Re: Car rentals - 5 months ago
Yeah, I was thinking even just carpooling would leave some for us on the island, but I have checked dates as far away as Dec 11 at both Olympic & Budget & found nothing.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Car rentals - 5 months ago
Now that all the rental cars on the STX are taken by FEMA, Red Cross, etc.I am remembering that I have heard rumors about tiny companies. Does anyone know how to reach them?by kakalee - General/Relocating
cell service - 5 months ago
Any scuttlebutt on which cell companies & handsets are working best in the aftermath? Mine is pitiful & customer service at ATT tortured me til I lost my connection.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Cell phone service advice - 1 year ago
Do you know where you will be living? Some areas have no cell service at all. ATT is generally accepted as better than Sprint, but I have seen a friend calling me from the parking lot of my condo on her Att phone & not get through because only Sprint works here.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Best broadband st croix - 1 year ago
When I had Choice & was living dangerously close to their tower my streaming was pitiful. When I moved away from the tower it got worse. I looked into VI broadband & they sent a tech out who said that the fact that we had computers in 2 different rooms & concrete walls their service might not be better but they could offer us a trial to see if it was better. That seemed like a lot ofby kakalee - General/Relocating

Re: Spacious Breezy Apartment - 1 year ago
This one is probably larger than my husband, cat & I need, but please let me know if you have something anywhere on STX with a pool or beach.by kakalee - USVI Classifieds

If it is OK to have a cat there, I would like to know how large the complex is(number of units)by kakalee - USVI Classifieds
Re: "One-Stop" Grocery Shopping on St. Croix - 2 years ago
Why not post your list? I could say some things that are better priced at one store or another, but they might not be the things you want.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Best single piece of advice for new resident moving from mainland? - 2 years ago
Think about normal daily needs & if you you can't bring those things with you, ask now about where to get them here. I say this because normal places to get info (like the net or this forum) may not be as readily available here. For instance I might have asked "Where on STX do I get bicycle parts?" & it might not have taken 2 days to replace a broken spoke.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: online shopping with Free shipping to STX - 2 years ago
Here's something I never found before. While Christmas shopping on amazon a button popped up saying "free 1 month trial of amazon prime". I thought how much easier it would be to choose an item & not have to group it with something else to reach the $35 mark. As a bonus they have some movies I can't stream from netflix. The gifts I bought were going stateside, so I don't know if shiby kakalee - General/Relocating
Pelican Cove? - 2 years ago
A neighbor who has been here way longer than I said something I just can't wrap my head around & I don't think it is just because I am not the most logical person on STX. He said Pelican Cove was good swimming. Is that even possible when it is in the condo row poop water zone?by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Scam vs realistic - 2 years ago
There is another scam indicator I have found on craigslist besides the heat thing. Even with pictures and rent that is only a tad low, as soon as the return post to your inquiry touches on something like missionary work or a pregnant daughter- some reason the owner can't actually be there, but don't worry financial arrangements can be made.... Re: Land line, Majic Jack, any other ideas? - 2 years ago
I checked amazon & was a bit creeped out by all the fine print on some of the signal boosters. If I can get enough signal to spend 20 min talking to ATT I will try to see if the 1 I have in mind gets their approval. Meanwhile more info from anyone who has had success would be helpful.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Land line, Majic Jack, any other ideas? - 2 years ago
Thanks Bombi, What internet connection are you using with it. I have choice & it can be slow, so maybe I would need to switch for good Majick jack qualityby kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Land line, Majic Jack, any other ideas? - 2 years ago
Thanks everyone, I know our Radio Shack is dying, so first I will check if they are dead yet, then see what att has to offer. I was surprised to find that a friend I talk with all the time in Idaho is on voip, but I'm guessing I might need to upgrade to the priciest internet on VI for it to work here, If anyone is using it successfully here I'd love the details.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Land line, Majic Jack, any other ideas? - 2 years ago
I got an ATT cel just before coming to STX & now that my contract is up I need to make a change. Oddly, when I looked at this condo I had 3 bars & now that I have moved in only 1 or 2, enough to text but calls run from awful to impossible. Friends with Sprint who also live in Vista Mar say their service is OK, but only in some areas. So far I have not found 1 of those areas, so I startedby kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Moving to STX in two weeks and need a room for rent - 2 years ago
The studio my husband, cat & I got for our 1st week here is out because of the dog. Another difficulty was that a week was too short a time for choosing a more permanent place, hence 2 years later we are still in a condo that covered the basics, but just barely. I expect a sizable mountain of $$ could make the whole process quicker & easier. Many of the hosts at airbnb.com are quite helpfby kakalee - USVI Classifieds
Re: Sunset dinner cruise STT - 2 years ago
A facebook friend shared "Lyric- a sailing music venue" I saw dates for the opening sail from STT but can't find it now. It sounds really unique & might be worth doing a search for.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: Cheapest car rental - 2 years ago
Thanks everyone. I will see how I feel about Budget on the island, as they have a terrible record on the mainland & Olympic is right in the neighborhood & we can pick her up at the airport & allow her a bit of stress free time to learn to drive on the left. But if anyone has a good or bad experience with a company, or a fantastic price story please let me know.by kakalee - General/Relocating
Cheapest car rental - 2 years ago
I have a guest arriving soon & searched for the best car rental price. So far it looks like Olympic at $185 a week for a super compact. Anyone know a better deal?by kakalee - General/Relocating
Re: A whole year to get a job? - 2 years ago
What is your usual line of work & how far off of it are you willing to veer just to survive? STT appears to have an economy but STX does not. I have known people who got lucky pounding the pavement, & others who just needed to waste money on new shoes. I have not met anyone who found work through the Dept. of Labor, but don't rule it out if you have a skill that is needed there. Desperatby kakalee - General/Relocating

Re: temporary place to stay on St Croix until permanent housing is found - 2 years ago
Hey, if you have the luxury of over planning more power to you. We did not & Duane Hammond at Peter's Farm Condo was a huge help in getting us acquainted with STX so that we found a place within a week. If a search for roosterfish doesn't turn up a link to the ad here, he also lists on airbnb or you can call him at 340 277 5910 to find out how to see his pics, prices & availability. Re: temporary place to stay on St Croix until permanent housing is found - 2 years ago
Check this site for an owner called roosterfish. He is a really helpful guy if he has a condo open for your dates & if a studio is big enough for you. Otherwise try airbnb.com. If all else fails & you decide a 1 bedroom with a postage stamp kitchen & bathroom is OK if it has a pool, the complex I live in usually can do a weekly, but I took it in desperation & prefer the other alteby kakalee - General/Relocating
