QuoteScubadoo American changed their rules last year, First/Business Class only gets up to two included checked bags and they don't charge for overweight 50-70lbs. USPS is the best deal for a small number of boxes up to 70lbs. Paradise had a special rate for certain size/weight below a particular threshold. QuoteJim Dandy Keep in mind you may have to pay duties on the value of the items shipped by ocean freight. While you are also supposed to voluntarily report and pay the same duties on a shipment by Priority Mail I'm not sure many people do. Oh right - hadn't thought of that. USPS for the win!by Mya79 - General/Relocating
QuoteNYC to STT In the NYC area I would suggest going to the Tropical Shipping location in Kearny, NJ. It's easy to get to and a simple process. They give you a pallet, you stack your boxes on it, and they wrap it up tightly in plastic wrap. You pay by volume. We shipped two pallets stacked to the maximum allowable height, (which was around six or seven feet) and it cost us about $1000. You'llby Mya79 - General/Relocating
QuoteJuanita We've gone back and forth a few times, and each time have flown first class...reason being...you get to check 3 large bags at no charge, plus the usual carry on and personal item. There were two of us, so that's a total of 8 bags (actually 7 for us because my carry on is a cat). More than enough for our needs. Quoteernieandmaryjo In 2013 we shipped about 20 boxes, a full 4x4x4 pallet, with International Logistics, cost $440.00 from Miami. Thanks you -- really appreciate the actual numbers!by Mya79 - General/Relocating
Thank you, everyone!by Mya79 - General/Relocating
Thanks. I did that. It was not cheap. Seemed like ocean freight for a load of boxes might be cheaper?by Mya79 - General/Relocating
Actual cost to ship boxes of household goods to STX - 1 year ago
Good day, STX! I've searched the forum and come up empty... Wondering if people who have moved in the last year could give me an actual cost (or close estimate) to ship a standard moving box, and on which carrier. I wouldn't be bringing a ton of stuff but it's more than I can check on the plane or fit in the largest of those flat-rate USPS boxes. I assume I'll have maybe 8-10 boxes at most.by Mya79 - General/Relocating
Best dining deals in STX! - 2 years ago
I'm relatively new to the island but I've already heard about (and sampled) taco nights at a few spots -- Tuesdays at Maria's in Gallows Bay, Wednesdays at Miriam's, and Thursdays at Luncheria (2 for $3!). And of course there's $5 Gyro Night on Saturday at Pickled Greek. I love to save a little when I go out for a meal -- anyone know of other deals? Doesn't have to be tacos...by Mya79 - Community
