Re: How's the healthcare in STX? - 5 years ago
When I was admitted for three days after emergency surgery a few years back, I found the care I received was generally quite good. The nursing staff was attentive and I really was impressed after hearing a lot of horror stories. The facilities are old and a new hospital in order but most staff do thier best with limited resources. It was only after the injured gang member in the room across fromby vicanuck - General/Relocating
Re: Which community? - 5 years ago
I live in the east in a community near the south shore called Union & Mt. Washington. I love my area and we have great neighbors. Its generally quiet and the homes are well kept by middle class working folks of all races. We dont have a community association or gates, but everyone is repsectful and people get along. I have no regrets about buying in this area.by vicanuck - General/Relocating

Re: Break ins - 5 years ago
Thieves have been prowling through GallowsBay at night too. They shut the power off at Computer Solutions over the weekend presumably kill the alarm to break in but couldnt get inside. This sort of crime will escalate considerably in the coming weeks and months. Be prepared...lock your buildings and homes down securely. I went to the gun shop the other day to see about getting a weapon.by vicanuck - General/Relocating
Re: Taxes that are a Drag on the Economy - 5 years ago
I'd definitely be in favor of a Sales Tax versus the Gross Receipts tax and much much higher taxes on alcohol and tabacco. As far as Property Taxes go, I've only paid that once in the 5 years I've owned my home. Lets not change that!!!by vicanuck - General/Relocating
Re: need opinions and advice on a pool - 5 years ago
I would recommend designing your pool with a vinyl liner. We get 150+ minor earth quakes per month and those little tremblors really do affect the concrete. A vinyl liner will protect your investment even if minor cracks in the cement occur. Salt water clorination and a solar powered DC pool pump are a must unless your rich.by vicanuck - General/Relocating

Re: US Postal Shippers Beware! - 5 years ago
If the IRB cant verify whats in a package, how will they know if the payment sent is correct? Anyone can fabricate an invoice for anything. If there is no tracking number on the Excise Tax form they send, how can they follow up if they dont recieve a payment? Perhaps theyre gonna just HOPE folks send a few dollars, kinda like a charity! If they ever got it together to try to collect on these,by vicanuck - General/Relocating

Re: US Postal Shippers Beware! - 5 years ago
Louis the Mailman confirms IRB personnel are on-site at Richmond "selecting" which parcel recipients to tax. Is this unfair taxation? They send letters with barely any identifying information about the package. There is no reference number on the letter sent, meaning that months down the line, they can come back and demand payment again since they have no system in place to trackby vicanuck - General/Relocating
US Postal Shippers Beware! - 5 years ago
For those of you who receive shipments from the mainland via US Postal Service, the IRB has begun sending out letters to recipients requesting the Excise Tax owed on the merchandise received. This has never happened in the 8 years I've lived here so this represents a new 4% (default rate) tax on all incoming goods. I'm not certain if they are sending these requests only to businesses or if indiviby vicanuck - General/Relocating
Late Night Muggings at Gov't Lot in C'Sted - 6 years ago
They're at it again! Just a quick note to advise you late night clubbers that the muggers are out working downtown and the Government Parking Lot in Christiansted. A young female leaving Davey Jones Locker was apparently followed to the Government Parking Lot late last night/early this morning. The mugger actually got into her car and demanded she drive him somewhere. When she refused, he bashedby vicanuck - General/Relocating

Re: 14 days until the big move from NYC to STX. - 7 years ago
Health cards are easily obtained from the Charles Harwood Health Center. They only take one visit to get but the hours are funny...9-11 and 1-3 I think. You'll need to have a stool sample checked at a local lab. Bring the report and your SS card. Cost is minimal.by vicanuck - General/Relocating
