Re: WAPA and the rate increase - 5 years ago
JE, you're right. I remember in '08 watching the rate increases to a point in one month I hit a high of $650.00 in electric for the 1,000 square ft. condo I was renting... Freakin' OUCH! While our decision to leave STT was made not too long ago, seeing the LEAC increase just confirms to us we're getting out of here at the right time. STT and the rest of the USVI can be a great place to liby Effone - General/Relocating

Hi saucey, The Warpia unit Jim Dandy mentioned works well for me. I got mine via Walmart.com. Just an added note to make sure your data plan is sufficient to cover the usage, otherwise your ISP bill could surprise you... Regards.by Effone - General/Relocating
Hi swans, Checked it out last night and it was spectacular watching the flight path between the clouds. Will be on the balcony tonight to check it out again! Many regards!by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Customer Service - 6 years ago
Hi MillsC and welcome to the Board and STT! "Customer Service" is a misnomer here. I also felt the same way when I arrived. It seems until your face becomes known by the people you encounter you'll be treated as not really being a permanent resident. And when you become "known", the customer experience will generally improve, but will overall still lag far behind what yoby Effone - General/Relocating

Re: car insurance on stt/stj? - 6 years ago
QuoteInnAtPelicanHeights I have not been told by one person living in the VI USAA rates and coverage saved them monies. Good luck I was able to increase my coverage and cut my premium by about half by moving from a local insurance company to USAA. If someone is eligible for USAA, they need to seriously consider them when comparing insurance rates. The USAA app for Android and Iphone is alby Effone - General/Relocating
Re: STT WAPA - 6 years ago
Apparently Unit #23 went down yesterday AM and took the day to bring it back up, so rolling blackouts prevailed. You may want to subscribe to VITEMA as they posted alerts thorugh out the day. At first they we a bit slow in coming, but now they arrive almost real-time to an incident (WAPA, traffic problems, etc.).by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Car Insurance in the VI - 7 years ago
I just went with USAA. Applied for the coverage and received the documents completely on-line. Saved over half of what local insurers charge. If USAA isn't an option, perhaps AARP would work, if you're of age. "Thank you" to everyone who's a Vet!by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Bike commuting/ bike repair - 7 years ago
Alot of broken double-track and going either up or down hill. It prepared me pretty well for a race I did in Costa Rica, though. BTW, if you have your bike shipped to you once you arrive, it should be around $100, if in a bike box.by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Bike commuting/ bike repair - 7 years ago
Hi honiscb, I'm a mountain biker here and stay off the roads as much as possible. However, depending on where you live in relation to UVI (and I imagine you'll be looking for a place close to the university) the road tends to be wider on the more congested main drag to UVI, with more room for error/mindlessness/idiocy on the part of all "participants", and straighter. Re: Mountain Bike?? - 7 years ago
Hello. I'd have to agree STJ isn't the place to ride. I'm on STT and live in an area where I was able to come up with a route consisting of a mix of pavement, gravel and broken doubletrack. It's easy to go from STJ to STT so you may want to still bring it down. I was without my bike the first year here and gained 50 pounds (thank goodness when I was able to ride again)!by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: AT&T GoPhone Roaming - 7 years ago
Hi Edward, A friend of mine uses his GoPhone here with no problems (voice and text). You may want to call AT&T to make sure you'd have no issues, though, just to make sure. Regards.by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Mechanic recommendation wanted - 7 years ago
I've had great experiences with Dr. A's Auto Repair. Aron Roach is the owner. He's behind Community Automotive in Tutu, in front of the tire store. 514.1079. Regards.by Effone - General/Relocating
Lately I've been pouring a bit of cheap Gin or Vodka on a paper towel and wipe the exposed areas. Works great in reducing mosquito and no-see-um bites. The odor goes away quickly (as far as I, and others can tell). Plus it's cheaper and not greasy (compared to bug sprays). Okay, now I'm preparing for the jokes to follow...by Effone - General/Relocating
Re: Elite Bicyle Mechanic NEEDED ASAP - 8 years ago
Hi mrl38, Between the shifters (not knowing what "problems" you're having) and the rear der not lining up, it sounds like the cable has stretched or slipped a little from the fixing bolt. My advice is to turn the barrel adjuster(s) at the shifter (and leading to the der if you have one there, too) all the way in (clockwise as you're looking at the cable enter the shifter/der), thenby Effone - General/Relocating
Cameron, I had an '05 Cooper S convertible I also thought about shipping down. After being here for awhile, I sold it before bringing it. I truly loved that car, and realized between the roads (bottoming out), the parking (the inevitable dents and dings), the service (there is no warranty work available - I even considered shipping it to Puerto Rico if/when it needed something), the constant saby Effone - General/Relocating

Re: Sailboat living - 11 years ago
Hi Wayne, Having sailed around the VIs (and now living here), it's best to fish away from reefs and coral beds (e.g. open/deep waters) due to the risk of a nerve toxin (I forgot the name) present in many "near shore" fish. It'll apparently ruin your day, or days, depending. Moorings typically run about $25.00 per night, with limited-use (3 hours), day only moorings available for frby Effone - General/Relocating
