Re: Maria's winds - 6 months ago
QuoteMatt T I think it goes without saying but I'll say it anyways. The farther west you go on St. Croix, the worse the damage. .... I haven't been out to F'sted but I hear its quite bad there. Just wanted to state the obvious. yeah..99 mph winds maybe at 10pm and 4am.. but in between it was far faster.. My solar panels are rated to 140mph and I lost 4 of them off my roof. QuoteScubadoo Were the horses outside during the storm or in the barn? They were outside in the storm, we don't have a structure large enough to safely house 36 horses... just a small rescue We don't have any goats, our pigs did fine, so did the dogs and cats.by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

Re: AT&T East End STX Out? - 6 months ago
Quotevicanuck There was never military at the ATT tower site even once. Not our mission to protect private property, if the governor would have been smart and categorized cell service as "critical infrastructure" things would have been different, but as it is that's like expecting us to come guard YOUR generator (lots of civilians missing generators right now) instead of handing out fby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

Re: Power out East - 6 months ago
I've seen crews out, but I've not seen a single new pole yet (I'm pretty far from Wapa's generators out west though, so I assume they are starting from the source and working out). 90% by Christmas hopefully isn't a super optimistic number.by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

Quotermb2830 but if the solar is set up with net metering, (and as I recall that is how it was set up), it does not operate when wapa is not working Yep.. Re: Finally some news! - 6 months ago
QuoteScubadoo The curfew for St. Croix is now 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m., which means St. Croix residents now have between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to conduct their business. ST. CROIX CURFEW NOW 6:00 P.M. TO 11:00 A.M. Why it's not 9am to 6pm like it is in STT.... I R CONFUSED! I'll take more store time though, maybe I can find a pressure tank tomorrow.by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

Re: lpg gas generator vs diesel generator - 6 months ago
QuoteJE I have a 20KW Generac propane generator,,,, a bottle will last 18 to 20 hours. A 100 pound propane bottle cost $86, so the average running cost is about $4.50/hour I have a 6k generator (peek 7k), runs everything I need, a 20lb bottle lasts me ~8 hours... I think you over sized your generator (a 20lb tank costs about $25 or less, so $3.125/hour for me; still not as efficient as dieby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

Re: South West St Croix looks worse than Hugo - 6 months ago
QuoteScubadoo That may be one way. Regardless I imagine it will take much longer to trench/bore for underground lines and set pad mounted transformers than to string poles So do both, and transition the lines as the trenches and ground based transformers are completed. we got that sweet sweet state of emergency money now!by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: South West St Croix looks worse than Hugo - 6 months ago
QuotePdmargie Again, the question is, do you spend the money now to bury the lines or keep spending money to repair/replace the above ground lines? at least bury the main feeder lines, then maybe work your way out over time? that alone would help a lot when restoring power.by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: South West St Croix looks worse than Hugo - 6 months ago
QuoteGumbo Liquid, all of us appreciate your part in the recovery effort. unfortunately it feels like I've done more with my chain and truck in the past few days than I've done to help at work (on the way back from lunch I towed a guy that broke fuel line on a downed tree, pulled many tree's out of the road and even a couple old ladies out of ditches).. but it's a bit chaotic up here and I'm sby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: South West St Croix looks worse than Hugo - 6 months ago
QuoteGumbo At least your airport is functional, so the entire VI isn't cut off from help Unfortunately it's only as functional as yours is. They are both damaged in similar ways, but the military can use either because we don't require tower support to land, or even working runways... haha. (though the runways are mostly fine on both islands). There's a LOT of government assets here, it's aby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
South West St Croix looks worse than Hugo - 7 months ago
I'm glad most of the island didn't get hit like the south west corner did, lots of roofs gone and it seems like 1/4th of the trees were knocked down (the rest lost branches, leafs and even bark). I hope all the west end types are ok, I drove around a bit yesterday and it's a nightmare of fallen trees/power poles and demolished houses. I lost a small part of my roof, 6 solar panels and 1/3by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating

QuoteMaynard Just curious, what percentage of people on STX carry hurricane/windstorm insurance? I think it's mandatory for home owners.by LiquidFluoride - Under a Coconut Tree
Re: Finally some news! - 7 months ago
South west corner of the island (where I live) looks exactly like Hugo pictures and video... F'sted got hit pretty hard, I saw rocks that were easily 200+lbs washed up over the storm wall. driving is dangerous, lots and lots of wires crisscrossing the roads (night driving is far worse).by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: Maria is a Cat 5 - 7 months ago
That was a crazy storm,, I'm on the south west end of the island and it looks like hugo... there are tree's with bark that was stripped off the winds were so strong. Hope everyone made it safe, us and the horses made it fine (just some damage to the house, and almost every tree knocked down)....by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: Checking in - 7 months ago
Luckily Maria's hurricane force winds only extend about 30 miles from the center, so I imagine STT and STJ will get the same experience STX did with Irma, just some winds, but I bet there will be a significant more amount of rain. Hopefully no one from STJ is hiding on STX.. forecasts aren't looking great for STX, she needs to go about 30 miles south (or more!).by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: Best way to give donations - 7 months ago
Quotespeee1dy Animal shelters are getting animals off island too they need help Some animals can't be gotten off island, I'm going through round 2 of hurricane-horse-hiding. we are mostly self funded via tourism, dunno if that's going to be an option for a while, the beaches were already hit hard from irma & the rain forest lost it's canopy; maria is going to make it a bit worse I thinkby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: What is the "REAL" Situation on STT & STJ - 7 months ago
QuoteScubadoo I expect the military is evacuating both islands, not the residents. Just pulling back until after the storm, there's nothing we can do untll after, no point in staying to become someone who needs assistance. we have a ton of assets already here, it could be worse.by LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
Re: Hurricane Maria - TD 15 - 7 months ago
well, at least my procrastination paid off; According to : QuoteResults for St.Croix (17.7N, 64.8W): The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.5N, 65.0W or about 19.8 miles (31.9 km) from your location. The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at that location is in about 1 day, 12 hours and 44 minutes from now (Wednesday, September 20 at 7:06AMby LiquidFluoride - General/Relocating
