Re: Hola from Panama - 20 days ago
Well, after living in the Grenadines for 3 years and then on STX for 7 years, we moved to Uruguay. We have travelled all over S.A and C.A. and this had the best standard of living and great year round climate. We live one block from the beach in the middle of park and have an historic home here at a FRACTION of the cost of the Caribbean. Taxes are nearly nothing and the beef, vegetablesby gonetropo - General/Relocating

Re: Force10 Homes Performance - St. John? - 6 months ago
Thanks Julie for the update. We were curious to see how they fared since this would have been the worst storm since many of them were constructed. Would you know if David is still on island?by gonetropo - General/Relocating

Force10 Homes Performance - St. John? - 7 months ago
Does anyone know how the Force10 Homes that David Holzman/Innovative Builders constructed on St. John performed in Irma? We discussed building with David back in the early 90's on a property we owned in Upper Estate Carolina on Majestic Mile. We then sold the property and built a home of coral block in the Grenadines but I always wanted to build a Force10 home as a cottage in the Grenadinesby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Auto Insurance - 7 months ago
When we lived there, we went with AARP(Real Legacy Assurance in PR). They beat Marshall and Sterling for the same coverage by nearly $500 annually for one car.by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Force 10 - 1 year ago
In our opinion, it is difficult to own a home on any island. St. John has a few additional issues as it is more remote, difficult to get there and also hard to obtain the daily things you need. Plus, real estate is now expensive and the cost of living is expensive. And if you are financing, insurance is very expensive. It is beautiful but you pay for that in the long run. Re: Force 10 - 1 year ago
Back in 1992, we purchased a beautiful property on St. John and seriously considered building a Force10 home. The concept is solid and we had completed extensive research on the product. We ended up selling the property and building a villa in the Grenadines but we would seriously consider this as a cost effective method for building a home in the Caribbean. I would recommend that you try Pat Brannon. When we lived on STX, I had him do some construction and pool work for us. He was prompt, fair and did an outstanding job. Try contacting him at dbrannon51@yahoo.com.by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: WAPA out yet again - 2 years ago
Rotorhead, that's one of the reasons we are here and no longer there! 360 days to the day and not one power nor internet outage and no damaged equipment. We don't have to have Duke Power nor ATT in our speed dial anymore. Life is cooler but so much better!by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Auto Insurance Company? - 2 years ago
Agree, when we lived there we had our car insurance through Legacy on PR and it was exactly 1/2 for better coverage. They have a local adjuster on STX so if you have a problem or accident, no worries.by gonetropo - General/Relocating

Re: Moving to the States? - 2 years ago
Moved back in January and everything went extremely smoothly. We shipped all of our books/CD/DVD's via USPS Media rate. Did all the shipment online and just dropped off the boxes (18 of them) at the Post Office in Richmond. It can take 6-8 weeks to get to the destination as they don't ship until they have a full container. We then packed about 17 boxes with 'stuff' and shipped them USPS Pby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Good dog food options - 2 years ago
Bred and showed dogs for a number of years. Have 3 now. Feed them either Merrick or Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. When we lived on STX, we shipped it in and sometimes were able to acquire it at Superior Pet on NSR. Would not think of feeding any of the commercial dog foods as they have little nutrition. Sure, your dog will live on it but would you feed filler to your children?by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Good dog food options - 2 years ago
Just take a look at an impartial report of the best food for your dog. Do you see Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Pedigree......anywhere in the list. NO, because they are the WORST dog foods on the market.by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: WAPA out on STX? - 3 years ago
QuoteAlana33 I'll be sure to let my niece know she's having more outages than she thinks! Alana, now that's funny. Fact, we have lived in several places around the world and the electrical power situation in the VI, and I only can attest to STX and STJ is atrocious. In the 6 years we were there, they fried two computer power supplies, one gate circuit board, one washing machine circuit boby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: WAPA out on STX? - 3 years ago
QuoteTommySTX I find it so fascinating the amount that people complain about WAPA and the electrical outages. We live on a tropical island and that's just par for the course no matter the island. I understand it's frustrating at times but living on a tropical island does come at a cost. Sit back and enjoy the day free from worries! Total crap! Re: Today's Avis headline re: HOVENSA - 3 years ago
IMO, I would look elsewhere to move. The economy is DISMAL on STX and has no signs of being revived in the near future. Optimism does not fix the serious issues that the islands face. Also, the hospital may likely be one of the worst places to take employment at. Have you read the news at all regarding the hospital. There is little development, skimpy tourism, high unemployment, high goveby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Best Realtor to Sell your USVI house - 3 years ago
Kim showed both of our homes more than anyone else and they were not listed with her. She ended up selling one of them in November. She was with Sothebys at the time and was with them at the closing in January. Did she move to another broker?by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Best Realtor to Sell your USVI house - 3 years ago
QuoteAlana33 There are a limited number of buyers on our islands. STX seems to have more sales due to their prices being lower than on STT, STJ and WI, with STJ and WI prices being higher than STT. Realtors generally will send their prospective buyers MLS reports and other info on properties that are within their price range. It is up to a buyer to decide what they wish to view. Re: Best Realtor to Sell your USVI house - 3 years ago
We recently sold our place on STX and here is our experience. When we purchased the homes, we located them and then called a friend who is a realtor, obtained as much information as we could and made our offer. When we sold, we listed with a realtor based on who we thought would provide us with the most visibility. We need good advertising and a very good web presence to showcase theby gonetropo - General/Relocating

Re: WVGN Radio gone - sold - 3 years ago
And what source did you acquire that information from because it is totally wrong! PBS and NPR got $445 million from the government in 2012—or about 0.014 percent of the federal budget. it's worth noting that the government doesn't actually give money directly to PBS or NPR. Instead, Congress funds the Corporation on Public Broadcasting, which in turn divvies up the money according to formby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Island Life, A Perspective from Past Residents - 3 years ago
We appreciate the kind words! Like everything in life, some decisions are more difficult than others and deciding to relocate from St. Croix was one of them. We remain dismayed at the fleeing of many of our friends and the closing of so many businesses. We do hope for the best for the island and the residents. Island Life, A Perspective from Past Residents - 3 years ago
We have recently moved from St. Croix but thought someone who has the dream to live in the Caribbean may benefit our post-island living perspective. After travelling the world and living in many exciting places, we always desired to live in the Caribbean. Now, most people would describe island living as 'paradise' but after 10 years of it, many inherit a different perspective, us included.by gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Does anyone have a driveway made from tailings? - 3 years ago
When we had a summer home in Canada years ago, we had a 1 mile long private road that was gravel and a mess in the spring. We all chipped in (no pun intended) to have the road 'stone chipped'. They came and sprayed tar on the gravel and then dumped small crushed gravel on it and repeated it 3 times. They then rolled it with a steamroller and that was it. It was done 12 years ago and lookby gonetropo - General/Relocating
Re: Roof Recoating Recommendation (STX) - 3 years ago
Curious, why do you NEED it sprayed on? Heavy roller coating seems to do a better job IMO. You can try Kevin Moran at Clear Water Cisterns and Roofing. Not sure if he would use your product but give him a try. I would also recommend a silicone product for the rain catchment area on the lower tiers if you do not have gutters. In fact, I would do the entire roof with it but it costs abouby gonetropo - General/Relocating
