Re: Charter Schools-Home School Groups - 11 years ago
I have in-laws who just enrolled their three children in an on-line charter school, ages 12 to 8 years old. My sister-in-law has been home-schooling them for 6 years or so, and has shopped and purchased many home school curriculums. She is amazed at the extremely high quality of the K12 program, and the reasonable price. This on-line charter school provides all books AND computer equipment. Sinceby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Treehouse on StT, StJ, StC - 11 years ago
You might consider that St Croix is the most rural and largest of the USVI islands. You might find it useful to see what the owners have done with Mt. Victory camping and cabin retreat in the rainforest area of the West End of St Croix. Good luck. Sounds very interesting. -- Joannaby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: West End STX Hotel? - 11 years ago
If you want to save lots of money by doing your own cooking, consider these two, both in the same neighborhood at or near Dorsch Beach and the Sandy Point wildlife sanctuary, south of the town of Frederiksted: Cottages by the Sea has an extensive website www.caribbeancottages.com/ You can see immediately on line whether the apartments at Sugar Hill are available for when you will arrive:by Joanna - General/Relocating
from Joanna, contact info for cottages by the sea - 11 years ago
Lindsay - They have an extensive website at www.caribbeancottages.com Here's the contact info... given the irregularities of STX communications you might need them all! Sometimes they answer during other than business hours, and sometimes you must leave a message. It is a small family run business. Re: outsiders - 11 years ago
My two cents, and you may further discount it since so far we are "only" yearly visitors. Since people are both so similar and so different all at once, I find getting along with people an important riddle wherever I go. I consider the global problems of conflict and feel that my truest contribution to peace is my own relating to others day by day. Everywhere I go, there are both foby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: what about MT. Victory? - 11 years ago
You apparently have contact info for Sand Castles. Cottages by the Sea is right beside them and a bit less expensive, less polished, less amenities than Sand Castles. We like the people who manage Cottages by the Sea - very accommodating and nice. Probably Paul and Sherree would be the people to speak to. Find contact info by googling "Cottages by the Sea". Re: need info about condos in Condo Row - for islanders - 11 years ago
Better to get advice from folks who llive fulltime on the island. We are snowbirds for many years who looked for four years before buying a property a few months ago. However I can say a few things since we considered buying at Carlton. It seemed the most affordable condo during a time when condo prices were apparently rapidly increasing and becoming in shorter supply. We found a pair of 1Bby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: STX - WiFi Hotspots? - 11 years ago
I am also interested in public WiFi areas, especially in or near Frederiksted, that I can use until we establish our own internet connection. I was planning on checking with the Frederiksted public library sometime soon. Thanks for any advice... Joannaby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Favorite STX Restaurants - 11 years ago
To combine dinner with sunset setting and live jazz, on a deck at the beach, check the schedule at Beachside Cafe (upscale but not too expensive)... maybe Wed or Thurs nights. This is where the West End webcam is (still?) located. Also, Under the Blue Moon in Frederiksted, with harbor views, more frequent live music and seems more social mixing.by Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Favorite STX Restaurants - 11 years ago
For a "very" local vegetarian meal (only one large table at the rear of a small local health food store), you can try Sica's restaurant in Frederiksted. I had the tastiest tofu dish ever, served by a very nice family from Dominica, with grandchildren who came out to say hello to us.by Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Gardening Bougainvillea - 11 years ago
Any opinions or advice from the local STX gardeners on this? Pros or cons? We are thinking of starting a bougainvillea hedge around our newly acquired hillside property near Cottages by the Sea, West End, almost a half acre on "stony ground" with lots of mature island plantings. Since we will be renting to long-term tenants for some years before living there, we need low maintenanceby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Malaria protection and travel doctor/specialists - 11 years ago
A few years ago, I traveled in Chile, Peru and Dominican Republic. Each trip I consulted a travel doctor to take whatever advance shots were recommended or required... to the extent available and reasonably priced. I am almost certain I took something for malaria for the Dominican Republic. From what I learned, travel shots, pills, etc. protect in different ways, to varying degrees and for diby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Practicalities - checked bags on plane - 11 years ago
Here's a cautionary tale about bringing furnishings by plane. In mid-August I flew to STX and tried to bring some folding chairs, household linens, kitchen supplies, tools and other furnishings inside 4 checked bags. I flew with American Airlines/American Eagle and very carefully followed their website baggage regulations. I confirmed the baggage regulations with an airline representative ahby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: moving to winter in St Croix!??? - 11 years ago
I add to the recommendation list the Beachside Cafe, just south of Frederiksted in the SandCastles on the Beach setting, which sometimes has live jazz or other music. You can combine an upscale outdoor patio meal beside the ocean, with a snorkling/swimming visit, or watching for the Green Flash during spectacular sunsets. Under the Blue Moon in Frederiksted is another dinner/ live music/ sunseby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: a positive word for the West End - 11 years ago
I am sorry about the bad experiences with crime and with the disappointing performance by the police. Having your personal space and possessions violated is a rude shock. I am glad you had other good experiences that compensated. There was so much rage and broad generalizations in the telling of the story, I just want to balance with my positive experience of the West End (which was, in my perby Joanna - General/Relocating
Re: Basic Used Furniture & on-line phonebook glitch - 11 years ago
Thanks for the continuing suggestions! They will make our short time so much more productive. You might be amused by a glitch in Innovatives on-line phonebook. The look-up method takes unusually many steps (fine, I can deal with that), but at the end a bright red bar covered (instead of highlighting) the store, address and phone number I was looking for. No problem, I have other clues to finby Joanna - USVI Classifieds
Thanks for the suggestions! Someone recommended a used furniture store called "Uniquities" at Peter's Rest. I googled around and cannot find a phone number to do advance scouting by phone. Maybe I am spelling it wrong? When I come Aug 10th for my four day "fix-up" trip, I would like to obtain a USVI phone book to take back to Philadelphia with me. Basic Used Furniture needed Aug 10th in STX - 11 years ago
Dear folks-already-on-STX - Now that TS Chris is less interesting (whew).... Could you help with suggestions for buying basic used furniture, or reasonably priced new furniture? Any favorite stores? I hear CostULess & K-Mart are decent sources. Anyone moving or upgrading? I plan to come Aug 10th for just a few days to acquire some additional basic furniture for our two 2-3 Bby Joanna - USVI Classifieds

"life is hard" elsewhere - 11 years ago
Dear long term posters to this forum - First I want to thank you for all the welcoming vibes and incredible wealth of information you all give continually. We bought a house recently on the West End of STX, and although renting it for now, have long term plans to live there ourselves. You all are a treasure we never could have imagined, and hope to meet you someday. My question is this. Eveby Joanna - General/Relocating
