Summer Enrichment Program & Scholarships

Hi All-

I’ve seen some questions on this board about educational opportunities and extra-curricular activities for V.I. students (particularly home schoolers), so I thought I’d post this information. Hope it’s of value…

Virgin Islands High School students are encouraged to apply for admission to the 2007 Junior Statesmen Summer School, a challenging and dynamic month-long program for academically talented Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. Summer School students take exciting college level courses in Government and Speech, debate controversial topics in nightly Congressional simulations, meet and question government leaders in a high level speakers program, and develop and polish their leadership skills. The program is held on the campuses of four of America’s most prestigious universities: Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.; Yale University in New Haven, CT; Stanford University, near San Francisco, CA; and Princeton University, in New Jersey.

The U.S. Department of the Interior will award four scholarships (two for full tuition and two for half tuition) to the top applicants in the territory. These scholarships also cover round-trip airfare to the program. Students who do not receive DOI funding will be able to apply for local scholarships provided by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands and other local organizations. Fundraising groups will also be formed on both islands to coordinate and support the students’ fundraising efforts.

The Department of the Interior has sponsored and supported Junior Statesmen’s efforts to recruit students from U.S. Insular areas for over 15 years. Almost 100 students from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Marianas Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia attend the program each year. More than two hundred Virgin Islanders (including me) have participated in the program since 1991, with fifteen students attending last year.

Interested students and parents can attend informational meetings which will be held at all of the territory’s high schools over the next two weeks. I’ll also be discussing the Junior Statesmen program this evening on Talk2 at 8:30 PM, so please take a look. If you’re interested, or have any questions, please contact me at 714-6640 or

Thanks for the post. I've heard a little bit about the program in passing, but the interview on Talk2 (I only caught the first half) really opened my eyes. The scholarship from Interior doesn't hurt either. I just imagine how much better off we'd be if our government "leaders" had gotten this kind of training when they were in school. Maybe you can covince your collegues to start an Adult school?

Can you tell us when you'll be visiting the schools?
