29 days... What am I forgetting?

My husband and I will be moving to STT on September 20th. What am I forgetting?? He already has a job. We were in town earlier this month for a PMV and signed a lease on a great apartment. I am starting to put my feelers out for a job for myself. I will decide between shipping companies within the next couple days. We are selling most of our furniture. My kitty goes to the vet on Monday for rabies shots (do I need a rabies certificate or a health certificate or both? that has to be issued within 10 days of leaving, right?). Oh yeah, and a copy of Don't Stop the Carnival is currently on its' way to my house. Any last minute advice or words of wisdom? What am I forgetting?? Thank you all so much for all the help you have provided me with on this message board. I would be lost without it.

How exciting! What type of job will you be looking for?

Regarding, Don't Stop the Carnival, I would recommend not reading it now. Wait until you have been here a year. You will "get it" so much more! Or, at least, plan to go back and re-read it.

Don't subject your poor kitty to a rabies shot, you don't need it for the VI. You will need a Certificate of Health from your Vet, issued within 10 days of departure. I don't think anybody ever looks at them, but you better have it just in case.
Has anyone ever had the airlines ask for a rabies certificate?

Thanks Juanita! I was most recently a Producer/Project Manager at an Ad Agency in NY. I have 8 years of experience (Print Production, Project Management, Operational Marketing) that could easily translate over to event planning or most advertising/marketing positions. I also bartend on the side. I figure this will come in handy in STT so I can make contacts and find my way from there...

Hi Sabrina,
I actually got that info from this website. And my future neighbor who travels with her kitty to and from STT says that it is very important to have the rabies vaccine info for the airlines.

"A health certificate from your veterinarian is necessary, it should state that the animal has not been exposed to any communicable diseases, is healthy and when rabies shots are applicable to your pet that the shots are up to date. This certificate should be prepared within 10 days of travel. Rabies shots are considered up to date if they have been administered within the last year, but no longer longer than one year. Have these documents readily available when you are traveling."

Social security card. 2 years tax forms. copies of any certifications or licences, your pillow and bring that great attitude along.

Don't Stop the Carnival is sort of like my bible.I reread it about once a year and still LOL. Wolk purely captured the essence of the culture.

Oh yeah and when you get here save every piece of paper the government gives you forever.

Welcome to the VI.

Lauren: Unless you really don't like it, don't sell your furniture! Instead, put it in storage. If you decide to move back, you'll have stuff. And if you decide to stay, you can ship it down later..

We really like our furniture actually, but we decided that the cost to store it is not worth what we payed for it. And if we do ever come back, we probably wouldn't come back to NY. Also, the place we are renting is furnished, and it's all really nice stuff.
The cost to store & possibly ship just doesn't seem worth it. Plus the money we get for it can go towards shipping the car, TV, and the rest of our boxes!

We just flew to STX on Sunday and no one asked for the health certificates. All they wanted was payment! You do have to take your cat out of its carrier at security. We put a little leash on ours, just in case, but they let you carry the cat through the metal detector, and we didn't have any problems.

Good Luck!

Bring a ton of cash so you can afford the electric bill. You could also buy some solar panels in the states and bring them with you.

Lauren, sorry, too bad about the rabies vac. It does say "when rabies shots are applicable" so probably coming from the USA that does have rabies, it is necessary. At least if you stay in the islands you shouldn't have to do it again.

If you are at all picky about the skin care products or shampoos etc that you use, buy them now ( I'm talking about the kind of things that can't be bought at a Pharmacy). Things do tend to spoil more quickly in the heat though, so I am in the habit of keeping my products in the fridge.
Good luck!
