, the more I believe that either private school or homeschool are our two only options.

Good Hope Country Day is totally out of our price range because of the cost - sending three kids there would be impossible for us. To my knowledge that is the only non-parochial school on the island. Our family isn't religious, we do however openly discuss different religions and cultures and are open to all people. My husband and I were both raised in strict Baptist homes and have steered clear of that with our children. I think most of the Parochial schools require that you be of that religion, which is the case back home - don't know about here.

I wish there was an affordable private school option that didn't involve religion. Is there a homeschool group on the island? I would consider homeschooling if the kids could be active with others.

I have read through these forums many times, I'm just hoping to get some feedback, any options that I have seen or what am I missing?

We too are looking for a good school option for our daughter. We will be moving to STX in 1-2 years to the East end. Wondering which High schools are good and affordable and not across the island.
In my experience religious schools don't always require you to go to their church but they do charge more for non-parishioners... at least in the states they do. My daughter has attended parochial school for 5 years now.

We are also contemplating a move to St. Croix. I already homeschool my kids and will do so on the island and am looking for other homeschoolers!

We decided to go with St. Patrick (K-8) and St. Joseph (9-12). We felt comfortable with the people at both schools and that's worth so much!

Hopefully it all goes well - we are hopeful for a lot of things right now!

Good evening!

warriorsschool@yahoo.com is the email address for our Christian private school, Bruce Institute of Higher Learning, but it is also used for all things school related.  In this case, that means a family does not have to enroll their child in our school in order to be apart of  the homeschool associations that we have, although I hope they will happy
Our private school has a homeschool co-op / umbrella division that I'm expanding here to the beautiful island of St. Croix! Our homeschool organization here is called St Croix Home Educators' Association (SCHEA).  It will provide valuable information regarding homeschooling in the Virgin Islands such as:

1.) what parents must legally do in order to homeschool or have their child homeschooled,

2.) updates on what the Homeschool Legal Defense Association is doing to prevent to Virgin Islands Dept of Education from passing laws that violate the rights of parents to have freedom of choice pertaining to the education of their children,

3.)which local private schools are "homeschool friendly" meaning they offer online or campus classes and extracurricular classses / sports for area homeschool students,

4.) as well as members-only events, like field trips, classes, sports tryouts like soccer, cheerleading, dance, basketball, etc, clubs such as SADD and FCA to name a few, and events like graduations, proms, and banquets.

And much more!

Also, if any family is interested in speaking with me regarding enrolling their child in our program for us to homeschool them, they certainly may shoot me an email. In addition to having campuses, it is also possible to "attend" our school totally online, and we are accredited!  I am also offering a hybrid program here on island that combines our online classes with traditional textbook studies as well, which has proven highly succesful for our students in the states.

Well, homeschooling will be a challenge...and three children? I am a veteran elementary school teacher (26 years completed!!), and I am going to open a homeschooling business by January. That is my target date. ...and by the way, our local board of education will have discussions about our new home education policy this month since they just printed the draft on their website.

This rules don't seem that complicated, but from what I heard from the new commissioner of education, she wants the home education policy enforced and for homeschooling parents to be able to use the same federal and local resources that the public school students are using. One of the requirements besides filling out the request form is to have it approved (of course) and to have a portfolio that is to be reviewed twice a year or "semi-annually.

The business I plan to start is educational consulting service so I will be planning your homeschooling day, planing some assignments, working with you on some educational websites, tutoring your child, and helping you to build a portfolio that will show how your child is making progress. For people in St. Croix, I will work with your on Skype and the cost will be less that what I will charge for St. Thomas residents since I live on St. Thomas.

Cost $180 a month. This includes 2 hours of face-to-face academic planning/instruction per week, assessments and 1 hour online/on phone support (questions). Half price for additional children. It is $50 an hour consultation if you do not want "the package" deal.

St. Croix residents will get the same thing but for $110 instead.

Good morning,
Are there support groups, homeschool groups for activities/field trips?
My family of 6 will be moving in Aug and will be homeschooling my 8 and 5 year old. Meeting other kids or island groups their age will be great. We chose the K12 International online program. We are enrolling her to start Monday on the Mass K12 while we are still stateside so it's less of a transition when we move. I'm just looking into STX homeschooling threads now. If you know any updated ones, please post a link.
Thanks!
Hollie

We are planning our move for June and are looking at the possibility of homeschooling our 9 and 6 year old. I would love to also hear any feedback.

In my research, it looks like there used to be a group that had a blog that listed field trips and other events but the most recent update to that was 2012.

Any insight from those who are currently homeschooling would be appreciated. Especially with the new Homeschooling Bill that is being passed in USVI.

Thanks!

Hi Hollie,

We are thinking of enrolling our son in the K12 Online School as well when we move to St. Croix 2018. He'll be going into the 8th grade. How was the transition for your kids moving and then taking classes online? Are they adjusting well? Were you able to find homeschool groups/sports/etc.?

Thanks!

Of course, we all want the best for our children, especially education. For our children, we always chose the best in this regard. And I can say that we often studied at home with the BuyEssay.org tutors. And I'm happy because they are really quite good specialists and just nice people.
